I think it's really nice – I love capybaras! I would be happy to serve that at my own birthday party.

Homemade tastes better too, in my opinion. My mum likes to buy professional cakes for big occasions and they always look better than they taste.

It looks a little bit like the poo emoji, but it’s not without charm!

Would I serve it? Honestly no, but that’s purely because it’s not my style of baking, and I don’t like to put non-edible items on cake. What matters is if the 8yo in question likes it!

Poo emoji 😂

It’s edible

It's an absolutely gorgeous cake and I see no reason why your DD would be embarrassed. How lucky she is to have a mum like you!!! Don't overthink it, you've gone to a lot of effort and I'd be so proud if I had managed to make that!! Just enjoy the big day!!!

And if people compliment the cake, say thank you so much! I'm really happy with how it turned out! 🤩

purplecorkheart · 23/06/2026 15:04

No, it is fine. I would guess a bit messy to eat so I would have plenty of napkins to hand.

I hope the eight year old is grateful for the hard work that went into the cake.

Chewbecca · 23/06/2026 15:05

Yes, absolutely!
A homemade cake, with all its wobbly bits, is ALWAYS better than a bought cake. It's because it's made with love.

TurnAngerIntoHope · 23/06/2026 15:07

You can tell you put a lot of time and effort into it, I think it’s lovely and looks like I would taste good too. Of course it wouldn’t be embarrassing to serve.

I wasn’t implying it was made of faeces or anything 🤣. I meant the cake toppers - they’re plastic, aren’t they? I tend to use edible toppers because I have learnt the hard way that people can be much stupider than expected! So everything I put on a cake is edible including the decor.

We live in a very wealthy area and all custom made cakes, which I’ve had before,

OK, but the homemade ones are often best in terms of flavour and they're personal to the birthday girl/boy, like this one. I often make a fairly basic Victoria sponge with butter icing (with decorations like yours) and guests often comment on how good it tastes- yours will be equally delicious.

InterIgnis · 23/06/2026 15:09

Going against the grain given the wider context, I can see an eight year old being embarrassed because it isn’t like the cakes her friends have had at their parties. Some kids are totally fine with standing out and being different, but a lot just want to fit in and be like their friends.

On a personal level, it wouldn’t bother me at all, but I’m not the kid in question.

godmum56 · 23/06/2026 15:09

its lovely. And 8 year olds are not allowed to humiliate their Mum.

DidntLikeTheEnding · 23/06/2026 15:09

It looks fine as cakes go but maybe a bit babyish for an 8 year old.

FWC2026 · 23/06/2026 15:11

You should be massively embarrassed!!

send it to me immediately & I'll dispose of it for you Then you can order a professional tasteless one to appease the snotty parents!

Capybaras as THE best 💕

AllTheChicken · 23/06/2026 15:11

I think its brilliant, and would happily serve it! If you wanted to make it a bit more grown up, could you add malteasers around the bottom and dotted in the icing instead of the edible daisies? (There's nothing wrong with them at all, and I love edible paper, but just a suggestion!)

GivesYourHosieryaFright · 23/06/2026 15:11

It's cute and I would definitely eat it. ❤️

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 23/06/2026 15:12

DD had a few professionally made cakes for birthdays, along with a fair few made by DP.

As an adult, the ones she can actually remember were all the homemade ones.

Bristolandlazy · 23/06/2026 15:15

No it's lovely, it's cute and made with love. Chocolate cake, what's not to love.

Terriblytwee · 23/06/2026 15:15

Is this a humblebrag or something?

whiteroseredrose · 23/06/2026 15:16

I like it!

spiderlight · 23/06/2026 15:16

I think it's brilliant! Really cute, really chocolatey, loads of capybaras - what's not to like? Honestly, you've done a fab job and she'll love it.

Terriblytwee · 23/06/2026 15:16

It’s lovely btw

Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday · 23/06/2026 14:50

You are all too kind as it’s quite obviously homemade 🤣
Dd having Capybara themed party, so not too babyish, but she’s going through a weird phase where she’s starting to get embarrassed by things, not sure if she’ll be disappointed and just really hate the thought of me embarrassing her.
We live in a very wealthy area and all custom made cakes, which I’ve had before, but have spent a lot on the venue and also sort of fed up with the perfect ones.
But I also feel sick at the thought of presenting this and am cringing a lot 😬 and wondering why I didn’t just go with the easier option!

not everyone has the £ for the gordon Ramsey of cakes, that cake is lovley, now yes if it was at a professional cake show then thats different, but for a party thats great

@InterIgnis For my DD's eighth birthday, I made a Hogwarts castle (not particularly well) and one of the towers fell off while we were transporting it to the venue. Everyone thought it was great, even with a dodgy tower!

8-year-olds aren't the same as self-conscious 13-year-olds, this cake is lovely and it'll taste amazing.

TheJoyousHiker · 23/06/2026 15:20

I think home-made cakes are the best and the charm is they aren’t perfect and it’s the thought and care that went into making them. For years, when my children were small, their birthday cakes sometimes were blocks of ice cream on on a platter covered in Jellytots, Smarties and the like, we also had the red-velvet cake with cream-cheese icing covered in sprinkles, others decorated with buttercream, edged with chocolate fingers with smarties on top, as they got older and I had more time, there were sometimes decorated with fondant and hand-made decorations. None perfect but all were delicious!and it’s love,y looking back at photos of them.

Yours looks lovely, if I’d change anything I’d have used buttercream without any colouring or added in a tiny amount of cocoa powder.

Mercuryvenus · 23/06/2026 15:21

I would be happy to get it.
