I want to tell daughter in law to stop posing on photos

I know I'm being unreasonable, I know it's harmless, I know it's none of my business.

But if I see another family holiday picture where its all best profile, drinky with pinky cocked over her straw sunglasses tilted look at my boobs again I'll scream.

Or I can vent here and you can all talk me down before I say something everyone will regret.

I mean just relax, play with the kids, have fun .

The fact I was rung on day one of the school holiday cause she couldn't deal with them might be colouring my attitude to all the time spent styling, posing and collating perfect pictures must be taking. But I'm old school and my kids weren't accessories.

I do feel better now, thank you for listening.

Only read the first page of replies here and shocked at what a nasty bunch are on this site. How very hateful to post this Op, about your own DIL too. Your post is full of spite.

MaggiesShadow · 02/08/2026 16:01

This is embarrassing.

Someone having a differing opinion doesn't automatically mean they do 'cringey poses'.

A little maturity goes a long way.

Agree, I'm in a job where I haven't had social media for about ten years and I rarely have photos taken of myself but I think this is so nasty as a post. Poor DIL must be clueless too to be calling the OP for help..little does she know her mil and children's grandmother has posted anonymously about her on a forum for other women to mock her. I'd rather be a poser like the DIL then a nasty bully. My MIL is very different to me but always calls me stunning and beautiful whenever she sees me. We have a lovely relationship because she doesn't think I'm a superficial loser just because I like to look nice. You should meet her Op, might fix your nastiness.

hot2trotter · 02/08/2026 17:25

At least she's not pouting in every photo (I hope?) because that gives me the absolute rage.

"The absolute rage?!"
Sounds like you need to take a deep breath and step away from social media and your phone for a bit.

TheAmberKoala · 04/08/2026 13:58

0Thatsplenty0 · 02/08/2026 13:46

There was no nastiness from that poster, why are you making shit up? Your posts are extremely defensive.

Um, yeah, they were extremely nasty? calling me stupid, eye roll emoji?
Making derogatory comments about 'binning kids off'
Are you a switched account cos you sound like it.

wouldnt suprise me if theres a bit of jealousy in these threads too.

ginasevern · 31/07/2026 15:42

@Suszieq "you sound (as do others) very jealous and archaic and you need a bigger world …or some hobbies to focus on."

The OP needs a bigger world when her DIL is Insta-obsessed! I mean, that's a bit rich. And at 65 years old I doubt very, very much that she's remotely jealous or has any desire to project some kind of "perfect", pouting image. As for archaic, there are loads of people who feel exactly the same as the OP. As you can tell from the vast majority of comments.

Sad little life. It’s insta..just pics. A dot a tiny thing on the gran scheme of things.

Dont be so grey and dreary and again get a bigger world

Suszieq · 04/08/2026 19:57

Fortnightly · 31/07/2026 11:22

I disagree. Maybe OP would just like to see one photo of DIL looking natural and normal for a change. Everything doesn’t have to be staged.

Respectfully who cares what op wants. It’s her pic she can do what she likes

The day I give a fuck about how other people pose on their own pages is the day I know that social media is no longer for me. Stop being so invested.
Mind your own business, OP and address the babysitting issue separately. It’s hot nothing to do with DIL getting her tits out on instagram. Leave her alone.

She's allowed to have her opinion on her Dil.
You're in the minority according to the poll.
Dil sounds shallow, vain and a bit of a w@nker

FruitFlyPie · 05/08/2026 12:09

woopdedoodle · 31/07/2026 10:30

She's 40, not my daughter, my step son, he's in the pictures making sandcastles, swimming in the sea with the kids, etc etc.

And yesI know don't be a doormat, but that's easier said than down when you love the kids.

DSS is in the photos with the kids because she takes them, probably like most dads he would never think to return the favour. She is probably spending a lot more time playing with the kids and looking after them than he ever has, as with the vast majority of mums, there is no photographic evidence of this. The only photo a mum will get on a holiday is a selfie.

If you hate seeing posed photos then unfollow her.

mumumental · 05/08/2026 12:44

I have dils and make it a policy never to offer them any negative opinions. They don’t need your input and it will make you unpopular. There may be a lot of knock on effects. Don’t go there.

Being in the minority is never my concern… and in this case is very much welcomed

TheAmberKoala · 06/08/2026 12:48

Marieb19 · 02/08/2026 17:22

The ops second post said she was 40.

I was referring to the comment that her looks are the only thing she values.
The previous commenter said that, they cant possibly know that as they dont know the woman in question.

TheAmberKoala · 06/08/2026 12:49

MaggiesShadow · 02/08/2026 15:55

It's not my vibe but your judgmental attitude isn't my vibe either.

"My kids weren't accessories".

I hate that smug 'I'm a better mother than this woman' or 'I'm so much loftier than people who use social media' nonsense as much as you hate women posting selfies.

Horses for courses and all that.

and said over social media, too!

In this age of self obsession and narcissism l think people need to be called out. I'm sick of seeing people pouting and posing for photos all the time. It is so insular. I blame the Khardashians!

you want to "call out" people because you don't like the way they take photos/ selfies? Are you quite well 😂

What's next? "calling them out" because you don't approve of the way they dress?

and how do you think YOU look by calling them like that simply because you don't approve of someone taking a selfie

Why do you need to get so involved

I'm not sure....
I don't mind selfies at all, but it's when people go overboard and pout in that 'look at me, aren't I gorgeous?' way that winds me up. I'm older now, but was very attractive when younger (I was always getting compliments) but I just wouldn't pout and pose. I don't remember anyone that did behave like that. We didn't have cameras phones (or even phones back in the 90s!) ha. Plus I wasn't brought up to show off, but to me more humble.
I wouldn't of course say anything to anyone in real life....but it really does wind me up.

Yes, people would tell me I'm attractive....but I never pouted and posed like I was a bloody model....even now if someone gives me a compliment I get shy and awkward and wish they'd never said anything...I don't like to be the centre of attention.....so yes, it's possible to be both!!

Since the point went over your head, your post is very much 'showing off' despite you saying you were brought up so much better than those awful women who (OMG) pout!

MaggiesShadow · Today 16:59

It's so disheartening to see so many women spew such vitriol toward other women.

Internalised misogyny is alive and well on Mumsnet, it seems.

Grapewrath · Today 17:02

Wild how anti women mumsnet can be
