Grandma is the best option.
Gan Gan is childish not posh.
Nanny reminds me of a goat.
Nana again childish
And Grand mum is just bloody ridiculous

this is similar to the danish for grandma. Meaning “mum-mum”.

My kids call my Mil mum-mum. I can't remember what we were going for but my eldest Said it as mum - mum and it just stuck. My nieces and nephews on Dh side also call her mum-mum. I think whatever you are called by the 1st grankid kinda sticks. I'm 'nanna 1st name I think because that's what my kids called my mum.

SummerSpringWater · 19/07/2026 17:57

Well you have made me laugh with all your views but it's actually made me a,l tne more of grandmum now

Gramz for short 😎

Whydoweedsgrowsofast · 19/07/2026 18:17

In my experience you don't get much say. The grandchild will decide. My DM was named Gagu by the first grandchild and it stuck.

Ariana12 · 19/07/2026 18:24

Oh you've got to.love MN. I hink(?) OP doesn't yet have any grandchildren and yet.. Is this really something women do before there are any granchildren? Id be worried to jinx it tbh. Maybe you could just borrow the Welsh Mamgu ( pronounced mamgi)

Steeleydan · 19/07/2026 18:26

Iam not sure gangan is posh, ive heard posh kids call grandmother's Maymay

Monty36 · 19/07/2026 18:29

Granny. The shorter version of Grandmother.
Grandmum sounds a bit confused.

Lexie365 · 19/07/2026 18:31

I'm irish and we've always called my grandmother's grandmum lol x

basiically · 19/07/2026 18:41

Its not weird at all.
I was born and raised in a family that dont use nan, granny or even mum or dad.
We use the names or nick names that are given to us.
We use mum dad nan if talking to others but in the family itself nope it`s names.

My sister got asked once why dont your kids call you mum, she said because mum is not my name its not on my birth certificate, every woman with kids have the same name mum thats not my name.

And no its not had any bad effect or left any trauma on the kids.

I just gave my opinion, I’m not forcing it on anyone. She asked for opinions, so that’s what I gave. You don’t say what region you are, so I cannot comment on that aspect.

I'm in Norfolk. Sorry I should have made it clear only the first paragraph was in response your reply to me. The rest was my musings on the fact that my family have used the name grandmum, despite other posters claiming it's not a thing.

Mykneesareshot · 19/07/2026 18:56

Gangan sounds stupid and grand mum sounds just as bad. So many other options.

Undercoverpepsicola · 19/07/2026 19:01

Ime you usually end up just getting called whatever your kids called your parents as that’s what they’ll default to when talking about you to the grandchildren.

I always find it a bit cringe worthy when women insist on being called x, y or z because their ‘too young’ to be called granny or whatever the default is in your area/family. You’re clearly not otherwise it wouldn’t be an issue. But really it doesn’t matter as long as the prospective parents are happy with it too.

That’s vile. I want to be Nanny Name-that-rhymes (it’s close enough to my real name) I’m 37 and I still have two Nannie’s - Nanny (nickname) and Nanny First Name.
And it’s wonderful. My mum is Nanny “Posh” and my MIL is Granny but I think Granny sounds really old.

I’m a granny. And cool….. 🤣

MammarOfOne · 19/07/2026 19:05

I’m Mamma and husband is GanGan. My dad is GanDad. I didn’t want the usual nannar (which is what my kids called my mum) and absolutely don’t want to be nanny (husbands mums name).

my DSIL is called GiGi.

inappropriateraspberry · 19/07/2026 19:43

Just be Gran then 🤷🏻‍♀️ You’ll probably find the children will end up calling you something completely different anyway!

Angelil · 19/07/2026 19:56

Rituelec · 19/07/2026 09:34

We say Oma.

Do you have Dutch in your family?
My parents are Oma and Opa to my kids because we live in NL and those are the Dutch names for grandmother/grandfather. My mum thought it would be a good name to help make sure the kids don’t feel left out when discussing their grandparents by name at nursery or referring to them in front of their friends. The names also didn’t sound that ‘old’ to us, whereas many English grandparent names are also old-sounding to me. I also didn’t want to usurp my grandparents’ names (Gran/Grandad, Mama/Papa and Nanny for stepnan; there was also my Great Nan). I wanted them to have a different grandparent identity to those people (of whom some are still alive).

I agree. Kids often end up choosing.
my maternal grandparents were always going to be grandma and grandpa but my eldest cousin had other ideas. He couldn’t say those words properly. What came out was ‘mama’ and ‘papa’ and that’s what those grandparents always were to all 4 of us cousins on that side of the family.

Lilyspickled · 19/07/2026 20:17

I’ve been Nanny for nearly 30 years, the GC had problems saying grandad, so he became DanDan.

Gingganggoo · 19/07/2026 20:34

I wanted to be nanna, but they all call me nanny or nan. I actually asked if I could just be my name but got shot down in flames lol.
I preferred grandma, but it was never considered as they've always had nanny or nan in their lives.
I don't see why so many hate "grand mum". 😂 Friends of mine used to get "ganny" through mispronunciation and it caught on.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/07/2026 20:39

I mean of course you can be called anything you and your DC agree on. But it is a bit of a weird trend that grandparents see to put so much thought into what they’re called.

Grandma, Granny, Nanny seem to be the top three, but I’ve never heard of anyone being Grandmum. It’s not wrong as such, I guess.

Yetanothername3 · 19/07/2026 20:41

Granny is perfectly fine and understood by all.

Catdoorman · 19/07/2026 21:53

I aspire to being a "Grandmama". Now that's posh.

ElizaJ74 · 19/07/2026 22:08

The joy of being a grandparent means you get to pick your own nick name of sorts.
Mines Gigi
If you love Grandmum then that should be yours x
