AIBU to worry about large numbers of undocumented men arriving in Spain?

1000 replies

MaturingCheeseball · 30/07/2026 17:34

Thousands of young men from Morocco and beyond swimming to Spain. Spain obviously has encouraged the problem with their amnesty for existing migrants, but thousands more arriving with no means of support and undocumented is going to cause huge problems. Large numbers will no doubt be ultimately trying to reach the UK.

It’s harsh, but we cannot accept infinite numbers of men.

Per capita is racist.

Spain recently legalized around 1mln illegal migrants and it is refusing to do anything about stopping people crossing from Morocco, including ruling that returning them back is not allowed. Of course it's a choice for Spain to make but it has an impact on its neighbours and wider EU due to border free travel. Immigration should be regulated and organized properly - not spontaneous where you don't even know who you are letting in.

The regularizacion is a process which occurs every decade or so since the 80s. It is not new. This is the largest number of applications.

Noone has received a final resolution yet, what people have received is a temporary right to work while they await resolution which will be a few more months. In order to access the regularizacion, you had to already be hear and one of the requirements is to not have a criminal record on your home country, Spain, or any country you have resided in in the last five years.

Again. It is better to have a bit more information than what the tabloid newspaper tells you.

I really, seriously want to hear from pps who feel we should welcome people arriving in boats what their practical proposals are to house them. Not ‘I don’t mind paying more tax’ but really practical responses to where, how many and exactly how. If you can’t answer these questions you have no right to tell everyone else that we are panicking and being racist.

I don’t care what race, colour or creed an immigrant is - but I do want to know that someone has checked their credentials/criminal record etc, and found out why they didn’t request asylum in the first safe country they came to, and that they have the potential to be an asset to the UK.

Per capita data you just ignore it? Data that shows migrant men do it more per capita?

What data was this? The 'study' from the centre for migration control that falsified the data in their report or the one in, the telegraph (I think) that chose to ignore the notes in the source data that said it couldn't be used to estimate per captia figures?

LakieLady · 31/07/2026 11:55

We have not always been a country that is anti immigration, this has only happened in the last 20-25 years. Why do you think that is?

I would suggest its because A. We have less and less resources and B. Certain cultures dont align well with ours.

https://www.ipsos.com/en-uk/british-views-immigration

People used to use the "cultural difference" argument when they were complaining about people from the West Indies migrating to the UK in the 1950s, and those of South Asian origin fleeing Uganda in the 1970s.

There was widespread oppostion to both groups of immigrants at the time, usually pleading that "they" had a "different" culture. Racist graffiti was commonplace and racially motivated attacks not unusual.

It's just a form of the "othering" that fosters and fuels prejudice imo.

I think there are some people who wouldn't object to razor wire on our beaches if it kept asylum seekers out.

Not long ago, I tried explaining to some of my anti-immigration ILs how the Brexit they voted for made it harder for the UK to send migrants back and thus encouraged asylum seekers to come here.

They flatly refused to accept this, until I found stats online that showed the numbers arriving prior to Jan 2020 were negligible, and the subsequent year on year increases. They then started whingeing that "no-one told them" this would happen. I can distinctly remember the late Mr L and I pointing this out as a post-Brexit possibility in the run-up to the referendum and they didn't believe us.

Selling Brexit as a way of reducing immigration was possibly one of the biggest con tricks ever, and anyone who voted for it and is angry about irregular immigration has only themselves to blame.

I’m no Brexit supporter, but if Brexit is the main reason asylum seekers can’t be sent back, why are countries like Germany struggling so much?

Just a quick google:

Over the last ten years, Germany has successfully returned approximately 55,000 to 65,000 migrants to other European countries in accordance with the Dublin Regulation.

While Germany initiates tens of thousands of Dublin procedures annually, the number of actual completed transfers remains consistently low due to strict legal deadlines, logistical bottlenecks, and a lack of cooperation from recipient countries.

noddysyellowhat · 31/07/2026 11:59

@inamarina and a lack of cooperation from recipient countries.

There's your answer right there ^ they want to offload their dross onto others.

