I'm going to be Grandmama. It's a.complicated in family joke but due to that I know the kids will use it. Dh will be pops another in joke so it will become grandma ma and Pops

Imo we get to chose our grandparent.names and sometimes the grandchildren rename us.

Im 39 but I don't mind Grandma either. I don't care if it sounds 'old'.

I know a couple of Glam mas. My kids call their grandmothers Nana and granny. I hate gan gan, dosent sound posh just sounds weird. I also know a few Omas which is odd because they’re English.

I’m sorry! I will always think Granny=rocking porch, grey hair, knitting needles and thick glasses. None of my Nannies are Grannies for that exact reason, they were just too young for Granny to fit in my head. It kinda reminds me of the “Mrs Claus” idea in cartoons with a grey bun and a rocking chair. It’s so odd how we perceive things so differently! (I’m not insuring you, absolutely you should call yourself what you like - I just think it sounds old to me) 😉

You get called whatever your name your son or daughter want their child to call you. You don’t get a say. Just go with that they want and be grateful for grandchildren

this is similar to the danish for grandma. Meaning “mum-mum”.

Well, or what the child decides to call you once they’re at an age to do so. My parents and PILs had some kind of summit about who was going to be granny/grandma etc and DS, despite having those titles modelled for him by everyone, just called all four grandparents by the first names from the age of two or three.

So no-one should be called Grandad, either?

WTF? So the person who has to hear the name constantly and have it become part of her identity, doesn't get any say in it at all?

That's insane and absolutely unfair. And the 'just be grateful' element is incredible.

In most people's worlds there's a conversation that results in consensus or compromise. Everyone in this scenario matters. Grandparents don't just become an unimportant accessory to their offspring.

Because I’m the one that has to use it so they pick it up, we don’t see him that often. I just didn’t like it, it was weird and he was doing it to be difficult, as usual.

What’s wrong with ‘granny’? I always disliked ‘grandma’ (IMO it sounds old and fat) and nanny/nan, so I’ve always been granny.

Fine for you to think it's cringe, we all have our own tastes. But surely you can see how illogical it is to think that only one of the words with a word for mother in it is overstepping, while the others aren't?

I'm not entirely sure why I'm arguing for grandmum to not be seen as some nefarious plot, lol. I'm by no means a grandmother. Except my great grandmother (who was by all accounts wonderful) was grandmum. People can think that's wrong or embarrassing if they like, fine, but it's odd that some claim the word has never been used before or must have been made up by overstepping grandmothers. She wasn't the only one in our area called grandmum and she didn't overstep.

I'm wondering if it's a regional thing. I called both my grandmothers nanny not grandmum FWIW. Nanny is also fairly standard where I am, and similarly hated on mumsnet. I suppose my entire family is cringe/wrong for using regionalisms.

I think it goes with what you were brought up with - my DM was always Grannie as well. Whereas my DMiL prefers Nannie as do all her family.

I really dislike Nanny. I think of a nanny goat or someone employed to look after children.
When (if) 🤞the time comes, I like Mamó which is the Irish word for a grandmother, less formal than seanmáthair, which directly translates as old mother 😮.
I also like Nana.

My mum decided she was to be called nothing other than Nana. Grandma, Granny and ESPECIALLY Nanny were far too old.

Anyway first born grandchild my DNephew called her Nanny from the off, even when we all insisted Nana, and that’s her name now 🤣

Why not Grandma? Grandmum sounds a bit weird.
But you can call yourself what you like. And your grandkids might end up choosing to call you something slightly different.

I don't see why 'Pops' is a good name in comparison to Gran or Nan. You could call yourself 'Mops?! I don't think it matters that much surely?

My sisters kids call my mum mama apparently my mum called her grandma that. My kids just call her grandma not sure it really matters. My 2 eldest are a bit off having kids but I’ll be whatever they want me called I guess when the time comes
