got a phone call from my sister yesterday afternoon and she asked me what I was upto. I told her I was just watching Little House on the Prairie and she burst out laughing, shouted to her husband that I was watching it and he started howling. I said “what’s funny?” And she said “little house on the prairie!” ????

Anyway since then I’ve had multiple messages off her just saying little house on the prairie with a crying laughing face, messages of BIL asking if I’m still watching it with a laughing face then this morning I woke up to a picture message of the original show and laughing faces. I’ve been ignoring them but I’ve just seen she’s put it on Facebook and a number of people have put laughing faces?? I don’t get it!?

Ignore her OP, she's being stupid, and mocking you on FB just makes her look ridiculous. And nasty.

I'm going to watch, didn't realise there was a new version. And whilst I'm at it, I'll be looking for Follyfoot, Belle and Sebastian and Black Beauty for a bit of retro relaxation.

This thread inspired me to start watching the new one. Loving it!

That and the Walton's were two of my favourites as a kid in the 80s.
I actually cried when grandpa Walton died.
The old version is still on one of the TV channels.I don't watch it like I used to but now and again will watch an episode.
I also didn't know there was a new version.
I think they are being unkind to mock what you choose to watch.
Anne of green gables was also a real favourite of mine.i used to watch it with my gran every Christmas and have it on DVD.
I don't see the harm in watching but I do see the harm in people laughing and being horrible to others especially on social media.

Just ignore them. How childish is she? I have the whole original series of LHOTP on DVD which I only bought a couple of years ago - and I had never seen series 7-10 at all before I got the set. I have now watched all 8 episodes of the 1st series of the new version on Netflix. Jury is still out, as it is not the same as the original Michael Landon series ( which is fine and to be expected) and it does appear to be a little more like the books: the Osage native Indians do appear quite a bit and the Doctor who treated the family for Malaria WAS a black person.

However the books were written for children and lots of real life happenings were not included in Laura's books for starters -and she did change the timelines of when and where they lived, with at least one place never mentioned at all, because the real life Laura hated it. So maybe some things are what really happened as opposed to what was in the books.

But there are other things which are clearly not correct. The new series starts with the family leaving the Big Woods, but the children are much older than they were in real life. Think they were about 2/3 and 4/5 when they left the big woods but these children are a good few years older. Their clothing is far too good for what was a poor family and the dog Jack, took days to get back to them after the crossing of the river ( although that MAY be what happened in real life, but Laura didn't say so in the books I don't think)

Series one ends with them leaving Independence in Kansas and heading off to Walnut Grove, not long after Carrie was born, so we'll see. Think you have to look at it as not as a remake of the previous series but a new series standing on its own and it is better to not make comparisons. The Cast don't really gel for me yet as a family, but they may do in time. Ma is probably more like the real life Caroline was, not the gentle patient one depicted by Karen Grassle.

People read and watch things for all kinds of reasons. I love the books and have read them many times. The history, and how the homestead kind of life is arranged, is very interesting to me. I also enjoy rereading and watching calm things, as it is relaxing to me and I'm a bit of a stressy person.

I don't at all understand bullying behaviour, like your sister's. Please don't be put off doing what works for you, as the alternative is a stifled life

Ive not watched it yet , but its on my list , I'm hoping its as good as Netflix version of Anne of Green Gables (Anne with an E ) which I loved , and yes people laughed when I said I was watching that too .

I'm Native and we don't care as much about these things as white people want to believe we care.

I know the books inside out and back to front and think it's probably a reasonable balance/compromise between the books, reality, and adapting them to TV in a way that is acceptable to a modern audience.

Personally, I think you could just lift the dialogue straight from the books, in much the same way as the 1996 version of Pride and Prejudice did. But I understand why they would want to make it more diverse and representative than the books and have chosen to deviate from the novels and fill in some gaps.

I was prepared to be really disappointed but quite like it after three episodes. Unlike the recent version of Anne of Green Gables, which I thought was dreadful for adding in a load of unnecessary drama and sub-plot.

What I had completely forgotten since first hearing about it, is that Pa is played by the guy from the Christmas romcom Holidate! 😂 I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to see past that, but actually think he's quite good.

On a positive note: I had no idea there was a Netflix new series of this! I LOVE the books, never really got into the 90's tv thing but I'm here for a quality Netflix remake. Thanks for the tip, OP!

I think a lot of people remember watching it on Sundays when we were kids, so it’s nostalgia. Netflix have made a new version, so I imagine there will be a lot of adults who want to have a look at it. Your sister needs to grow up.

At best I can vaguely see why it might be mildly amusing, as in she's thinking it's a bit of a twee program to watch (although even then it's a bit weird to not just accept that people like different things it's not as if you're settling down in front of Peppa Pig with a glass of wine every evening), but repeatedly sending you pictures and asking about it is just a ridiculously bizarre overreaction. Do they not have much going on in their lives?
