What's hated on MN, but insanely popular in real life?

Disney World
Starbucks, Costa, Nero etc
Center Parcs
A sensible political stance
McDonald's

What else?

@TheKeatingFive , TKMaxx often has nice ones at sensible prices but read the ingredients list.

I recommend Grapefruit & Orange Natural Hand Wash | Faith In Nature. It's a good brand and sold in H&B and Boots, I think. I have the body lotion (and use it on my face sometimes).

I love that particular scent from Faith in Nature, but for some reason all of the places where it’s stocked locally seem to have it far less often than the much less nice lavender and the coconut (which I hate).

As you well know a bathroom is also another word for a toilet.

So let me ask do you support trans people or not?

Old lady question. What on earth is the connection between the erroneous use of the word bathroom to refer to a room with a loo and a sink and trans people? I'm sure it's there somewhere if I cared to look!

Pedantry the last bastion of those stuck for an intelligent response😶

I dread to think of what the insertion of an emoji at the end of a load of bollocks is the last bastion. Only the seriously unintelligent sneer at the correct use of English, maybe because it's beyond their limited ability.

Snacking. Particularly in the cinema. Or eating on a plane. You should be able to go a few hours without eating! Yes I probably can, but I like food

Why does cinema food stink, nachos, popcorn etc? I get amazed at the amount of food people seem to take into cinemas, it would feed a MN family for a month, a pleasant change from that chicken.

KittenHeelz · 15/06/2026 22:11

Same here although I don’t have an en suite but only because we couldn’t get planning permission.
I am now rethinking my ( infrequent) kitchen roll use. I didn’t know you can’t recycle it 🤷🏻‍♀️

In-laws…. Especially MILs

But only her in-laws, his in-laws are generally to be worshipped and glorified, especially his wonderful MIL, LTB if he evens thinks critical thoughts of her.

My DM uses kitchen roll despite me telling her not to do so. I use reusable eco cloths that you put in washing machine to clean.

I'm sure she's thrilled to be told off by the santimonious child to whom she gave birth. I hope she takes the opportunity to use a lot more.

Bleach. You usually get accused on here of being an environmental hazard if you admit to using bleach.

I've seen threads on bleach go both ways. There's plenty of people on MN who bleach their toilets after every poo. And a few who still disinfect their food shopping before putting it away.

BleedinglyObvious · 16/06/2026 15:04

@KittenHeelz I am now rethinking my ( infrequent) kitchen roll use. I didn’t know you can’t recycle it You can compost it if it's made from only paper. If you've used it then it's not recyclable.

Friends who won’t be there for you at 3am, which is the fundamental test of the worth of any friendship on MN.

Whilst at the same time never turning up at your house without four weeks advance notice. Any friend who makes any sort of demand on the classic MN - ers time, even so much as an unplanned phone call is just too, too needy and selfish but the minute Mrs MN needs a shoulder to cry on, they've got to be willing to drop everything or they're a selfish, heartless bitch.

I imagine it's neither too hard left nor too hard right

But literally in the wild 80% of people middle lane or even worse outside lane hog. All blaming the person in front of them, who is stuck behind the person in front of them etc.

No, they really don't. They are in the middle lane for good reasons.

The inside lanes has lorries/slower moving vehicles in it
The inside lane becomes a slip road
The inside lane IS a slip road and someone is joining
There's a sign saying there's a report of an obstruction (which goes on for miles and nobody ever tells you if there was an obstruction or what it was)

You do get people who sit in the middle lane for miles but it's more like 1% not 80%.

I have no idea what the hysteria about middle lane sitting is all about. Lorries overtaking each other is far worse. But in either case, the outside/4th lane is available. But people seem too scared to use it.

But anyway it's not an MN thing, that's a general social media thing. People obsess about it instead of looking at their own appalling driving.

igelkott2026 · 16/06/2026 16:35

Can't remember if it's already been mentioned now but sticking with normal bra sizes rather than the weird "vanity" sizing which wants everyone to think they are stick thin with enormous boobs.

