To not let 14yo dye her hair blue!

narcASD · 28/07/2026 18:43

Daughter has just turned 14, she's ordered herself a crazy colour bottle of sapphire blue hair dye and wants to dye her very long, dark brown hair blue.

We have a big family wedding on the 15th August, plus I doubt it'll all wash out before she returns to school.

Now having a major meltdown but I don't think I am being unreasonable to say no, do you? A

I’d let her do it

PashaMinaMio · 28/07/2026 19:05

My daughter did it at 14. Its a rite of passage.
Help her do it. Just shrug and get it done.
My daughter never did blue again. Lesson learnt!
It’s fun! Go with the flow.

Bleach ends and let her dye them blue then chop before school starts

Perfect Summer Holiday solution!
It’ll be fine for the wedding - if you’re worried about judgement, all that there will be is approval for the expression of personality.

DonaldWheresMaTweezers · 28/07/2026 19:10

There's a possibility it will go extremely dark brown or black on dark brown hair, I would definitely tell her to do a strand test first.

(Weirdly that's the second time I have posted that advice this evening),

littlepinkdragon · 28/07/2026 19:11

My 12 year old son bleached his hair this week. It looks awful but it will be gone by the time school starts back. He’s happy 😆

GinaandGin · 28/07/2026 19:13

A meltdown ?
Really OP?
ITS HAIR DYE
get a grip

AndImVictoriaMalcolm · 28/07/2026 19:16

The colour won’t show by the time school starts if she dyes it now. It probably won’t by the wedding either tbh. My white-blonde teenager has dyed her hair pink and purple before and none of the colours have lasted that long, even the shocking pink faded quicker than I thought it would. I would say not to do it in term time as schools usually are strict. My daughter’s school doesn’t let them sit any exam for breaking uniform rules and that includes hair dye.

Spidey66 · 28/07/2026 19:17

I’m with the others, let her do it, early summer holidays are the best time. It’s only hair colour, it would be different if it was tattoos or multiple piercings that are permanent.

Theresalittlebitofwitchinyou · 28/07/2026 19:20

Crazy color blue on dark brown will do nothing. It would need left on for about a week to do more than a slight tint. (Veteran blue, green, purple red pink dyers in this house). If you want to allow it use la Riche directions and leave on for 6-8 hours

theneighbourstolemyteacup · 28/07/2026 19:21

Bleaching her hair would not be great, but just blue dye at the very beginning of the school holiday? Let her

So what if she has blue hair at the wedding? She's 14, as long as she's dressed very smartly, she can look lovely.

If you can't go for crazy colours at that age, when can you? In a few years she'll have summer jobs and might be unable to have fun. Just let her.

Girlwithavibe · 28/07/2026 19:22

Usually these kind of dyes are semi or demi and just coat the hair on natural dark brown hair it may not really do much but might go a muddy green !
Most people usually bleach the hair first and then apply and actually blue is a bugger to get out it may well turn turquoise on fade then a pale green I am a hairdresser!
I'd let her do it I let my 15 year old dyes hers on her prom year school didn't mind it was like an electric blue she loved it and she soon went blond again when she got fed up with it I think it's just what girls do !! She has had peroxide blonde pink back to natural ginger and now natural again !!

squirrelchops2 · 28/07/2026 19:23

Yeah, unless she wants everyone to assume she's ND, don't do it.

mummysmagicmedicine · 28/07/2026 19:30

She’ll just do it behind your back otherwise so warn her that it probably won’t work and let her do it. Save saying no for things such as staying out really late etc. If doesn’t wash out by school then just dye her hair a natural colour, tell her this first and if she is buying the blue hair dye tell her she is expected to have enough to buy the natural hair dye if it goes wrong

narcASD · 28/07/2026 19:36

@GinaandGin a meltdown from my daughter not me

@squirrelchops2 she is ND! Not sure what that has got to do with it though.

@ToKittyornottoKitty controlling is not me at all! She's getting belly button pierced Friday, I just didn't want her to dye her hair blue )and it go wrong) before the wedding, it's a family one and she's part of the bridal party 😂

Let her do it. Help her. Join in. Lots of fun and years and years to conform

You didn’t want her to do it at all. And why can’t her hair be dyed for the wedding? There’s nothing wrong with a teen expressing themselves with their own hair.

RabbitRunRabbit · 28/07/2026 19:40

At that age I let my DD dip dye the ends. I bleached the bottom 4ish inches then dyed it red/blue/green. Come September I chopped the bottom off so she was good for school. As for the wedding, you can probably hide the dye job with certain hair styles.

Of course she can! She's 14 that's what they do.

PartoftheBand · 28/07/2026 19:41

I'd much rather have the hair dying which is temporary and, as pp have said, almost certainly won't be bright blue on dark brown hair, than a permanent belly button piercing at that age.

Literally every person with blue hair i know is ND...like a real stereotype. If she's OK with that, then no problem. If she's not comfortable with other people making that assumption she might not want to go blue.

Monr0e · 28/07/2026 19:49

DD had blue hair last summer

She wouldn't give a flying fig if anyone thought she was nd.

(We are also at a wedding on the 15th, will be looking out for any blue tinged ends in the bridal party 🙂)

Kokonimater · 28/07/2026 19:51

Of course you should let her!
and you should help her!
A nice bonding thing. Help her to bleach the ends and they’ll turn blue.
poor girl to have such a stuffy mum.

Well I took my 13yo (also ND) dd to the hairdressers to get her hair dyed blue. It looked great! I think you should let her and help her with this.

(I remember an incident with my older dd where her and her friend tried to dye their hair in our bathroom and it went wrong and there were lots of tears, so I prefer a hairdresser to do this these days).

Flamingojune · 28/07/2026 19:58

Why cant bridal party have blue hair. I'd be more concerned about piercing

LongStoryLong · 28/07/2026 20:02

xOlive · 28/07/2026 18:49

Ah fuck it, let her do it.
In fact, help her do it.
It could be a nice bonding moment at the right age rather than the “I hate my Mum, she never lets me do anything…” turn point it could be at 14.
Piercings and tattoos will be next so pick which hill you want to die on.

I agree with this. I took my similar-aged DD to my hairdresser last week to have her hair dyed a crazy colour for the summer. She’s so pleased with it, and I’m glad I supported her choice. I’ve said if it hasn’t gone by the start of school she’ll have to have it cut into a bob, which will look amazing so it’s a win-win. My advice: help her/take her/enjoy it with her. It’s been a nice thing for us.
