DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

If anyone used the same soap as me id be disgusted. I've got a tropics one and everyone else uses shower gel. Why don't you just get what you want and use different soap.

Why? Just run it under the warm tap for a moment and any trace of the previous user will wash off and down the plug hole. That's if it hasn't already done so when they rinsed it themselves. I take it you only share a bathroom with immediate family members / a partner / your children, who hopefully shouldn't disgust you anyway?

Gosh, this thread has been an eye opener for sure!
I stopped using soap many many years ago, never realised that it was much better for your skin than gels/wash.
I also didn't like the 'scum' around your jewellery and the sink/bath.
How do you all deal with the scum?
Must admit have just been looking up Chanel No 5 soaps and I am very very tempted...

This is exactly where I’m at. The soap scum in hard water areas is terrible!
I’m interested to hear that soap is so much more effective in armpits. At the risk of sounding like Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, I’m not really a profuse sweater. So I’ve never noticed that my trusty shower gel doesn’t protect against BO.

ThreeStripeQueen · 13/06/2026 14:26

I love soap. Pears is my favourite for hands but I use TKMaxx or Nesti Dante in the shower. DH uses whatever soap I buy or Lynx shower gel if it runs out 😒

I think the shift to liquid soap came when our kids were small. So much easier to squirt a bit of liquid soap on small hands. Using a bar of soap made more mess with clumsy toddler hands. We refill the hand soap containers so not strictly single use plastic - but I accept that a bar of soap has no plastic at all.

The 'liquid soap' is detergent and harsh, and needs to be rinsed away thoroughly.
It makes my hands crack.

There's no way I would use it on a child.

I don't have sensitive skin.

£200 per kilo. Grin

For that price, I’d want it to apply itself, rinse me off, towel me dry, and fix me a stonking great gin and tonic afterwards.

hotchocinsummer · 13/06/2026 14:29

God I LOVE soap! Waitrose do a lovely geranium one (I prob smell like a grandma)
I buy net bags from Amazon for my soaps, perfect!
best one I ever had was rituals, the entire house smelt amazing
you have your soap, let him have his

ToadRage · 13/06/2026 14:31

There is nothing wrong with imperial leather. It's what my husband uses. I wouldn't say it's luxury but it smells nice and does the job, why spend a fortune on soap?

What on earth would they be doing with it that would disgust you?

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 13/06/2026 14:34

This made me think it must be chicken flavour:
Husband loves IL but we won't buy it as the cat goes mad licking the bath after his shower. Doesn't happen with any other soap

But then came this:
I’ll never even consider giving DH a BJ unless he’s used imperial leather on his nethers

😂😂😂

queenMab99 · 13/06/2026 14:34

Ugh! Imperial leather smells like old men.

SqueakyDinosaur · 13/06/2026 14:35

Chateau du Savon do excellent Marseille soaps quite reasonably - I just tend to order a mixed dozen every now and then. One of the soaps is called Fanny, and I'm childish enough to be amused by that, but there's also a black one called Pavot, which used to be called Opium as it's a poppyseed one, and that one is absolutely delicious.

Can't bear shower gels, they make me feel slimy. I grew up in and have most lived in hard water areas so that's what I'm used to and therefore prefer.

What’s with all the hate for bar soap?! It’s much better for the environment than handwash in plastic bottles and it lasts longer. We are a Pears household, DF loved a bit of IL though…

I prefer liquid handwash, Bio s unfragranced easy to use and buy in 5 litres, lasts ages, just cat and I

My cat self-cleans. Is she doing it wrong?

What a lot of bollys for a bar of soap - most likely made in same factory as a dozen cheaper varieties.
Still each to their own🙄

dementedpixie · 13/06/2026 14:41

Theres a white version of imperial leather - gentle care

Dd bought me the wee soap selection from here last Christmas and they were all very nice.

Bar soap? That everyone uses? Ugh

I thought that too!!

FastFood · 13/06/2026 14:44

Only on MN can soap be considered dirty

Slightyamusedandsilly · 13/06/2026 14:44

Neither is right. IL isn't classy but neither is JM.

DierdreDaphne · 13/06/2026 14:44

HoskinsChoice · 13/06/2026 12:44

You're both unreasonable. Who uses bars of soap in the 21st century!?! Makes me feel a bit nauseous. 🤢

My MiL. She used to bring here special bar of a particularly minging one (dove?) and wanted to leave it here to 'save luggage'.

MiL you are very welcome to use our shower gel.

Canle1905 · 13/06/2026 14:47

I think there has been a resurgence in soap making. I am a soap fan and love finding different fragrances from small businesses in Scotland. If I buy too many I put them in drawers with my clothes.

FastFood · 13/06/2026 14:48

Do you realise that you breathe the same air as everyone else? That this cute little atom of carbon has already been into other lungs, nostrils, poo, dead dinosaur and what not? Actually, it's been around for minimum 13 billion years.

TheFarriersDaughter · 13/06/2026 14:49

Dove is not soap, btw.

Nasty stuff.
