AIBU to think that a stranger collecting a baby from a nursery is a massive safeguarding issue?

I saw on @jodyriley_ ‘s Instagram account last night that her 1 year old daughter was incorrectly collected by the grandfather of another child recently. The man seems to have had the child in his care for over 15 minutes before returning to the nursery.

From what I can gather, the nursery have been incredibly shady in what they’ve told the Mum and as more information has been slowly released, it seems that despite the nursery initially saying the child was asleep when collected, CCTV has proved that she was awake and alert. The nursery have also refused to pass on the names or contact details of the person who picked up the child.

I cannot believe how awfully the nursery have handled this. If I were the parent of a child in that nursery, there’s no way I’d be staying there considering how lax their safeguarding seems to be.

So did they mix two kids up?

The man came in to collect his granddaughter. Instead he’s picked up a different child and taken her. He returned 15 minutes later to say he had the wrong child.

Yes. Two members of staff and a man that wasn't her grandad didn't notice apparently!

How did it take the guy 15 minutes to realise it wasn’t his own granddaughter??

Perhaps they could have arranged a meeting with all involved parties to put any worries the mum has to bed?

My daughter briefly went to a very crap nursery with high staff turnover and I could imagine them doing this. They used to send pictures of the wrong child on the parent app.

If the grandfather didnt spend nuch time with rhe child, he could make a mistake.

Its the staff who should verify better. My mum was once stopped picking up DD from nursery as a newer staff member didbt recognise her and she couldnt remember the password. (The manager sorted it as she did recognise her and she was on the approved list).

This is absolutely horrifying from everyone involved. How can a grandparent not realise they have the wrong child? Why was the nursery ok to hand them over?

At our nursery you have to be named and photographed to pick a child up. You are given a little laminated ID card with the photo to show, and there is a password you have to give as well. I have seen staff implement this as well, it's not just for show - a worker said to someone, I'm sorry I'm not sure we've met before and I don't recognise you, can I see your nursery ID please?

If I was the mum of the mistaken child I would be withdrawing my children immediately. We don't know if anything untoward happened in those 15 minutes but it easily could have been an absolute disaster.

CCTV showed grandad walking round nursery for 10 minutes with child awake and crying before leaving. Child was allowed to be taken by 2 staff members. Grandad realised 15 minutes after leaving that it was the wrong child.
Beggars belief. Something doesn’t add up but police aren’t doing anything. Nursery should be shut down. I wouldn’t leave my kids there after that.

Sorry what would the police be doing? What is the crime?

Maybe the baby had same pram/baby seat.
Maybe baby had a hat on.
Grandfather brought the baby back as soon as he realised, so hes clearly not a ritual child slaughterer.

The crime is that a nursery allowed a 1 year old child to be released to a completely unrelated male. It’s a massive safeguarding failure at the absolute best!

It could be a complete honest mistake, or it could be the doing of an opportunistic pedophile. We don’t know until it’s looked into further. And the police have refused to look into it.

I’d maybe believe this; BUT
the nursery lied and told the mum that baby was asleep when the man took her. Refused to give the mum access to the CCTV and were acting very shady over it.
Mum has now seen the footage-the child is awake and alert, grandad interacts with her several times, puts a dummy in her mouth, looks directly at her. This isn’t a young baby it’s a toddler. Unless he’s never met her I can’t believe that he didn’t realise.

The nursery have a legal responsibility to the children’s in their care, giving a child to a complete stranger and allowing them to take them off site is a huge breach of health and safety. An investigation needs to be carried to determine whether this is a safe facility for children.

It could lead to all sorts of accusations and harassment.

I dunno.... There was a kid that looked ridiculously similar to my daughter and I mixed them up I photos.

A d if grandad hadn't seen what sprog was dressed in that morning he might not instantly realise it was wrong child, especially as he wouldn't expect to be given wrong kid!

Yeah it sounds like that's being implied. And why should the nursery give out someone's contact details to another client? That's a data breach. It's the nursery that needs to deal with it, not handing out the guy's number to randoms so they can accuse him of all sorts!

We have no idea what the grandad did with this child in those 15 minutes. We also don’t know whether he returned as he realised he had the wrong child, or whether the nursery contacted him as they realised. The nursery have refused to answer this.
