That what I want to be calls when I’m a grandparent
don’t wanna be called nanny which then turns into nan !
don’t wanna be called grandma sounds oddly formal and a bit stiff

gangan too posh

blokes get all the good names like grandad and pops etc

I can see your logic in that men get to be called granddad but grandmum just doesn’t sound right, it sounds weird and awkward. How about grandma? That’s what I will probably choose for myself as I don’t really like granny and my children had nannas so I don’t want to be nanna.

You get called whatever your name your son or daughter want their child to call you. You don’t get a say. Just go with that they want and be grateful for grandchildren

Not at all! We asked both sets of parents what they wanted to be called and went along with their wishes.

I’ve never met a ‘Gran’, and think it an ugly, harsh monosyllable. But that’s what MIL wanted to be called. So that’s what we and the dc call her. She loves them and they love her.

The only title either of us would have expressed any negative opinion on would be words meaning Mother or Father. A grandparent wanting to be called such a title would speak volumes about the relationship.

TheyGrewUp · 19/07/2026 10:20

I'm G, but the baby can't speak yet so who knows. DIL's mum is Grandma. I expressed a wish not to be: grandma, nanna, etc, and DS and DIL were happy. Our children call their grandma's Grandma Joan and Grandma Jenny. Now known as Great Joan and Great Jenny !

If I wrote or said "wanna" I imagine I'd be banned from seeing the baby.

pigsDOfly · 19/07/2026 10:20

Gangan too posh?

It's very much a working class usage in the small market town I live in, and something I'd never heard until I moved here.

Judellie · 19/07/2026 10:21

My mum's mum was always Gran to us, is that better?

It is weird tho how grand mum sounds so odd but grandad and grandmother are fine ?

Until this thread it had never dawned on me that granddads get to have dad in their name and mums don’t. I agree though, it just doesn’t sound right. I think children might get teased if their friends hear it as no one says it.

AllieJayP · 19/07/2026 10:23

Does it matter what they call you ??………Within reason !!

They often use different names for the two grandmothers - if, they are lucky enough to have two.

A Nanny is someone who minds kids.

My grandmothers were called granny (name)
My MIL insisted on Nanny (name) and over a decade in, I still find it 🫣

Same here, granny plus name

No, how odd! My mum said she wanted to be nanna so nanna she was. What kind of a twat would I have been if I’d said no, you’re granny!

Takingtigermountainbystrategy · 19/07/2026 10:28

I wanted to be called by my name but that didn't happen. I got saddled with Nanny which I really dislike but I'm used to it now and it's irritating but not a huge deal

MyIcyHeart · 19/07/2026 00:26

How the hell does 'Gangan' sound too posh?! It sounds ridiculous.
What about Granny?

Is it what Amanda’s mum is called in Amanda land? That might be why it seems posh?

Any1ForTennis · 19/07/2026 10:36

I would have been so embarrassed as a child I probably would have opted out of ever speaking to my Grand Mum especially in front of my friends! My paternal Grand Mother wasn't from the same country as the rest of my Grandparents and I still to this day never refer to her as anything except 'paternal Grand Mother' 😆 as my school friends used to take the piss out of her nominated Granny type name! No, I'm not telling, even 30 years after she died I still cringe.

Pick one of the standard titles or you'll never get a "Happy Birthday Granny" card!

Cpuntbinface · 19/07/2026 10:39

gangan sounds posh because of Amanda land. Nothing wrong with being called grand mum but I do think you should just embrace “nan” and accept youre not young anymore

Leavesandthings · 19/07/2026 10:42

I'm afraid you might not get a choice.
My mum said similar things before her first grandchild was born. She distinctly didn't want to be Granny or Grandma.

Her name developed on its own.....
She is Granny(first name) always said as one quick word

She says she doesn't mind it because it's what came naturally to the kids. I'm not sure I believe her!

CloudyVenus · 19/07/2026 10:42

I call mine nanna as she said grandma makes her feel old (only asked her once, soon learned to not ask again!).

My other one was called nanny which I think is quite common.

I’m from an immigrant family. We called our grandparents by their language’s words for grandparents, and my dc call my parents by the same words. Not only have none of us ever been teased for this (been teased for plenty of other things!) but our childhood friends and our dc’s friends would also call our grandparents/my parents by these words. The children simply assumed they were the adults’ names.

Nothing wrong with different. What’s weird in one area is normal in another.

Oliwiaa · 19/07/2026 10:43

For some reason I would assume Grandmum is a great grandma, like maybe they ran out grandma names 😂

Exactly - I really don't like nanny unless it means paid childcare or a female goat. Granny all the way. I also think it's weird when people say it sounds old or "I couldn't possibly be called Granny!" and choose ridiclous names for themselves like Joo Joo or BeBe (fine if the grandchild finds their own name when learning to talk) but be proud to be a grandparent. And btw, being a grandmother kinda means we are old(er) so I say embrace it and love everything that goes with being a granny. I do!

The counterpart is Grandma I would say.

Spidey66 · 19/07/2026 10:45

Gangan was used on Amandaland by Felicity.

Ilovemyfam · 19/07/2026 10:46

DeeplyUnlikely · 19/07/2026 00:33

Ugh. What’s wrong with ‘granny’?

I’m a granny. I just thought it was a special title that no one else can have - whereas Nanny could be a paid employee.

Saying that my 10 month old has not worked out a name. The 18 month old calls me either “Dad” or “Bap”. We will see where that goes.

likeitshard · 19/07/2026 10:48

grandmama or great ma

chichi001 · 19/07/2026 10:51

My mum.and dad have always been Nanny and Grandad...although aa rhe kids have got older they have awarded calling my dad 'g-dad'. My own nan was 'great nanny' to them.

I imagine I'll be nan too - although they have suggested 'nain' as we live in wales...but it is up to my children and my grandkids what they call me!

My kids other grandparents, who they see so rarely that they barely know them are 'daddy's parents' and on the rare occasion they see them, they just dont tend to call them anything

It is what Prince William’s children called Queen Elizabeth (allegedly). I suppose you can’t get much posher than that. I don’t like it.

Hotandpointy · 19/07/2026 10:55

I think I’ll go with Granzilla, has a certain charm to it.
