AIBU to worry about large numbers of undocumented men arriving in Spain?

1000 replies

MaturingCheeseball · 30/07/2026 17:34

Thousands of young men from Morocco and beyond swimming to Spain. Spain obviously has encouraged the problem with their amnesty for existing migrants, but thousands more arriving with no means of support and undocumented is going to cause huge problems. Large numbers will no doubt be ultimately trying to reach the UK.

It’s harsh, but we cannot accept infinite numbers of men.

I do stand by this! It’s not just the “green” couple; I didn’t say all left-wing people, but there is most definitely a skew. And actually my comment was in response to the poster suggesting we spent less on our pets so there’s one example for you.

Absolute rubbish. I volunteer at a Dogs’ Home. I’m as lefty as they come. So are all the volunteers I’ve spoken to and so are the staff judging by their social media. And the same is true of everyone else I know who helps animals. I’m not saying right wingers hate animals, but it’s absolute weapons grade bollocks to say the left wing does!

@LakieLady That's good. That should keep more innocent girls safe.

I think there are some people who wouldn't object to razor wire on our beaches if it kept asylum seekers out.

Not long ago, I tried explaining to some of my anti-immigration ILs how the Brexit they voted for made it harder for the UK to send migrants back and thus encouraged asylum seekers to come here.

They flatly refused to accept this, until I found stats online that showed the numbers arriving prior to Jan 2020 were negligible, and the subsequent year on year increases. They then started whingeing that "no-one told them" this would happen. I can distinctly remember the late Mr L and I pointing this out as a post-Brexit possibility in the run-up to the referendum and they didn't believe us.

Selling Brexit as a way of reducing immigration was possibly one of the biggest con tricks ever, and anyone who voted for it and is angry about irregular immigration has only themselves to blame.

You were looking at the wrong date. The UK was a full signatory to the Dublin Regulation throughout the 2020 transition period and paying a full EU budget contribution for that year.

What are we saying now? Which side hates dogs?

HRTQueen · 31/07/2026 13:24

Numbers reported have now increased to 60,000

Spain tried a new approach to migration from African countries, this at the time was called out by other European leaders who previously had less stringent policies

It has back fired, even their PM said they are under attack, these are strong words to appease his critics policy changes will be made again its one country making decisions that will suit their requirements and economy and how that has a bigger impact on other countries

OP are you under the impression MN is a Spanish site?

Net migration to the UK is down significantly btw - half what it was last year, and illegal migration also on a downward trend.

Half of a large number.
Do we really need any of them? If you say yes, what for?

cardibach · 31/07/2026 13:26

elvischicken22 · 31/07/2026 11:23

Do you seriously believe that?

It’s what the verified data says. It also says emigration is down, so that’s not the reason for lower net migration. You aren’t going to do that thing of believing all the numbers until they say something you don’t want to believe because it challenges your prejudices about a left wing government, are you?

Cucurella · 31/07/2026 13:27

CoffeeCantata · 31/07/2026 11:47

I really, seriously want to hear from pps who feel we should welcome people arriving in boats what their practical proposals are to house them. Not ‘I don’t mind paying more tax’ but really practical responses to where, how many and exactly how. If you can’t answer these questions you have no right to tell everyone else that we are panicking and being racist.

I don’t care what race, colour or creed an immigrant is - but I do want to know that someone has checked their credentials/criminal record etc, and found out why they didn’t request asylum in the first safe country they came to, and that they have the potential to be an asset to the UK.

Well said.

And we don’t just have people arriving in boats. We have no border checks on leaving the country, people just arrive on planes and don’t bother to leave.

https://elpais.com/espana/2026-07-31/ultima-hora-de-la-entrada-de-inmigrantes-a-ceuta-en-directo.html

Try reading Spanish news before you accuse Sanchéz of "doing nothing" and panicking.

Throughout this thread my point has been that you in the UK don't need to worry.

Anyone with basic knowledge of geography knows where Ceuta is, and understands that getting into Ceuta from Marruecos is a rather different story than getting onto the Iberian peninsula.

We have regulated immigration policy here which is humane. There is not a feeling amongst every migrant on earth that the ultimate goal is to reach the UK. I highlighted reasons why.

Spain will process and deal with the Ceuta matter correctly and humanely.

I have spoken to Spanish friends in Andalusia today. They all disagree with you and are shocked and worried at what is happening.

LuckyHazelFox · 31/07/2026 11:43

Per capita is racist.

It's not racist, it's just flawed.

The strongest predictors of crime are age, sex, and socio-economic status, i.e., young men from deprived backgrounds and living in poverty are statistically more likely to commit offences.

So when you compare a migrant population, which is usually made up of young men from poorer regions, against the entire native population, the figures are going to be skewed. Once you control for factors such as age, sex, and socio-economic status, much of the difference in offending rates is reduced and often becomes statistically insignificant.

These stats also often rely on arrest data rather than convictions or unique offenders. That's also an issue, because the same individual can be arrested multiple times, inflating the figures, especially within smaller populations.

But of course, that wouldn't generate outrage or keep people divided, so we just don't speak about it.

I mean the report that everyone quotes from the centre for migration control has literally been proven to be based on false data. The guy who wrote it deleted tabs, made basic arithmetic errors and changed numbers so that the data matched his chosen narrative, yet no one cares!

Are you talking about the regularizacion? Where is your half a million figure from?

This is a rough figure I encountered that combining all crossings in recent years. It might be less or more but you can count yourself, the number of people crossing has been increasing steadily over the last 10 years.

In any case, do you think 50k recent undocumented potentially criminally minded people arriving in Ceuta are ok?

IcedCoffee26 · 31/07/2026 13:40

Spain’s Sánchez blames trafficking gangs as estimated 60,000 migrants reach Ceuta with at least 34 dead – Europe live https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2026/jul/31/cueta-spain-morocco-italy-migration-schengen-europe-latest-news-updates?page=with%3Ablock-6a6c53488f08448bd1b0bb38

Sanchéz now in Ceuta.

As I said. Don't worry. Spain can deal with this just fine. Pedro Sanchéz is a very competent President.

@Cucurella the autonomous community of Andalucía is currently governed by a coalition of PP (right leaning mainstream party) and Vox (far right, similar to Reform type party). Their local news sources may reflect that.

Probably a planned takeover which the Moroccan government knows about.

I have seen film footage of Moroccan border guards opening gates in the border fence to let these people through.
The Spanish Left have brought this upon Spain by hailing migration as a "opportunity". (A bit like Angela Merkel did, and we all know how that turned out...) and now they have lost control of her borders.

So far there are 34 dead and the army has been called in to Ceuta.

Yes you’re right. If you lack critical thinking.

IcedCoffee26 · 31/07/2026 13:55

The Spanish army are there. The President is there. Repatriation will be expedited. 25.000 have already returned voluntarily to Marruecos. Current estimations are 150 per minute returning voluntarily on foot.

Saying that Spain "brought it on themselves" because we are humane to migrants and don't demonise them is ridiculous.

This is an event which will be handled correctly. It doesn't require hysteria or any such thing.
