DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

anotherdaytosmile · 13/06/2026 12:27

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

Team DH, it smells nostalgic.

I assumed that everybody had left their soap bars in the 80s and now used shower gel. And yet everyone here is behaving as if bars of soap are normal, not retro. Mind blown.

Edited

Dh and I use soap in the shower (a different one each) but the kids use shower gel. Soap lasts much longer than shower gel. We have handwash for washing hands at the sink

ScotiaLass · 13/06/2026 13:51

To make Imperial Leather really classy he needs to get one of those magnetic holders to attach it to. A lady in my street growing up had that and she was our resident Hyacinth Bucket. I always thought it was metal in the paper sticker that made the bar attach to the magnet, but I've just discovered via google that she probably pushed a magnet into the centre of the bar.

We have a mix of hand wash and bar soap on our basins , currently using L’Occitane cherry blossom , which is lovely . Of the soap available in supermarkets imperial leather is one of the better ones .

What about Pears?

FatRosie · 13/06/2026 13:55

@BigAnne , you can still get Lux.
@Inthezone5578 , the low bar MNers have for men never ceases to amaze me. LTB.

Omg! Never knew huge soap could be such a hazard!

In the wrong hands , yes ! Blush
I am judging my own paws as unsuitable .

dementedpixie · 13/06/2026 13:59

I like this version of pears soap

They do make little soaps too, I've often bought them as stocking fillers. Agree the bath soaps are too dangerous to take into the shower!

I bought some of the small bars for my mum, she never wore perfume but liked rose or lavender scents .
Also the type of person who put nice soap in a drawer "to make the clothes smell nice "

Plinketyplonks · 13/06/2026 14:01

Imperial Leather soap makes me think of my dear departed dad. He always used it and was a frugal man so towards the end there would be a sliver of soap still with that central label attached. The smell makes me think of him.

Puddlewoman · 13/06/2026 14:01

soap is self cleaning, I thought that was the point of it. But I use in on a sponge to wash so not an issue I use pears regularly but do treat myself to penhaligons once in a while.
You don't get properly clean with shower gel

Bars of soap are normal. Granted not everyone uses them but they’re definitely not retro. A lot of people find they make them cleaner than shower gel (sweat less after use).
What about in the bath?It wouldn’t really occur to me to use shower gel rather than soap in the bath.

diddl · 13/06/2026 14:03

So if you've never thought to buy separate soaps Op, des whoever shops buy what they want & the other just puts up with it?

Piglet89 · 13/06/2026 14:03

I haven’t had any soap in the house since about 1999.

SoapCollector · 13/06/2026 14:03

I do love a chat about soap! So I'll be back later to read all the thread. 😁

The smell of Imperial leather is so nostalgic and clean, I remember thinking it was very posh soap in the 1970's/80's.

Imperial Leather is all right, but if you really want the good stuff, it's Shield

Wow! Just the name 'Shield' sent me back to a school trip in Devon where I was thoroughly miserable.. I did see fireflies tho..

That's what I have! I have the normal one on my wee bath soap holder and that on my sink soap holder.

I love it.

I do also buy palmolive and in my kitchen I have liquid soap.

Thatcannotberight · 13/06/2026 14:04

Imperial Leather smells vaguely like BO. Not surprised somebody's cat liked it.

My Dad liked IL for the same reason and later the blue Pears .
My Parents were born in the 30s , I remember my Mum hating the original Pears when we were kids ( so we were never bought it) , even though I wanted to win the Miss Pears contest which DSis said I wouldn't anyway because I had Ugly Freckles ! "
The indentation was to smoosh the rest of the old bar into when you got a new one ( apparently )

Shedmistress · 13/06/2026 13:33

Stop finger wagging.

Finger wagging is the very essence and point of Mumsnet.

Are you very new here? 😂

Whosthetabbynow · 13/06/2026 14:07

gamerchick · 13/06/2026 12:31

Why can't you have both?

Husband loves IL but we won't buy it as the cat goes mad licking the bath after his shower. Doesn't happen with any other soap.

Does your cat have a shower?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/06/2026 13:35

Cussons Pearl?

I think it is, that's definitely what we used. It came in pink and white almost shaped like a shell. Lush.

I changed to soap on back of a thread on here, maybe ten years ago?

Soap has been am absolute godsend for my smelly teen after finally convincing him to change. The teenage honk has well and truly gone.

We each have our own, a mixture of TK Maxx, Neste Dante, Kew Gardens and various other handmade or luxury brands. Better for the environment and more economical as it lasts so long.

Differentforgirls · 13/06/2026 14:07

What about Zest?

NetZeroZealot · 13/06/2026 14:08

That stuff makes me itch in embarrassing places.
looks nice in the soap dish though

Clarabell77 · 13/06/2026 14:08

HoskinsChoice · 13/06/2026 12:44

You're both unreasonable. Who uses bars of soap in the 21st century!?! Makes me feel a bit nauseous. 🤢

Loads of people. I prefer it for showering, but I do use my own bar. It’s better for the environment than the plastic shower gel and hand soap containers.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 13/06/2026 14:09

Think.of it this way, do you want to waste JM soap on him? Let the man have his soap, and (to strike a note of maudlinity(if thats a word) when he's shuffled off this planet, you'll get a whiff of IL and remember him.
