To be annoyed at the assumption that I am a Mrs?

Cheeseandolivesplease · 20/07/2026 21:57

So I completed a update form at the dentist for myself and my daughter; the ones they routinely hand out. It didn't ask for my title, but I ticked the "married" box.
Next thing I know, my name pings up on the screen as Mrs .
Just no!!
At the end of my appointment I went to ask for it to be corrected, but AIBU to be annoyed at the assumption?
A bit like the thread today referring to the new prime minister's wife as Mrs Burnham. She is Ms van Heel.

I’ve highlighted a few. You are pretty offensive. That’s your right, but not deniable, unfortunately.
Not everyone thinks the way you do.
If you’re a feminist, you may want to give up your mean girl persona - it’s unpleasant and contradictory.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 27/07/2026 17:07

@RomaRoamer What questions? Have you found those examples yet?

Why you think it’s acceptable to wear rings, a symbol of ownership, whilst telling other women they’re propping up the patriarchy by using “Mrs”?

I asked what you did to challenge the patriarchy that was significant, the answer was not a lot.

I guess, the biggest question I have is how you can be so judgmental of other women whilst claiming to be a feminist. I think your behaviour upholds the patriarchy more so than any title a woman chooses to call herself ever could.

You appear to have a very conformist life even though you are adamant you don’t.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 27/07/2026 17:16

@Swiftie1878 You're conflating assertive with "offensive." None of your examples are showing anything offensive!

Oh, but they are!
And you can’t see it!?

Please don’t fight the patriarchy on my behalf - you’re setting the cause back.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 27/07/2026 17:13

@Swiftie1878 Fact. Research is your friend.

Offensive.

Just ask to correct it. Not worth frothing about

Swiftie1878 · 27/07/2026 17:15

Opinion. Yours.

There we are, that patronising, rude tone we’ve seen throughout the thread.

Suggesting anyone who disagrees is uneducated.

I’m actually laughing at someone denying being offensive then immediately being offensive to support how they aren’t offensive. 😂

Again, you are offensive. Just because you don’t think you are doesn’t make it so.

I have said, it’s your right to be offensive if you wish, but you can’t deny it when people around you are being offended!

Being a strong and challenging woman can be an amazingly good thing. But when that woman refuses to appreciate other viewpoints, she just becomes a PITA. Same with a strong and challenging man.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 27/07/2026 17:28

Factually incorrect. I actually asked that of you @RomaRoamer 😆
"I asked what you did to challenge the patriarchy that was significant, the answer was not a lot."
You said "not a lot" - not me. I gave examples.

@Swiftie1878 Why not ask for deletion then? Is it because nothing I have said is offensive, despite you taking offence at it?

I admitted I don’t do a lot.

But I’m not the one writing threads about how I challenge the patriarchy whilst dragging other women down, which is actually upholding the patriarchy, all while doing “not a lot” yourself.

You gave examples and they proved to be not a lot.

Why do you wear rings? Surely the ownership symbolism is beneath you.

You have assumed I’m offended. I’m not. I’m just observing you offending others.
I don’t believe anyone has a right to not be offended. I do believe an offensive person can’t deny it though. Own it.

Why are you goading? Not everyone feels the need to whinge when they have been offended. You should know that, being a self proclaimed strong, assertive woman.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 27/07/2026 17:37

@Swiftie1878 I couldn't care less if you are offended by my viewpoint and disagreeing vehemently with yours.
If people are offended at me calling myself Ms MyName then they are part of the problem.

@RomaRoamer Why don't you ask MN for their unbiased opinion? Nothing ventured...

OP posts:
Cheeseandolivesplease · 27/07/2026 17:41

@RomaRoamer Educating the next generation of women (and men) about the patriarchy is not "nothing". Certainly more than you are doing (by your own admittance). And yes - they do need educating. Just look at the assumptions on here from so many women e.g. Mrs is the default, Ms means divorced etc. All wrong.

Nobody is offended by that. Call yourself Christopher Biggins for all anyone cares.

What is offensive is suggesting anyone who disagrees with you is uneducated or propping up that patriarchy, especially when you’ve done a fantastic job of it yourself.

??? None of the examples I gave (there are more, btw) were of people being offended at you choosing to use Ms as your title.
You are causing offence by demeaning anyone who doesn’t see it in the same way you do, either its significance or its importance. And demeaning women who have made different choices to you in that regard, even quoting research to suggest you are more intelligent than anyone who uses Mrs.

You asked for examples of where you’ve been offensive, which I supplied. But you can’t see the offence and are now having a go at me!
Feminist my a*e.

I’m not interested in being a tattle tale.

You’ve been told by multiple women you are offensive. Take it or leave it. Common denominators often don’t realise they are the common denominator.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 27/07/2026 17:44

@RomaRoamer Women retaining the title of Ms rather than changing to Mrs are stasitically likely to be more educated. I didn't do the research btw but you can find it easily.
If you can't see how it props up the patriarchy then perhaps research that as well?

OP posts:
Cheeseandolivesplease · 27/07/2026 17:45

@RomaRoamer Funny that. Perhaps because nothing I have said is offensive! MN will, of course, be happy to be the unbiased decider though. I'm more than happy for you to ask them.

Is that on the curriculum? I’d be having words with your superior if my child came home having been lectured about topics you have no right discussing with your pupils!

Having a higher level of education doesn’t equate to intelligence. You should know that if you work in education.

Can’t you see how being so judgmental of other women is also propping up the patriarchy? If you can’t, you should do some search too.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 27/07/2026 17:52

@RomaRoamer Good luck with that! I am stating FACT by telling young people that the default title upon marriage is not Mrs!