Burntatbothends · 31/07/2026 12:01

I read the other day that the UK only has enough water to supply an additional 440,000 houses. If true, this illustrated pretty well why we cannot keep accepting more people into this country. No idea how Labour will build the number of new houses they are proposing given this.

mrshoho · 31/07/2026 12:06

About 49,000 migrants enter Spanish territory of Ceuta, officials say - BBC News https://share.google/HMrwWP3bZxsw9joxZ

At least the BBC have revised their figures from yesterday's hundreds.

Out of the 49000 people officials estimate 7000 children. Just staggering how this happened over a 24 hour period. What was happening in Morocco yesterday that caused 7000 children to take this action? Morocco is holiday destination, a safe country!

I can't remember anything about West Indian immigration in the 50s but I do remember a bit about the Ugandan Asians in 1970.

These people were genuinely fleeing persecution and were skilled in the commercial sector. They were prepared to work hard and soon set themselves up in businesses in order to contribute to the UK.

A complete contrast to the dross we are getting now.

Yes, as a British Indian myself, I am wary of prejudice, and contributing to it myself.

The British Indian community has come a long way though, I believe, in becoming more liberal, educated and open-minded.

And on average, net contributors.

Also, Ugandan Indians did not have groups of young men. They came as families with wives and children.

But these numbers were considerably lower than what is happening today.

West Indies (late 1940s–1950s) 100,000–130,000 arrived and settled here.

Ugandan Asians (1972–73) 27,000–30,000 came,

Immigration from African countries between 2005–2025) Data shows Well over 1 million possibly as many as 1.5–2 million long-term arrivals.

Because rape and sexual violence towards women and children is just that, it shouldn't be viewed as worse if the perpetrator is darker in skin colour. This attitude is hugely damaging to the victims. Many of the "protect are women" mob have convictions themselves for VAW. But somehow they are so concerned about protecting women because the men aren't locals? There's something very underlying there, I think it's a subconscious fear that these newcomer men will be competitors.

If rape and sexual violence are more prevalent among certain communities, why would you want to ignore it? How does that help the victims?

Pretending that it’s just the ‘"protect are women" mob with convictions for VAW’ who are concerned about these issues is disingenuous.

Probably a planned takeover which the Moroccan government knows about.

I'm not sure about the planned takeover, but a politician from one of the Balkan states said in an interview that a Moroccan politician had told him that petty crooks in Morocco were left at large deliberately in the hope that they would go to Europe to escape jail, thus becoming Europe's problem.

Allowing people to bypass legal routes and then rewarding them for it will encourage others to do the same.

Every single study apparently showing increased per capita rates is wrong. Every single one of them. Across multiple nations. All wrong apparently

left-wing people by and large are not dog people. In the mornings I often pass this stringy couple out jogging. They always wear virtue-signalling t-shirts: “I’m running to end world hunger” (!) , “Run Green” and other (always green) t-shirts with similar slogans. The woman theatrically glares and shies away from Dog. He’s not in the least interested in them and doesn’t like eating green things anyway…

My T-shirt says 'Personal Cat Servant'. I am unashamedly right wing (apparently!). 😂

https://elpais.com/espana/2026-07-31/ultima-hora-de-la-entrada-de-inmigrantes-a-ceuta-en-directo.html

Try reading Spanish news before you accuse Sanchéz of "doing nothing" and panicking.

Throughout this thread my point has been that you in the UK don't need to worry.

Anyone with basic knowledge of geography knows where Ceuta is, and understands that getting into Ceuta from Marruecos is a rather different story than getting onto the Iberian peninsula.

We have regulated immigration policy here which is humane. There is not a feeling amongst every migrant on earth that the ultimate goal is to reach the UK. I highlighted reasons why.

Spain will process and deal with the Ceuta matter correctly and humanely.

It's 40% of applicants. Hardly a drop in the ocean.

Its less than half....hardly something to shout about.
And those are the ones we manage to get rid off... some come back sveral times despite being deported.
Usually they just fuck off under the radar and work illegally.
