DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

anotherdaytosmile · 13/06/2026 12:27

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

Just me and him in the bath. Are we mingers?

I personally dont share bar soap and IL would destroy my skin

We have our own - he uses whatever cheapest,I use Nesti Dante

Why all this hand wringing, just use whatever you like Confused

Imperial Leather smells vaguely like BO. Not surprised somebody's cat liked it.

If it smells of BO it’s not the real thing!

I’m on holiday in France at the moment and the first thing I did was pop out for a bar of petit marsellaise for the shower. The suitcase is going home full of them.

DidYeAye16 · 13/06/2026 14:11

If anyone used the same soap as me id be disgusted. I've got a tropics one and everyone else uses shower gel. Why don't you just get what you want and use different soap.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/06/2026 14:11

Imperial leather reminds me of visiting my grandparents as a child so I do like it (was and still is my favourite place)

But I agree with everyone - there’s no right or wrong answer and you can both get your own soup.

We have liquid soap for hands and shower gel for the bath but a nice bar soap is a lovely thing.

RubySparrow · 13/06/2026 14:11

I use a handmade soap or sometimes Shield soap if I can find. But I do like Imperial Leather. In my downstairs toilet we have liquid hand wash and soap. I use a handing soap holder.
It’s from Etsy and I push a metal bottle cap into soap and it stays, it’s so cool. I’m easily pleased!

Your DH wants to smell normal, which is why he chose normal soap.

Jo Malone is lady-scented. Your DH does not want to smell like a lady, which is why he does not want to use lady-scented soap or lady-scented body wash.

Tel12 · 13/06/2026 14:12

Back in the day pubs used to have bar soap and a roller towel. Come to think of it they didn't always have soap.....

Whosthetabbynow · 13/06/2026 14:12

I’m old enough to remember Katie Boyle in the Camay ad. I loved Woodleigh Green apple soap in the 80s

TheBot · 13/06/2026 14:13

likeafishneedsabike · 13/06/2026 13:17

I assumed that everybody had left their soap bars in the 80s and now used shower gel. And yet everyone here is behaving as if bars of soap are normal, not retro. Mind blown.

I switched to liquid briefly but then back to bars because I prefer it and it's more environmentally friendly.

I love Imperial Leather. It’s the smell. It’s so nostalgic for me. I use it all the time. I wouldn’t call it luxury though.

Those big chunky bars would slip out of my hands and land on my foot and I'd break something !

I bought some Nesti Dante soap a while ago (on a recommendation from MN), pretty picture on the wrapper , huuuge bar .
I spend many days admiring how the bruise on my foot went from purple to yellow as it faded , the corner of this behemoth bar bounced right off me .

I was given a bar of lemon. Its like half a brick! Im going to get one of those morrocan scrub gloves and leave the soap in place. Think it would crack the shower tray!

Lexy2345 · 13/06/2026 12:39

I wouldn’t share a bar of soap with anyone.

wot ?

Blueeucalyptus · 13/06/2026 14:15

YABU for being suggesting it’s low rent somehow - Imperial Leather smells amazing, even though it’s cheap. All the petite Marseille soaps that we are loving are also cheap…we just think they’re exotic because they’re French 😂

YANBU for wanting a luxey soap, but I do think your money is essentially being washed down the drain! Personally I’d much rather a Jo Malone perfume or whatever

@RubySparrow I just googled the bottle top tip and it came up with an old MN thread. It's genius.

I remember that campaign. That's some highly effective marketing if all these years later your DH thinks that Imperial Leather is classy soap!

Whereas op wanting expensive soap because of the illusion of status isn’t down to marketing at all.

It’s only ‘classy’ if you value the aesthetic. It’s just something to wash wish at the end of the day.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 13/06/2026 14:19

Gosh, this thread has been an eye opener for sure!
I stopped using soap many many years ago, never realised that it was much better for your skin than gels/wash.
I also didn't like the 'scum' around your jewellery and the sink/bath.
How do you all deal with the scum?
Must admit have just been looking up Chanel No 5 soaps and I am very very tempted...

Do people use bar soap

Of course they do, and they are cleaner and fresher for it, and it's much better for the environment that plastic bottles of shower gel and aerosols of foam. Shower gels are shit.

AImportantMermaid · 13/06/2026 14:21

I use the stuff they use in Turkish hamams - Dalan olive oil soap. It’s about £6 for 5 bars on Amazon and I hang a bar in the shower in an exfoliating soap bag like one of these:

I am as clean as a whistle. Not a bacteria on me.

I think the shift to liquid soap came when our kids were small. So much easier to squirt a bit of liquid soap on small hands. Using a bar of soap made more mess with clumsy toddler hands. We refill the hand soap containers so not strictly single use plastic - but I accept that a bar of soap has no plastic at all.

Wonderlandpeony · 13/06/2026 14:23

Imperial leather is banned in Europe due to it containing an ingredient that causes a severe allergic reaction. For some reason it isn't banned in the UK, which is strange really.

MrMucker · 13/06/2026 14:23

I'm thinking people who use pump action hand wash stuff are missing something.
Firstly pump action results in waste as you have to dispense a minimum amount for the pump to even work.
Secondly the packaging requires 2 separate disposal processes for the bottle and the pump, if they are to head anywhere close to recycling. Which they probably don't anyway.
Thirdly the notion of refill packs cutting down in plastics is deluded. The actual difference in amount of plastic is marginal, visit a shelf a s do the maths against what's in front if you.
Fourthly these products are intrinsically harsher on your skin due to all the agents required to maintain liquid form.
Fifthly--every single piece of plastic that was ever produced still exists. If you insist on pump action hand wash, you are insisting on contributing to a rapidly growing catastrophe. You are part of the problem. And you don't care. Buy these products, and you are signposting yourself as thoughtless.

But hey, you do you.

Exactly. Gel means a plastic bottle has to be recycled / might end up in landfill or the ocean; a soap bar, if you buy the right ones, will have a paper wrap or nothing at all.

Allseeingallknowing · 13/06/2026 14:24

I love the perfumed soap often seen at garden centres, expensive but lasts a long time.
