Little House - hilarious??

got a phone call from my sister yesterday afternoon and she asked me what I was upto. I told her I was just watching Little House on the Prairie and she burst out laughing, shouted to her husband that I was watching it and he started howling. I said “what’s funny?” And she said “little house on the prairie!” ????

Anyway since then I’ve had multiple messages off her just saying little house on the prairie with a crying laughing face, messages of BIL asking if I’m still watching it with a laughing face then this morning I woke up to a picture message of the original show and laughing faces. I’ve been ignoring them but I’ve just seen she’s put it on Facebook and a number of people have put laughing faces?? I don’t get it!?

I never understand why people find it weird for somebody to watch or read something that doesn't stretch them to the full extent of their intellectual capacity, but which they nevertheless find entertaining and enjoyable.

Even if something is labelled 'adult' (i.e. for grown-ups, not necessarily filthy), there is a huge spectrum of levels and abilities within that very wide group; both the Financial Times and Pick Me Up are publications that are firmly aimed at adults!

I'd understand if a lone adult (without learning disabilities) was sitting down to enjoy an evening of In The Night Garden; but films/TV/books that are often enjoyed and understood by older children and teenagers (of which they were all once one)... what's the drama?

Horse in the house was good fun too.

She's being absolutely ridiculous and I'd be tempted to mute notifications from her on WhatsApp and ignore her for a few days until she gets over it.
I binge-watched it yesterday and enjoyed it. I can't remember the original very well though I did see it a couple of times in my childhood.
It was an easy watch and there was plenty in it to appeal to adults too, it's not just a kid's programme. It was interesting to learn about the Osage which I knew nothing about, although of course I was aware that settlers had gone out there and claimed land which belonged to the Osage so that aspect was informative.
It also made me want to read more about the Ingalls family.
Things like this can be enjoyed at all ages and you get something different out of it as an adult than a child would.

Lots of adults like children’s films and dramas.
I like the Shrek films.
Sometimes they are better than adult films are.
Especially if it reminds you of your own childhood or you remember reading the books.

My super butch and very manly husband has put it on our watch list, I wasn't bothered but now I'm intrigued enough to make him wait and watch it with me.

I understand that new versions of the books have been heavily edited.

No I don't believe they have been edited at all. Where did you hear that?
Although I do wonder if the first line of Little House in the Big Woods has been changed because "Once upon a time, sixty years ago" made sense in 1932 when the book was first published - but now almost 100 years later is a bit confusing.
I might check a new edition next time I am in Waterstones out of curiosity.
Edit: actually Google says a few lines and words have been changed but not that much.

The 70s one I watched through out the summer holidays. I din't even know it was a true story! They made up the husband for Mary when she went blind though

Such a strange reaction from your sister. It is a mainstream drama that has been widely reviewed. It may not be to her taste but plenty of other people will enjoy it. I think it is a sign of the times that nostalgic dramas, set in the past, have such appeal, because people long to have a bit of relief from the present. And people enjoy stories about families and connection and dealing with adversity. I’d say it is your sister who is out of step in not recognising this.

I can’t watch the new version, I am an original series loyalist. Have watched every episode and there are a lot!

When it was revealed that Tom Hardy was going to read a children’s book for bbc kids show ( bedtime story or something?) a lot of mumsnetters were taping it for themselves.

Anyway, back to the real world. It’s on my list of things to watch and I won’t hear any criticism of it thank you very much. Classic family viewing, good for an autumnal Sunday evening.

Someone up thread mentioned Jill’s Gymkhana - I wonder why that hasn’t been filmed? Bunch of teenagers, some adults, horses, no special effects. They were written between 1949 and 1962 I think, but they’re quite timeless and could be set any time.

She was my heroine and not always a good one sometimes ! They were well written.

I lived LHOTP when I was a child. Would I watch it now or the remake? No. But I’m sure loads of adults will.
