DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

YABBU! Bar soap is so dated and messy. Choose a nice liquid soap…I love shopping in TK Maxx for some of the gorgeous smelling Pecksniffs or Vivian Gray …so much more nicely scented and unisex !

Nooo, liquid soap is so dated and bad for the environment! 😜

Please be careful how you vote. I’m going to use this as evidence to ban the stuff from the house

As someone who has Imperial Leather soap currently sat on a soap dish in the bathroom, AND an emergency roll of Izal in the bathroom cupboard I'm siding with your husband.

Sorry.

I bought some of the small bars for my mum, she never wore perfume but liked rose or lavender scents .
Also the type of person who put nice soap in a drawer "to make the clothes smell nice "

We keep ours in the airing cupboard with towels and sheets until it goes into the bathroom. It does smell nice.

You have a very clean cat?

Of course, he washes without soap!

Mylastusernamewasbetter · 13/06/2026 15:03

@anotherdaytosmile democracy is wrong. IL can have no place in a civilised bathroom. Agree with pps toujours savon marseilles!

Just me and him in the bath. Are we mingers?

No, of course you aren't mingers. And as for the PP thinking that soap has to be individual, it is soap FGS. Clearly @Marycontrarygarden doesn't understand the basic premise of soap.

MrsShawnHatosy · 13/06/2026 15:07

Here’s a nice classy soap

Somehow we seem to have acquired some bottles of body wash (nothing to do with me!), and I've been trying to use them up in the bath simply to get rid of them. But it's much more of a faff than using bar soap, plus you end up with loads of bubbles in the bath which take forever to rinse away. Fortunately I'm nearing the end of the last bottle!

Gosh, this thread has been an eye opener for sure!
I stopped using soap many many years ago, never realised that it was much better for your skin than gels/wash.
I also didn't like the 'scum' around your jewellery and the sink/bath.
How do you all deal with the scum?
Must admit have just been looking up Chanel No 5 soaps and I am very very tempted...

Water softener! No scum, no limescale, no Viakal. We've had ours 30 years and it moved house with us.

Sorry.

Why do you have the Izal is there a genuine use for it like a noro outbreak or is it just the loo roll that noone will use

TerfOnATrain · 13/06/2026 15:15

DH loves Imperial Leather, I prefer Wrights Cold Tar soap or Dettol soap, both of which are not far from carbolic soap. Soap is really far superior to shower gel, it really does kill bacteria and is environmentally more sound.

We have some lovely gifted Rituals shower foam in our bathroom but I only use it for showering the smelly Labrador.

MrsShawnHatosy · 13/06/2026 15:17

Neither soap nor gels/washes are inherently better for your skin, it depends what your skin type is.

Hmmm. You should really only use stuff on the dog that’s specially formulated for them. Would you wash yourself with dog shampoo?

Chocolatefreak · 13/06/2026 15:21

Shower gels, body wash etc all come in plastic bottles. Far better environmentally and cheaper to buy unwrapped bar soap. If you have a predisposition to sensitive skin you can get soap free bar wash.

Bar soap is superior in many ways as well as better for the environment. I think that it is liquid soaps and shower gels that are dated. We have long been brainwashed (pardon the phrase) to believe that detergent-based products are somehow superior; bar soap is generally both better and cheaper.

Laura95167 · 13/06/2026 15:23

I buy French shea butter soap DH can use what he likes

maddiemookins16mum · 13/06/2026 15:23

This is my current favourite ‘soap’, it smells fabulous, so much so I bought 8 bars the other week.

Liquid soap DESTROYS my skin. Bar soap all the way

Dliplop · 13/06/2026 15:34

Unless I was allergic or revolted, DH is welcome to buy himself any soap he wants. He doesn’t, so I buy some affordable plainish bars for everyday and treat myself to a slab of a lush one or fancy craft
fair one a few times a year

Elsvieta · 13/06/2026 15:34

Dove all the way. Although I'd love to know where Imperial Leather got its name.

TheWineoftheChicken · 13/06/2026 15:39

Do people use bar soap

Why would it be sold in shops if no one used it? 😕

Waitingfordoggo · 13/06/2026 15:40

HoskinsChoice · 13/06/2026 12:44

You're both unreasonable. Who uses bars of soap in the 21st century!?! Makes me feel a bit nauseous. 🤢

Bar soap is better for the planet as no plastic packaging. I also find it doesn’t dry my skin as much as handwash and shower gel.

Dragonscaledaisy · 13/06/2026 15:44

Marycontrarygarden · 13/06/2026 12:35

Bar soap? That everyone uses? Ugh

Doesn't everyone have their own bathroom in your house?
