Hubbys job at risk because of family

Pickybitsheatwave · 24/06/2026 23:11

DH trusted his brother with his Clubcard employee card. He gave it to his partner to use as she was doing the food shops. She’s been caught twice stealing with a trolley full and hubby is now being investigated at work. Apparently BIL knew she had a habit with stealing as he already pre warned her not to use the card if she is going to be stealing. I should add that they are very comfortable and don’t need to be stealing. She is the other woman and I have never been able to gel with her. Now i can’t bare the thought of being around her even more. DH is in a management role so i can imagine they are going to take this very seriously.

I feel like DH is downplaying it all because he doesn’t want to rock the boat but I am fuming!!!

Am I over reacting? Hubby says he didn’t want to tell me because he knew I’d over react. She’s potentially put my husband at risk of losing his job.

A colleague of my MILs lost her job at Waitrose for a similar situation- no stealing involved but she gave her DIL her discount card when that is strictly not allowed. You get allowance to order one family member a card and they must live at your address.

I'm sorry OP, he was stupid to lend it out. I really hope he doesn't lose his job.

None of this makes any sense

Oh, SIL haven’t you stirred enough shit yet. Do you really need to be even nastier?

It makes perfect sense - what bit are you unsure of?

The daft thing is, Tesco allows every staff member to set up a card to someone that isn't at the same address - so they could have had their own card.

(It used to have to be someone at the same address, but it changed a couple of years ago)

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 25/06/2026 06:44

I think he needs to deny all knowledge and claim they stole the card

FacingTheBack · 25/06/2026 06:44

Wind them up and watch them go

Blueberrybonanza · 25/06/2026 06:44

My son would not let me use his employee discount card as I didn't live with him and he said it was a sackable offence (he is management) the use is monitored and you can easily see who has used it by electronic logs and cctv footage, his partner had it. Why didn't you have the card?

Only paying for a few items and stealing the rest is one thing. But using the discount card at the same time on the few items you’ve paid for serves no purpose other than to set up this ridiculous story.

Dollymylove · 25/06/2026 06:47

As a manager he should know better. I worked for one of the Big Four and the rules are very clear. Only your spouse or a relative living at the same address may use the card

You couldn't imagine that someone willing to steal to reduce costs, would also use a card that would reduce their costs even further?

TheseWordsAreMine · 25/06/2026 06:49

I have had a thank you email from head office.

Please give names OP.

Shittyyear2025 · 25/06/2026 06:55

Your husband's job is at risk because he handed HIS staff discount card to someone outside the household. The SIL shoplifting is a red herring really.

My mum's staff card was queried when she used it in a store near my house when she visited me at uni (180 miles from her house) - what your DH has done could absolutely be gross misconduct.

They are quite transparent with how the rules work op.

It’s a bit of a plot hole, isn’t it? You could just scan one less item instead…

Sounds like a good idea for him to lose his job. He was actively participating to defraud his employers by giving his employee discount card to someone else which is against the rules anyway, instead of quite legitimately using the valid alternative option of applying for a Family Member card, and he has such poor judgement that the person using it was also a thief. Why would any employer want a dishonest employee with poor judgement skills who contravenes simple policies? I'm very sorry for your family's plight @Pickybitsheatwave but your DH has only himself to blame