Generally we have vanity sizing for clothes (back in the 1980s I'd have been a size 12 and now I'm an 8) but for bras I am apparently something like a 26K.

Ignoring that comment! It was a suggestion and she prides herself on trying to be eco friendly.

I don’t think you understand my post. I’m all for going to A & E when you need to . I was saying many Mumsnetters think you should avoid A & E at all costs, and nothing is ever a big enough reason to seek help. Of course you should go if you have a finger half hanging off!! I get fed up with keyboard warriors with no medical knowledge telling other people they are wasting NHS time. They should keep their beaks out!!

Ah noted then. Thanks

I've never really noticed this. The buckets of popcorn they sell are huge though! I take my own food & drink

I think you get a lot of polarised views on here whereas most people in real life are more moderate. Plus there's always tendency in some quarters not to like to be associated with popular things because popular = "common".
Take McDonald's as an example. If you believed what you read on here it should be deserted most of the time because it's terribly bad and the only people you will see in there have 17 feral children but only one tooth. Strange how they manage to stay in business really as so few people admit to buying food there! And there'll be even more criticism of anyone who has ever let their child eat a happy meal, with a picture being drawn of pasty, obese children who have never seen a fresh vegetable in their lives, unlike the critics' children who live on quinoa and kale and wouldn't even recognise the McDonald's logo.
Of course those stereotypes do exist, but not in the numbers you'd think from posts on here. There are plenty of people who eat a wide range of things but get a McDonald's or similar once in a while when they're in a hurry, out late or travelling etc. Is it a particularly healthy choice? Should you buy it every day? No of course not. But once in a while it's not going to kill you and it is often quick and convenient. But it has become demonised so nobody likes to admit that they went through the drive through on the way home from a late activity or work once or twice last month which is probably a much more common scenario than either "wouldn't even know what it is" or "practically lives on the stuff".

This!
Apparently nobody on MN ever goes to McDonalds or has ever eaten a burger! 😂
Some others I’ve seen recently;

Roast dinners are apparently only eaten by the elderly, not quite sure how people think Toby Carvery stay in business or why many pubs and restaurants have exclusive roast menus on a Sunday! 🤔 😂

If you think that pockets on dresses alters the way they sit then there must be something wrong with you. Everyone on MN only buys dresses with pockets with massive pockets.

Generally people having a different opinion and being adult enough to disagree doesn’t seem to be a thing on MN.

All the people who were amazed to learn that people use soap the other day, despite the existence of large quantities of soap in every supermarket and chemist shop 😭

Dogs

Even worse, off-lead dogs.

After reading umpteen threads on here about evil off-lead dogs, I call mine back from e.g. groups of ramblers. But now and again I take my eye off them on some apparently empty and usually unpopulated footpath - poo picking, whatever - and when I look up, they're homing in on some walkers who are all full-on, 'Oooh, aren't you gorgeous! Yes, hello! Oh, Sue, look at this one, she's sniffing my pocket, no darling, I don't have any treats, I'm so sorry!' I approach apologising and the response is, 'Don't worry! They're so friendly! What beautiful dogs!'

I think the worst I've had in the past few years was a man eating a sandwich on a bench. One of the dogs trotted up and gazed at him imploringly, and he ignored both her and then me when I said, 'Sorry, she's a shocker' and hustled her away.

You think everyone loves your dog IRL
because those people come up to you and say positive comments. There is a bias there. People who don’t like dogs will keep a wide berth and not approach you or say anything. It doesn’t mean that dog-dislike is confined to MN. People are just more honest with their feelings here.

Why did you let your dog go up to someone eating their food? That man was probably sick of being approached by dogs with irresponsible owners. Though to your credit, you didn’t say, ‘oh she’s just being friendly’. Now, that’s the mantra of bad dog owners everywhere!

Yep.

I don't know many toddlers, but of the ones I have met, none have said that their favorite food is lettuce with hummus.

I've only ever seen that on mumsnet.
