Hubbys job at risk because of family

Pickybitsheatwave · 24/06/2026 23:11

DH trusted his brother with his Clubcard employee card. He gave it to his partner to use as she was doing the food shops. She’s been caught twice stealing with a trolley full and hubby is now being investigated at work. Apparently BIL knew she had a habit with stealing as he already pre warned her not to use the card if she is going to be stealing. I should add that they are very comfortable and don’t need to be stealing. She is the other woman and I have never been able to gel with her. Now i can’t bare the thought of being around her even more. DH is in a management role so i can imagine they are going to take this very seriously.

I feel like DH is downplaying it all because he doesn’t want to rock the boat but I am fuming!!!

Am I over reacting? Hubby says he didn’t want to tell me because he knew I’d over react. She’s potentially put my husband at risk of losing his job.

My late mum worked for Tesco the rules were the colleague clubcard discount was only for family members who lived with you. But you couldn’t give them the card to use you had to go with them. A second card could be ordered but it was usually only for a spouse. I’ll be surprised if they’ve changed the rules. What DH has done is gross misconduct

I think that DH isn't telling Op the complete story.

maidai78 · 25/06/2026 07:02

I worked in one of the big supermarkets years ago. Very explicitly told that misuse of the discount card is a sackable offence.

Read the manual.

Are you drunk?

Ethelspagetti · 25/06/2026 07:04

I would deny all knowledge and say I’ve lost my card and cancel it. Then never lend the new one out.

You have no idea about retail. It's 2026.

It’s a bit of a plot hole, isn’t it? You could just scan one less item instead…

It's just at well you did!

A) you have no idea who op is or where her husband works
B) Tesco are already aware that the card was misused

It's also quite remarkable that you got a reply in just twenty minutes, especially given that you reported at 6.30am!

Such a hero

Dollymylove · 25/06/2026 07:08

Sure, all transactions can be found. Of course they can.

But they might need more than ops username in order to do so.

But of course - you asked for names. I'm sure op will very quickly be on the case to pass that info on to you 😂

Backedoffhackedoff · 25/06/2026 07:17

Checkout supervisor drunk on the power they don’t usually experience more like. What a loser

Sassylovesbooks · 25/06/2026 07:17

If your husband gave his brother his own card, when he knew he should have ordered a separate one for him, then yes, I think he could be in the shit. He shouldn't have been allowing his brother to use the card, let alone anyone else. The fact his brother's partner has been stealing, whilst using the card, makes the entire situation worse.

Crumpled86 · 25/06/2026 07:19

Whether he could trust his brother or not it doesn't matter. Handing over his own card will be considered misuse of the card and they take that sort of stuff seriously. He should have ordered another card. The only way around it I see is to say that the card was stolen or misplaced.

ToiletKaren · 25/06/2026 07:19

I wouldn't assume he/she is telling the truth about informing Tesco.

Newabodemode · 25/06/2026 07:19

Fixed the thread title for you OP

Hubbys job at risk because of family he breached his contract of employment/ cheated his employer.

99bottlesofkombucha · 25/06/2026 07:20

Speakeasier · 25/06/2026 00:37

The thing is though by enabling his brother to use his card he’s conspiring to commit fraud/steal from the company he works for. How can he not see that? At the very least that has to be a final written warning but I’d imagine it’s gross misconduct and immediate dismissal. How on earth will he get another similar role without a reference?

Does your husband’s family have a tenuous grasp of ethics?

Oh I absolutely don't believe it. Who gets a reply within 20 minutes at 6.30am from a major retailer?

Who is we? Do you get a staff plaudit or incentive - asshole of the month badge?

Duvetdayforme · 25/06/2026 07:29

Your DH is a fool. Why didn’t he do things properly and order a card for his brother? Then he wouldn’t be at risk of losing his job even if SIL stole. The disciplinary matter here is the failure to follow the correct procedure.

Obviously SIL stealing is a criminal matter but that’s just how they found out what DH had done.

Avie29 · 25/06/2026 07:31

You could plead ignorant and say you didn’t realise you couldn’t let family use your discount- Morrisons employees have a friends and family discount which i know you don’t have to be living with the employee to use, you could just say that you thought it was a similar thing?
