Hubbys job at risk because of family

Pickybitsheatwave · 24/06/2026 23:11

DH trusted his brother with his Clubcard employee card. He gave it to his partner to use as she was doing the food shops. She’s been caught twice stealing with a trolley full and hubby is now being investigated at work. Apparently BIL knew she had a habit with stealing as he already pre warned her not to use the card if she is going to be stealing. I should add that they are very comfortable and don’t need to be stealing. She is the other woman and I have never been able to gel with her. Now i can’t bare the thought of being around her even more. DH is in a management role so i can imagine they are going to take this very seriously.

I feel like DH is downplaying it all because he doesn’t want to rock the boat but I am fuming!!!

Am I over reacting? Hubby says he didn’t want to tell me because he knew I’d over react. She’s potentially put my husband at risk of losing his job.

I’m taking the piss?
I genuinely have no idea what your point is. Gross misconduct allows for instant dismissal, of course this is only a problem for the guy being sacked, we all know the rest of humanity remains unaffected Confused
What on earth are you actually on about?

is it illegal though?

gamerchick · 25/06/2026 15:24

Pickybitsheatwave · 25/06/2026 13:38

Yes DH is at fault no denying that. Im just disgusted that she went there filled a whole trolley up and then swiped my husbands card the cheek of it! BIL has apologised but I think it’s disgusting. We have three kids and at not one moment she thought about that. Vile

Well, you now have an excuse to bin them off.

Your husband is an idiot. He probably should start looking for a job, unless he's willing to frame bil for theft of his card.

I think you're being a bit pedantic here.

You were responding to a comment about "legal" and "illegal" use of the discount card.

I assume the person meant as per the company policy.

Yes so maybe using legal and illegal to refer to a company policy is a teeny bit dramatic?

I hope the OP comes back and updates everyone with the inquiry findings. I doubt this could regarded as fraud, but Tesco could possibly insist it’s gross misconduct. The theft of goods is a side issue and not one that the OP’s husband is implicated in - as far as we know. I’m keen to find out what happens!

I wouldn’t hold my breath. Because he’s a manager I can guarantee the investigation will take ages unless he’s suspended and then they’ll be made to wrap it up quickly because they don’t like paying wages to people who’ve been suspended. I’d be amazed if he keeps his job, colleague discount misuse is one of the top reasons people get sacked from Tesco and I’ve never known anyone to get away with it because the terms and conditions are clearly defined when you start your employment.

While its awful she did this, I agree. Your Husband wont be losing his job for her theft, he would be losing it for misuse of his staff discount. That was occurring with or without the theft, he knew the rules and did it anyway.

The theft is not great but thats not what may lose him his job so you are focusing on the wrong thing, they cant fire him for someone else stealing. They would be getting rid of him for stealing, misuse of that discount is the same as theft, it wasnt intended to share around everyone and he would have been told the rules of use and as management he would be pretty clear on the rules.

Edited

I think she was using legal/illegal as a proxy for compliant, not to be dramatic. I don't imagine she thinks OP's DH is going to be thrown in jail.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 25/06/2026 15:35

I’d say she stole it.

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · 25/06/2026 15:35

Pickybitsheatwave · 25/06/2026 00:19

Ahh well I hope he loses it anyway! As apparently I think to deeply into things and I’m making it sound worse than it is. Good luck to him.

How bizarre that he is more annoyed at you for your reaction than BIL AND his bit on the side for her actions?!

LTB while he still has a job!!

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · 25/06/2026 15:35

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 25/06/2026 15:35

I’d say she stole it.

If he hasn’t already done this, I would also do this. Say it was left out on the side at home and get a slap on wrist.

letmebetheone · 25/06/2026 15:38

If it's Tesco he will lose his job. The additional card holder has to live at the same address. Letting someone else use your clubcard is dealt with as theft from the company.

Chritrup · 25/06/2026 15:39

On a wider point, if people keep taking the piss with these perks, guess what happens? The perks get withdrawn. For everybody, pisstaker and non-pisstaker alike.

CatsMagic · 25/06/2026 15:47

Oh corne on, I know it’s hot but the amount of absolute hysteria on this thread about a bloody staff discount card is ridiculous.

OP your DH is likely to get a disciplinary for letting his Brother use his card as it’s against the company policy, so long as he admits it was foolish and wrong and commits to not doing again he should get a warning and note on his file. He will not be immediately frogmarched out the building followed by Sister Olenna shouting SHAME , SHAME …

That’s not true, Tesco usually dismisses for this.

Have you or do you know anyone who works/has worked in retail?

They take abuse of staff discount very seriously.

You’re assuming he’s shop floor. He might be tescos head of property or something.

Same rules apply for everyone no matter what your position. There’s no company handbook for in store staff and another one for head office staff.

My air con is set to 69 degrees (f), so no heat induced hysteria here at least.

It’s gross misconduct, ‘bloody staff discount code’ or not. That he’s management actually makes it worse, and he cannot seriously plead ignorance. He’s also done it repeatedly, which is something likely to be revealed in the course of the investigation. If he’s lucky he’ll ‘just’ receive a warning and have his privileges removed, but he is facing dismissal.

He will be required to protect his card, everyone who does this will say it was stolen,

ScotiaLass · 25/06/2026 16:23

In this situation where SIL obviously has no respect for your DH and is a known thief I would seriously consider telling DH's employer that the card was also stolen.

Fact she’s used it before, and multiple times, means that’s not going to work.

Exactly.

I first started working for a retailer with a discount card when I was 20 (a long time ago) and even then it was common knowledge that they monitor transactions made using staff discount cards. Strange patterns of spending, unknown payment cards, unusual locations can and do get picked up. And that was before self checkouts with CCTV.

Hopefully anyone reading this who works in retail (or knows anyone who does) and wasn't aware of this, is now.
