I grew up in a working class family. The values I was taught were that you stood on your own two feet and it was no one else's job to do what you could do for yourself.

If you were hurt, you were expected to get up and go and clean yourself up - and stop whining about it unless it was actually serious. If you were ill, you went to bed and if you were lucky some magic lucozade appeared.

If you were sad, then you were sad. If life was unfair then that was just how life was and you needed to deal with it.

You never ever sought charity or took benefits when you were able to work or put up with less. You lived to your own means, not to what you saw on TV or at school - and if you wanted that lifestyle it was up to you to get it.

Today everyone has the expectation that someone must help them, that they are obliged to help them - even before they have made any attempt to actually do the work of helping themselves. They expect luxuries like holidays, pets, new clothes and treats when they do nothing to earn this.

I think self sufficiency is a value that needs to return to our society.

Clearly … as they seem to have a problem feeding their children but not funding a TV subscription.
Why should the tax payer have to fund your kids school lunches but you can sit at home watching Netflix and opening a bottle of wine. Welfare should be for the necessities only, you want to added extras then fund it yourself.

Netflix is £6pm. It is hardly a luxury thing.

Thankfully, welfare is given in money because it gives people autonomy and agency over their own finances.

You are one of the problems this country has … they are plenty of new reports regards people like you, hopefully this will be looked and very soon!

why is this poster a problem? seriously? she has a disability and she works. That's bloody brilliant. You do realise the complexity of the term 'disability' don't you? And that having any kind of disability comes with additional costs, many of which anyone able-bodied would never need to think about? Because this poster is quite clearly able to manage both work and disability, she shouldn't have those additional costs taken into account? You realise that her employer will be making adjustments to have her work there, some of which (all of which) may well have been funded by the Government. And that's amazing - because the employer takes on a person with disabilities and that same person pays taxes. Win bloody win.

Why are some people so fucking hard of understanding the bigger picture?

Bbcsounds · Today 18:34

I can’t wait to see @BuildbyNumbere queuing up to get my disabilities.

Bbcsounds · Today 18:35

I don’t have Netflix. Just for the avoidance of doubt I do have prime, but that’s for the convenience of parcel deliveries

Have you any idea how much it costs to adapt a car?

Have you any idea what pip is even designed to be for?

my pip doesn’t even touch the sides. And if you want to swap me for my disabilities, go ahead.

You shouldn’t be on here gloating about how you are a higher earner and get PIP then!! Be grateful you’re getting help, many people don’t.

Yes, and I think that is a big problem.
Netflix was one example btw.

But it’s not a necessity, is it?

How is it a problem?

What problem will be solved by giving vouchers instead of money?

As I’ve already said, welfare money should be spend on the necessities. Luxuries should be self funded!!

Is there a list of right and wrong things?
I am on UC, and have never been given a list of what I am to spend it on.

If this list does not exist in any sort of official policy, then it is safe to assume it is bullshit and exists in your head.

Please do not hold other people to your own weird fictional standards.

Tubi is free

Bbcsounds · Today 18:42

Also. Thats an incredibly nasty thing to say to me. I work hard. I pay taxes. I’ve been awarded PIP by the state to support me with additional costs of my disabilities. I guarantee you you wouldn’t swap with me.

No unfortunately there isn’t … but I have no idea why the tax payer should be funding anything outside of basic necessities.

If my husband lived in the states his insurance would have covered most of our out of pocket costs that we has in the UK.

Well then. Stop launching into a tirade about something that does not exist.

People spending their UC/PIP on Netflix and wine are not doing anything wrong.

If they pay out. Nothing to stop you getting insurance in the UK anyway.
