To not let 14yo dye her hair blue!

Daughter has just turned 14, she's ordered herself a crazy colour bottle of sapphire blue hair dye and wants to dye her very long, dark brown hair blue.

We have a big family wedding on the 15th August, plus I doubt it'll all wash out before she returns to school.

Now having a major meltdown but I don't think I am being unreasonable to say no, do you? A

My DD has just found out thag even the dyes tnat say they work on dark hair...only created a tinge on hers.

Fieldday26 · 28/07/2026 18:45

It’s unlikely to make that much difference on dark brown hair (unless she plans to bleach it first, which would be a big no) but honestly, it’s the summer, I couldn’t get too worked up about a temporary hair dye.

Waheymum · 28/07/2026 18:45

Will that work on dark brown hair? She might need to bleach it...

LoafofSellotape · 28/07/2026 18:45

I'd let her do the ends then have a good trim before school starts. I wouldn't care about the wedding but schools seem to be pretty strict over hair.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 28/07/2026 18:46

Don’t be so controlling, she’s not a baby and it’s not your hair

ExtraOnions · 28/07/2026 18:46

It won’t make much difference, plus it’s her hair she can do what she wants. Leave her too it.

BillieWiper · 28/07/2026 18:47

It won't go blue unless she bleaches out all the colour first which can only safely be done in stages. Else the hair will be severely damaged.

So yeah tell her it won't work.

Hankunamatata · 28/07/2026 18:47

Bleach ends and let her dye them blue then chop before school starts

Aaloyisha · 28/07/2026 18:48

This is what the summer holiday is for! The wedding isnt an issue, and it will be back to normal well before school.

Carryitjoyfully · 28/07/2026 18:48

Unless she is going to bleach it first it will just make her hair look slightly muddy. DD3 did the same at this age and it was a big learning curve for her! Bright pink does work very nicely on DDs hair though and washes out in a couple of weeks.

thefloorislavayes · 28/07/2026 18:48

It's not really your business and perfectly acceptable for a 14 year old to dye her hair blue. That aside she needs a developer for dark brown hair to actually take to the blue.

Monr0e · 28/07/2026 18:49

Is it semi permanent or permanent?

I admit I let dd do the same with a semi permanent hair dye last summer when she was 15. Also long mid brown hair.

The year before she was cherry red. Both times it was semi permanent and pretty much gone before she went back to school.

She has now left school and due to start college in September and she's just had calico hair done professionally at the hairdressers. I think experimenting with hair colours and clothes is completely normal at this age. And it is likely to make much difference on her dark brown hair.

MrsMillyFluff · 28/07/2026 18:49

As someone with dark brown hair, I find it difficult to dye it bright colours and it needs bleached to get the desired effect. Personally I don't think it will make much difference to her hair colour. Let her do it, it's the holidays, if it is ott you could get a dark brown hair dye to cover it. I remember starting to dye my hair at around her age and my DD's did too.

OriginalUsername2 · 28/07/2026 18:49

It’s actually really hard to keep colours like that to stay in, plus like PPs said, it will barely show.

xOlive · 28/07/2026 18:49

Ah fuck it, let her do it.
In fact, help her do it.
It could be a nice bonding moment at the right age rather than the “I hate my Mum, she never lets me do anything…” turn point it could be at 14.
Piercings and tattoos will be next so pick which hill you want to die on.

itsmeitsyou · 28/07/2026 18:51

The colour won't take properly without bleaching first. She will have hints of blue (that will fade 💚) especially if colouring dark hair.
My DD14 has red tips at the minute, she is blonde so takes well without need for bleaching.

My son used to be a big Dan TDM fan when he was much younger and dyed his very brown hair blue you couldnt really tell
She would have to bleach it first.

As others have said - even the bright colours don't really show up that well on dark brown hair. I have purple on mine and it shows up well on the grey, gives it a nice tint on the brown, and I have to re-do it every week to keep it looking nice. My daughter experimented in the summer for a few years before having it professionally coloured when at college. It's the right age to be able to play with your look, and summer holidays are perfect for it.

If she's just going to use the hair dye (no bleach), I'd let her get on with it.

My DD (also long dark brown hsir) tried to dye ends of her hair blue at the same age. She ended up with a barely discernible dark greenish tinge. Nothing like the pictures on the bottle. It faded very quickly.

Would recommend she puts some moisturiser along her hairline and ear area before she starts, as her skin is likely to take the blue dye much better than her hair will!

WitchayWoman · 28/07/2026 18:55

Making "crazy" hair decisions is part of being a teenager. It might look like crap (if it even shows up on her hair colour, as others have pointed out) -- but even if it does, it's such a benign expression of autonomy, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Tumbler777 · 28/07/2026 18:56

If her hair is dark then bleach and pink will look great. Just tell her blue is very old now. Fwiw i know someone mid 50s who dyes her hair blue and thinks that comments on it are compliments, no one is being unkind, she thinks it’s amazing and people feel obliged to comment !

pinknotebooks · 28/07/2026 18:59

Half the teens round here dyed their hair the day school was out!
It's an easy harmless way to show your child you will support them in some things they want to try.

You could always dye just the ends as a compromise. Or dye segments that can be hidden in a hairstyle?

Trumpisacunt · 28/07/2026 19:00

Oh let her, might give the stuffy relatives something to talk about and brighten up the dull speeches ? Seriously though if you cant dye your hair blue at 14 then when can you but as others have said it probably will be a big disappointment as it wont show up !
Be thankful If this is the worst act of rebellion and being non conformity she can come up with Cake
