Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:06

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

I owe you all an explanation, particularly those who spotted something was off.

Yes, this was a reverse. I’m Anna.

I posted from my sitting-on-the-fence friend’s perspective because I genuinely wanted to understand how others would see her position, see if I was missing something, whether I was being unreasonable in what I’d asked of her, or whether there was a side to this I couldn’t see from where I was standing. I was also afraid I would get eviscerated for being childish petty or immature, which I worried I was or am.

The reason I know her perspective so well is because I know her extremely well. Over Twenty years I’ve come to know how she thinks, how she makes decisions, how she handles conflict. I wrote her perspective as honestly as I could.

There’s one more thing I should add. My friend told me early on that in her opinion, Emma had been cooling off on me because of two specific incidents, the one where I took Emma’s husband to task for saying something horrible about my sister, and the time when Emma and I had a heated political disagreement when the 3 of us were out for dinner. She presented this as speculation at the time. But thinking back on it now, and seeing how specific and certain she was about it, I’m wondering whether it was actually speculation at all, or whether she knew because Emma had told her directly.

To everyone who responded with genuine honesty and thoughtfulness, I thank you. It has really helped me to see things from a different perspective. This whole thing has been really painful for me at a time in my life when I need my friends more than ever. I have no support system near me anymore and with my last child leaving for college in September I really feel the loss of my friends.

I sincerely apologise to anyone who feels taken in or that they wasted their time on this thread. That was never my intention.

Well, now I’ve gone from supporting you to realising Emma is right. You are a PITA.
Reverse posters should be banned.

@Lilifer can I ask, when Mumsnet spoke with you regarding this thread did you tell them it was a reverse?

Apparently reverses don’t break talk guidelines. Hard disagree from me. I think they’re deceitful and compromise trust and good faith.

I absolutely agree. Apparently posts “not in the spirit of the site” break talk guidelines. Reverses are that tenfold.

I agree although I’m not convinced this is actually a reverse, all of that about speaking to “Emma” is just too convenient. I think the op is genuine and doesn’t like the fact that 97% of posters disagree with her

Maybe! Either way, just a load of bullshit.

What’s the point in people posting genuine, helpful responses if we can never be sure we’re not being catfished?

Makes a mockery of the board.

VelveteenRabbit1 · 17/07/2026 19:52

Bloody hell OP I’d be so disappointed if I was Anna. She’s crying out for support in every way and you’re there replying with memes?

keepincool · 17/07/2026 19:52

What a load of absolute bollocks. Your reverse just doesn't add up, especially with whoever you were meant to be's alleged meeting with Emma today. If it is a reverse why were you so hell bent on getting posts questioning your claims deleted? Surely the time to 'fess up was then?

I suppose this will all go towards Medium fodder...

I met up with Emma and asked her about the WhatsApp group removal of Anna, and asked her to tell me about the reason for the breakdown of their friendship. Emma said it’s been a slow realisation that Anna is not that nice of a person. She said she didn’t want to break his confidence but that Anna’s exDH had told her (Emma’s) DH about some of the stuff that happened during their separation and divorce. She said she also found Anna argumentative and difficult, and that her (Emma’s) dh had given her the full story of when Anna confronted him about the comment about her sister and that he had tried to apologise but she just wouldn’t accept it and kept giving out to him. Emma said she had tried to overlook all this and continue the friendship but that she had felt it was inauthentic now and that she couldn’t be around Anna. She accepted she should have done this sooner but that she was trying to stay friends. She also said she had gotten to know Anna’s ExDH’s partner and that she’s a lovely woman, and that Emma can’t stay friends with both and that it’s natural she would choose the new partner in all the circs.

i did push back, saying that the WhatsApp group thing felt quite cruel given Anna’s isolation now as me and her were Anna’s closest friends and also her lack of Dh for any support.

Emma said she felt a bit bad but that Anna was tougher than she looks and that I shouldn’t feel bad for her as she’s not all she seems.

there didn’t seem any point discussing it further at that point as Emma had made up her mind.

