AIBU to think that a stranger collecting a baby from a nursery is a massive safeguarding issue?

I saw on @jodyriley_ ‘s Instagram account last night that her 1 year old daughter was incorrectly collected by the grandfather of another child recently. The man seems to have had the child in his care for over 15 minutes before returning to the nursery.

From what I can gather, the nursery have been incredibly shady in what they’ve told the Mum and as more information has been slowly released, it seems that despite the nursery initially saying the child was asleep when collected, CCTV has proved that she was awake and alert. The nursery have also refused to pass on the names or contact details of the person who picked up the child.

I cannot believe how awfully the nursery have handled this. If I were the parent of a child in that nursery, there’s no way I’d be staying there considering how lax their safeguarding seems to be.

Perhaps they could have arranged a meeting with all involved parties to put any worries the mum has to bed?

Absolutely not. Totally inappropriate way to handle it, and also they cannot dish out personal information to parents. Or hand off the wrong kids to the wrong adults.

Report to the council safeguarding team and OFSTED. Not expect the parents to talk to each other.

We have no idea what the grandad did with this child in those 15 minutes. We also don’t know whether he returned as he realised he had the wrong child, or whether the nursery contacted him as they realised. The nursery have refused to answer this.

Well, it's nothing to do with you tbh, so I'm not sure what you (specifically you) should know beyond what that person has chosen to share in Instagram?

Peterrabbity · 29/07/2026 09:46

Oscillating · 29/07/2026 09:43

Nonsense.

It could lead to all sorts of accusations and harassment.

Personally, if it were me or a family member of mine that had done this, I’d be absolutely willing, or would be encouraging my family member to make contact with the mum to explain what happened and put her mind at rest.

He did nothing to the child.

The person who will sexually abuse your child is going to be a relation or close friend. Worry about your husband, your father, your brother, the greatest guy you know who's great with the kids.

Not a man who was given the wrong child and returned them within 15 minutes.

Well you could say that about any news discussed on here?!?!

You cannot say that with 100% certainty. Don’t be ridiculous.

Which is fine.

But would you believe the man who insisted nothing happened?

Would friends/family believe? Or would they assume the worst and then go and "sort the nonce out" based on fuck all? We all know internet vigilantes are already attacking and harassing innocent people.

Of course not.

But the child's own father is more of a risk to your child than a man who was accidentally given the wrong child from a childcare setting.

Just like you are more likely to kill your child driving them to the nursery than this man sexually assaulting the child.

I don’t know… but I know that I’d hope that he’d talk to me to just confirm how the mix up happened.

I’d be much more likely to believe nothing untoward happened if they spoke to me rather than hiding away.

The crime is that a nursery allowed a 1 year old child to be released to a completely unrelated male. It’s a massive safeguarding failure at the absolute best!

It could be a complete honest mistake, or it could be the doing of an opportunistic pedophile. We don’t know until it’s looked into further. And the police have refused to look into it.

You seem desperate to cast aspersions on the gentleman in question.

An 'opportunistic paedophile' who brought the child back after 15 minutes?

Hysterical.

Well you are more likely to be raped by your own husband than a stranger in the park. But are you more fearful when laying next to your husband in bed, or walking through the park in the dark? Would you be telling yourself that ‘it’s ok as your husband is more likely to rape you’ if a man was following you through said park?

Your logic makes no sense.

Not at all. I just think it’s appalling that the nursery and police are not looking into this any further.

The nursery certainly. Police? No crime has been committed.

Maybe he's worried the parent will come from your standpoint that he's a paedophile until he can prove he's not. The nursery have made a massive safeguarding fail and I would assume social services will be in to check on their procedures but this grandad needs to be left alone he brought the child back the minute he realised. He has as much reason to be angry with nursery for putting him in this position. He has no idea what the parent/ family of the child are like they could start accusing him of all sorts he needs to protect himself and his identity in this debacle

BirdLandedonmyHead · 29/07/2026 09:59

It should be looked into. By ofsted, Social services, the council etc. The people governing safeguarding in nurseries.

The Police are the wrong experts.

Rubbish. What you've written is beyond stupid. I don't know what world you live in but it isn't the real one!

He could have done anything to that child in that time, anything.

I sincerely, sincerely hope that it was as it's being presented, just a mistake, but the nursery are handling it incredibly badly by lying and being difficult about sharing CCTV etc. which can't be helping the parents at all.

The poor man! Op is clearly angling that he's a paedophile. This is on the nursery, not the Grandad.

A grandad who can’t recognise his own grandchild at best. Yeah I am judging the man

It's not the grandfather's fault he was handed the wrong child. It's absolutely not fair that he should have his identity disclosed, or be forced to meet the parents. If I was in his position, I certainly wouldn't participate unless compelled to do so by a judge.

Helpwithdivorce · 29/07/2026 10:05

He couldn’t recognise his own grandchild and took one that wasn’t his! He had no business collecting a child if he didn’t know what they looked like. And the nursery workers should be arrested for allowing him to take her

KnickerlessParsons · 29/07/2026 10:05

I can see how it could happen if both girls, say, had long blonde hair and were wearing the same/similar clothes. My DD and her best friend looked like twins - I was always asked if I had them both out with me together.
Not that that makes it ok though.

Fortunately no harm was done, but the nursery needs a process to stop it from ever happening again.

It’s odd that people are intent on claiming this to be true without any information though. Why are you insisting be brought the child back the minute he realised?

He has as much reason to be angry with nursery for putting him in this position.
Could he not have looked at the child he was taking during the 10 minutes he had her before removing her from the setting? He’s hardly absolved of responsibility here.
