90s film recommendation for 16yr old

Tapoopoo · 28/07/2026 08:55

Over the last few weeks DD16 and I have watched a film or a series together a few times a night.

I'm not a big TV person (we wouldn't have one at all if it was up to me) but this has been lovely. She normally just hisses at me or asks for money so I'm enjoying this before normal behaviour resumes. 🤣

What films/series would you recommend?
She is quite eclectic and I dont care but some 90s films would be good to relive my youth.

She likes:
Fallout series
Schitts Creek
Heartbreakers
Pitch Perfect
Fallout Guy
Sliding Doors (this was left field but she really loved it!)

She didn't like
Warm Bodies
Shakespeare In Love
Top Gun
Dirty Dancing

I'm trying to get her to watch The Last of Us and Stranger Things but she's refusing on principle because we wouldn't let her watch them when they first came out.

Near Dark came out the same year as the Lost Boys and it is a much better vampire film. People only liked Lost Boys because of the shirtless saxophone man at the beginning.

Speed!!!

St Elmo’s Fire
(at the very least for the theme tune ! )
10 things I hate about you .

CypressMoon · 28/07/2026 21:38

Groundhog Day
Clueless

Not 90s but Legally Blonde and About Time are both brilliant (if she liked Sliding Doors, About Time might really appeal)

Londonrach1 · 28/07/2026 21:39

Music with lyrics
Mannequin

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - series
Angel - series
Charmed - series
Bring it on!
Legally Blonde
Legally Blonde 2
The Holiday (I think this might just be early 2000s)
Lethal Weapon 4 (it's the best one!)
Die Hard 3 (also the best one!)

It’s not 90’s but there’s a lot of time travel in The Umbrella Academy on Netflix? Give that a go!

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 28/07/2026 21:52

Another voice chiming in for Buffy, or if you fancy something a bit shorter and don't mind a bit of sci fi, Firefly.

Film wise, I don't think anyone's suggested either The Wedding Singer or The fifth element yet.

BambinaCucina · 28/07/2026 21:53

Definitely clueless!

10 things I hate about you, too.

Probably not romeo and juliet - it was massive at the time, but I think that's more cos of Leonardo than the fact ita Shakespeare 🤣

I also love the breakfast club, but if she didn't like dirty dancing or top gear, it may be a bit old for her.

Back to the future is quite amusing.

Yoyooo · 28/07/2026 21:57

Cruel intentions?

WashingQueen16 · 28/07/2026 21:59

Ohhh I love this thred.

We have been doing something simular for my DS15. Things we think he would enjoy.
He's terrible though and won't watch a series (but I think he would enjoy Big bang theory) and is picky about movies lol.
He loves Jurassic park and randomly Matilda & Nativity (loves musicals) but won't watch High School Musical the film - hes hard work lol.
Hes seen Grease the show but won't watch the movie.
I thought he would enjoy little shop of horrors but he won't watch it 🤦‍♀️

DS13 is better at TV and movies. We watched The Good Doctor together and was going to start on Young Sheldon but he watched it himself & hes gone through the Marvel movies with his dad.

Some great calls on here. My suggestions would be:
Ferris Buellers days off
Brewsters Millions
Ever After
10 thing's i hate about you
Muriels Wedding
The Birdcage
Coyote Ugly
Practical Magic
Miss Congeniality

Some of my go to action movies are Con Air, Bad Boys & Day After Tomorrow.

Frasier if she is the intellectual type, minder if she likes UK based comedy/drama or Twin Peaks/quantum leap if she likes something a bit sci-fi.