Now that I have heard both sides, I don’t think Emma is being completely unfair although I do feel strongly that the WhatsApp thing was not a nice thing to do.

right

so you’ve spoken to Emma and decided that everything she had said is truthful and she’s not in the erong

talk about not listening to all sides of the stor

edit. Hate reverses……but go Anna!

OriginalUsername2 · 17/07/2026 19:57

Not cool, OP

keepincool · 17/07/2026 20:07

Jesus I can’t believe people are being so harsh. I’ve tried to be supportive without actually taking a side. This isn’t primary school, I shouldn’t have to take a side. And it’s not easy. We all have stress in our lives and I don’t need any more. You are all judging me quite harshly without knowing much about me.

Why get so het up in this post if it's a reverse? If you're meant to be Anna, then people thinking you were the other friend and having a go wouldn't feel like a personal attack?

ConstantlyFuriosa · 17/07/2026 20:19

My Lord, this is the thread that keeps on giving! I’m afraid I don’t believe the ‘it’s a reverse’ line.

if this is truly you, Anna? I’m sorry about that. But it doesn’t add up.

Give it a rest, this is a waste of everyone's time.

GuiltyPleasure · 17/07/2026 21:40

It probably is a reverse, only because OP’s previous posting history does match with “Anna” & I do sympathise with her because she’s clearly dealing with a lot of issues in her life. But wasting everyone’s time by making up entire scenarios like the whole meeting with Emma is just ridiculous . I know now why I rarely get involved with a thread. Mumsnet should have either made OP admit it was a reverse straight after they’d spoken to her or put an amendment on the title themselves, instead of letting people post in good faith for another 24 hours.

Absolutely. Mumsnet have let the genuine posters on here down.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 17/07/2026 22:04

What I don’t understand if it’s a reverse is how strident OP was in the defence of Emma and saying we’d all been so harsh towards her as ‘Lilifer’. Would Anna have said that?

This thread is a headfuck.

LightningTree · 17/07/2026 22:22

I’m new to Mumsnet but if this is the standard of their invigilation It’s just wasting everyone’s time.

harriethoyle · 17/07/2026 18:33

Well done @LilyMumsnet - your testing of the OP’s veracity must have been really robust! 🙄🙈🤣

Haha. Yes how embarrassing.

Op grow up and stop talking rubbish. This whole thread has been a joke from the start.

LightningTree · 17/07/2026 22:47

If there is any veracity at all in this tale your subterfuge OP means I’m definitely team Emma now. My gran used to say that you can sometimes trust a thief, but you can never trust a liar.

McSpoot · 17/07/2026 23:13

If this is a reverse, you all deserve each other. And, yes, super bad look for MN’s investigations.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 17/07/2026 23:21

I can see why you do it in reverse though have admitted having a go at Emma’s husband and having a heated discussion with Emma about politics when there was only 3 of you out.
Find new friends but own your part in this too.
If there is actually a 3rd friend she needs a break from Anna and Emma.

LilacPuffin · 17/07/2026 23:47

A reverse? Riiiiight. 🙄

I want to clarify what ‘having a go at Emma’s husband’ actually means. We were at a friend’s 40th. My sister who is 6ft and was teased and bullied about her height all through her childhood and teenage years and still carries that, got up from the table to get a round of drinks for everyone, including him. As she walked away, out of her earshot, he watched her go and said, slurring, “look at that fucking high tower over there, what the fuck is that all about?” in front of everyone. I said one quiet sentence to him “do you have a problem with tall women?’ That was it. Then the following day I spoke to him privately and calmly and told him it was unacceptable. Yes, I own that. I own it completely and I’d do it every single time. That’s not my ‘part in this.’ That’s just what you do when someone you love is disrespected and mocked.

WhatWouldMyMamaSay · 18/07/2026 01:00

What a complete waste of everyone’s time.

No matter how well you say you know the person you’re pretending to be, a reverse just doesn’t work.

Absolutely pointless.
