I’m pissed and haven’t been able to sleep for days!
My mum was diagnosed with a terminal illness last week. She is now oxygen‑dependent 24/7 and has extremely limited strength — she cannot stand, cook, or manage basic daily tasks.
When I visited her at the weekend, her living conditions were deeply concerning. She lives with an alcoholic partner, and there is a feral dog in the home that makes it unsafe for visitors or carers. My mum was sleeping on a filthy mattress placed directly on bare, dirty floorboards.
I did what I could during my visit: we decorated her main living spaces, laid carpets, and built her a proper bed. Her partner is unable to help due to severe gout caused by his alcohol addiction, and my sibling is not currently providing support.
I live 3.5 hours away.
My mum needs daily assistance, but she is emotionally dependent on her partner and refuses to leave. I could potentially work from Scotland, but she has no internet access and no space for me to stay.
The only nearby family accommodation is my cousin’s home, which is nearly two hours away by public transport each way. Meanwhile, my husband, children, and life are here.
I have contacted all relevant services, and she is now on waiting lists, but I am extremely worried about her welfare — particularly her ability to feed herself and remain safe in her current environment.
