AIBU to challenge the school’s wording about pupils rolling skirts up?

GreenSalon · 19/06/2026 17:50

Weekly newsletter today from DC’s secondary school contained a paragraph on uniform including the fact that there have been complaints from the public about “pupils who choose to wear skirts” rolling them up to wear them extremely short. It finishes with asking parents to speak to their children about why this is “not a good idea”.

Now, apart from the fact I assume that they must mean girls, is this not clearly implying that short skirts = making themselves vulnerable and if is, then if anything bad happens as a result it is their own fault? I thought we had moved beyond this kind of nonsense.

I only have boys at the school not girls but want to write to the head to point out how utterly sexist this is. DH agrees with me pov but thinks I shouldn’t write. AIBU?

I simply asked whether you thought the majority of mothers were concerned about this issue that so many of us see because of men’s feelings?

as surely you just realise - that simply
wont be the case

But yes you’ll respond about the language used

Back so soon?

We've had 900 plus posts with many, many sneers and no-one admitting their insults and 'sweaty' piss taking comments were wrong so I'm not sure why you insist on pretending it doesn't matter? These people are out there, parents and allegedly teachers.

Their attitude is the problem not the uniform.

<Disclaimer underwear should not be visible in any setting by any person>

Perturbance · 26/06/2026 20:46

As I thought. You don’t want to actually engage on a question aside from going on and on about the language

it was sickening! Honestly obscene.

but is that all you wish to engage on?

I thought a fairly straightforward question @Gloriia

ps I agree that the language by some has been truly sickening

I'm not sure how many times I need to say I support a dress code /uniform policy and don't want to see anyone's underwear in any professional setting.
Words and appalling attitudes matter though even if you think 'they've all gone now'.

That isn’t what I’m asking!!!!

Perturbance · 26/06/2026 20:54

My question is…

do you think that the majority of posters of this thread will be mothers? and that their primary concern will NOT be men’s feelings but genuine safety fears?

'and that their primary concern will NOT be men’s feelings'

Their 'primary concern' has sadly been muddied by the repeated slurs.

Now, you think insulting schoolgirls is not ok <well done> but sadly if what you say is true and a lot of these god awful attitudes have come from parents then that should concern you far more than skirt length.

wtf

I think the language employed by some has been vile and sickening
dod you see my above response to @CricketIsASport

what on earth have I said aside from ask you a question?

Perturbance · 26/06/2026 21:38

@Gloriia many posters did
NOT use foul language.

and I’m asking about those… do you honestly think their concern is “men’s feelings”?

my concern has bugger all to do with men’s feelings and everything to do with the sad reality that there are far too many predatory men out there for young teen girls to be wearing incredibly short school skirts not to be something to be concerned about

Gloriia · Yesterday 08:10

Very few challenged the excessive awful language, so obviously it's a snapshot of what many parents and alleged ex teachers obviously think! That surely bothers you?

Look town centres at lunch time may have schoolkids in short skirts, they may also have college kids in nude legging and bare midriffs, and?! Stop obsessing over skirt length when most adhere to it and even if they don't, so what.

Girls everywhere at the mo in shorts and bikini tops are you concerned for their welfare or is it only the very specific scenario of town centres at lunch times and school skirts that concern you?!

Pervs are the problem . Not schoolgirls clothes.

Gloriia · Yesterday 08:11

'and I’m asking about those… do you honestly think their concern is “men’s feelings”?'

Many posters parroted it makes men and boys fell uncomfortable so, yes sadly.

Have you managed to come up with one positive/benefit for girls for wearing such tiny skirts?

CricketIsASport · Yesterday 08:27

I'm laughing at how no substantive discussion has gone on for pages and pages. Just the sides parroting the same thing again and again.

Dressing inappropriately for school is wrong. All we ever did was say it as it is. Not to them directly, but just describing what we're all thinking.

Men and boys feel uncomfortable - yes that's true. Women feel uncomfortable. People in general feel uncomfortable when seeing others walk around barely clothed. Some of us have shame and decency. Perhaps people can teach their daughters that.

CricketIsASport · Yesterday 08:34

I don't know about "colleges" that allow midriff to show. Then again my children are all grammar school educated where there was a uniform to follow and they followed it.

If a teacher said they were "scruffy" for an untucked shirt, that was actioned upon by tucking in the shirt. Not having a hissy fit about the language used.

What's appropriate (still debatable) for a social event with friends isn't the same for what's appropriate in a learning and professional environment where people are dressed appropriately.

Gloriia · Yesterday 09:23

'I don't know about "colleges" that allow midriff to show. Then again my children are all grammar school educated where there was a uniform to follow and they followed it.'

Grammar school educated oo get you! Grin

You don't know about colleges. Ok let me enlighten you, the very same schoolkids who some of you are so very alarmed about showing a thigh at school go to sixth firm and wear even less? Male teachers cope, uptight shoppers in town at lunch time cope. Do stop focusing on school skirts, it's not a good look.

Gloriia · Yesterday 09:30

'Have you managed to come up with one positive/benefit for girls for wearing such tiny skirts?'

The benefit from not telling schoolgirls that they are whores/tramps/baboons depending how they dress has far reaching implications for their self worth, confidence and esteem.

The benefit of imposing a dress code in a professional calm manner without one sniff of blame and perv concerns will be far reaching too and more likely to get compliance. Hope that helps.

Not what I asked and you know that.

If you quote me I'll respond as I like, within TGs.

The problem is the appalling names, sneers and language were right through the thread and only challenged by a handful of posters. We had one alleged ex teacher likening school girls to baboons flashing their privates that ok with you?

Now conveniently you want to sweep it under the carpet because 'they have all gone' apparently. Phew!

Look, for the trillionth time no one should show their underwear. Whether a schoolkid, a teacher or a dinner lady. Dress codes are fine just impose them and support them with neutral language which you agree with. Well done!

Edited

Language for effect: similes, metaphors, hyperbole. Humour.
I can't be bothered to re-read all this rubbish but I think you will find that posters have been using those language techniques. Certainly, the baboon one is a simile, and a humorous one, indicating exactly why the girls are wearing such short skirts.

Gloriia · Yesterday 10:34

'Certainly, the baboon one is a simile, and a humorous one, indicating exactly why the girls are wearing such short skirts'

Fascinating. Yet a recent poster has announced all those mocking schoolgirls had 'gone now'. Yet here are.

Then that's wrong and the colleges should have and enforce a dress code. My kids were bright so didn't go to these institutions where standards were lacking.

We aren't directly insulting the girls to their faces. We are just describing what we think the masses of girls who do this resemble.

If they didn't want to be described this way (on a forum they have no knowledge about) perhaps dress appropriately. What about that?

If you don’t realise that your language and attitude has a far wider impact than a thread on MN , then that’s part of the problem. If you don’t realise that certain language and attitudes are not reserved only for the girls who you think deserve it, then that’s an even bigger problem.

When you use language like this, even when the people you are talking about can’t hear you, @CricketIsASport, you normalise the use of misogynistic language, and contribute to a society that is more unpleasant and less safe for women and girls.
