What's hated on MN, but insanely popular in real life?

Disney World
Starbucks, Costa, Nero etc
Center Parcs
A sensible political stance
McDonald's

What else?

Fabric softener

notanoccultexpert · 12/06/2026 13:43

vaping - the last thread I saw about vaping was insane, people acting so hyperbolic about it, and yet it's helped many, many people stop smoking.

hopelessbusiness · 12/06/2026 13:44

Not sure if sunshine has been mentioned but a lot of MNetters appear to prefer bloody snuggling under a blanket with a fucking hot chocolate when it's cold and rainy and are quick to complain about the unbearable heat when the thermometer reaches 19°.
Whereas most people in real life enjoy summer dresses, days on the beach, lazy drinks in pub gardens and everything else that happens when the sun finally appears!
Don't get me started on puddle suits either

JLou08 · 12/06/2026 13:45

Fabric softener
All inclusive holidays.

Not so much liked but things tolerated in real life but divorce/cut out of life worthy on MN.
Swearing
Raised voices
People having anxiety/depression and being 'rude' (not happy and sociable) on the odd occasion.

London - and the south east.

I was going to suggest Surrey.

Fascinators and/or hats at weddings.

Fortunately I take no notice.

Video Games.

According to MN it's a thing immature men do and something to be stamped out. Where as in reality, around 41% of game consoles are owned by a woman. And in several markets woman out number men significantly.

yeah this is one of my main hobbies and second youtube channel.
I also use fabric softener on every single wash I do, even towels! Hasn't killed any washing machine I've used yet.

Most people I know aren't obsessed with 0.1% of the population. They also believe that "a measure of a civilised society is how the majority treats the minorities". Quite simple really.

Whilst I've never had a discussion with any of my friends about trans issues (it's just not on our radar) it is a very real topic out in the world. Investment in Pride is down this year again, with Trans being one of the main reasons. Pride had good backing until trans obfuscated the topic. Being fine with other people doing what they want is one thing, but ignoring biological facts and asking 45 year old bald blokes if they might be pregnant riles up most normal people.
So whilst the real world isn't obsessed with Trans issues, the issues are definitely having big knock on effects.

Tattoos, food like chicken nuggets, fake tan, carveries, kids on screens… also everyone either seems to a very high earner or grindingly poor.

Most people I know don't want blokes in a dress being able to use the same bathrooms as their daughter.

You are one of the obsessed types I referred to. I didn't know we still had public bathrooms btw.

Fizzybluewater · 12/06/2026 13:55

Take McDonald's as an example. If you believed what you read on here it should be deserted most of the time because it's terribly bad and the only people you will see in there have 17 feral children but only one tooth.

Brilliant @MrsAvocet, spluttered my mouthful of tea over my keyboard at that 👏😂

DilemmaDelilah · 12/06/2026 13:57

Junk food and unhealthy snacks. Apparently a majority of MN posters are eating kale chips, Greek yoghurt and brown rice because they are delicious and wouldn't consider eating a pringle or a lump of bog-standard ordinary cheddar, let alone a McDonald's or some KFC.

In reality, although a lot of us may eat kale chips, Greek yoghurt and brown rice very few of us would eat them because they are delicious, and very few of us wouldn't secretly prefer to be munching on a handful of pringles.

Really? I appreciate it might be the sort of hobby people don’t talk about but I’ve never known a woman mention gaming ever. Not a single woman my entire life.

So I do get this with distant friends or acquaintances, but I would definitely drop in unannounced on my family, very close friends and even in-laws if I was passing by. If they were busy or obviously about to leave etc I’d not stay though. And I’d be really happy for them to do the same with me!

What if, eg, it was an aunty and uncle who had just got someone to watch their children and were happily about to DTD, then you pop in?
