What's hated on MN, but insanely popular in real life?

Disney World
Starbucks, Costa, Nero etc
Center Parcs
A sensible political stance
McDonald's

What else?

@SilverSilk I don't mind wee to moderate sized dogs.
What I do mind was being faced with an XL bully dog sat on the bus seat Infront of me and being called an arsehole for moving.

SaltySpitoon · 17/06/2026 08:54

Men
Dogs
Tattoos
Convenience/fast food
Having children before you're married
Not getting married at all
Not owning your own home
Not driving

Massively disagree.

Seriously? You think MN is liberal? It makes the Daily Mail look far left!

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 17/06/2026 09:55

I agree that there’s been a lot of far-right posters on here lately. On a few threads they were all whipping each other up into a frenzy of anti-immigrant hatred.

You haven't noticed MN is absurdly liberal, if you haven't I suspect you are probably one of them!

I'd say the opposite. It's not a very liberal minded place at all in political terms

It's not a very liberal-minded place in general terms. I've not seen such conservative attitudes about things like tattoos, what other people wear, etc, in real life for a long time.

The level of snobbery on here is something I thought no longer existed. Somebody actually used the term, 'non-u' in context to mean 'not of the upper-classes'. I only even recognise the expression from reading class-conscious novels written in the 1930s.

I bet there's people here who still own and use fish knives in the mistaken belief it's what the gentry use.

”U” and “Non-U” are terms I associate with just one person - Nancy Mitford. Does this poster still insist on calling mirrors “looking glasses”?

It was a while ago, and I wish I'd thought to ask. Oddly, I didn't even question it. I think I was just too surprised at seeing it used this century by somebody who didn't appear to be a centenarian. Perhaps it is still widely used among people who are actually 'u'. It's not as though I'd know 😂

You think everyone loves your dog IRL
because those people come up to you and say positive comments. There is a bias there. People who don’t like dogs will keep a wide berth and not approach you or say anything. It doesn’t mean that dog-dislike is confined to MN. People are just more honest with their feelings here.

Why did you let your dog go up to someone eating their food? That man was probably sick of being approached by dogs with irresponsible owners. Though to your credit, you didn’t say, ‘oh she’s just being friendly’. Now, that’s the mantra of bad dog owners everywhere!

Why did you let your dog go up to someone eating their food?
Because the bench was right by a public footpath where dogs are allowed to be off-lead, and I hadn't clocked that he was eating.

I'm not a dickhead. I keep my dogs away from picnics, and football matches, and livestock (even though they are stock-trained) but I let them off where it's safe to do so.

BleedinglyObvious · 17/06/2026 11:28

@igelkott2026 , Motorway driving – how to use motorways | The AA
Highway code
Rule 264
Keep in the left lane unless overtaking.

If you are overtaking, you should return to the left lane when it is safe to do so (see also Rules 267 and 268).

Treefou · 17/06/2026 11:37

I don’t go to McDonalds because I don’t like greasy food. Lots of people obviously love greasy food. I don’t like tattoos either - they all look cheap to me. I’ve also been sexually assaulted multiple times so I don’t want to share single sex spaces with blokes in dresses.

Does that make me right wing? If so I’ll have to live with my right-wingdness. Although I’ve voted Labour for decades now. Having said that I won’t if Burnham gets in because he seems to be a fiscally illiterate idiot...

The Mumsnet poster will also despise any notion of leaving their DC unattended, will deprive themselves of a shower for the first 3 years of the child's life and will forgo any social event i.e their best friend's hen, their sister's wedding et all as the child's own father or grandparents simply cannot be trusted with their care. In real life, every mum I know jumps at a chance for a night off!

I never understood the difficulty in having a shower. I never took DT’s into the bathroom or toilet with me - they went in their cots or the playpen. Sometimes they cried but we all survived!

I've never understood this either. I put mine either in their cot, or brought them into the bathroom with me in a baby bouncer. Yes, they cried. But then I got out of the shower and gave them a cuddle and they stopped. It was not a big deal.

Once I came out of the shower to find baby DD had fallen asleep in her cot waiting for me. That was a result!

Yep.

I don't know many toddlers, but of the ones I have met, none have said that their favorite food is lettuce with hummus.

I've only ever seen that on mumsnet.

Exactly!
I mean my DC eat salad now as adults but there’s no way they’d have got excited over a lettuce leaf as kids! Weekend salad bar treat doesn’t quite have the same appeal as McDonalds!

Even worse, off-lead dogs.

After reading umpteen threads on here about evil off-lead dogs, I call mine back from e.g. groups of ramblers. But now and again I take my eye off them on some apparently empty and usually unpopulated footpath - poo picking, whatever - and when I look up, they're homing in on some walkers who are all full-on, 'Oooh, aren't you gorgeous! Yes, hello! Oh, Sue, look at this one, she's sniffing my pocket, no darling, I don't have any treats, I'm so sorry!' I approach apologising and the response is, 'Don't worry! They're so friendly! What beautiful dogs!'

I think the worst I've had in the past few years was a man eating a sandwich on a bench. One of the dogs trotted up and gazed at him imploringly, and he ignored both her and then me when I said, 'Sorry, she's a shocker' and hustled her away.

You are supposed to be in control of your dog when you take it into a public place. How can you be in control of the dog when you don't even know where it is?

I knew where they were: just up the path. I could see them if I glanced up.

They don't chase wildlife (with the possible exception of a squirrel materialising underfoot), they don't hassle livestock and if I call then, they come. They are under control.

The inside lanes has lorries/slower moving vehicles in it
The inside lane becomes a slip road
The inside lane IS a slip road and someone is joining

Oh dear, oh dear.

What are you saying? That if I am on the motorway I am not allowed to overtake lorries or other slow moving vehicles?

Or that I have to stay in the inside lane when it become a slip road to leave the motorway even though I don't want to?

Or that I can't move over to let someone onto the motorway and have to let them crash into me?

All because someone wants to do 90 mph in the middle lane?

To coin a phrase oh dear oh dear. Some people really need refresher driving lessons.

Same here.

My mum now has a cat which behaves like this and goes and cries outside the bathroom if she goes in for a shower!

@igelkott2026 , You seem to be struggling with comprehension.

I'm not saying that at all.

Or that.

What I posted was cut'n'pasted from the gov.uk website's section about the Highway Code. They are not my words.
