What's hated on MN, but insanely popular in real life?

Disney World
Starbucks, Costa, Nero etc
Center Parcs
A sensible political stance
McDonald's

What else?

All supermarket bread unless its sourdough. Especially Kingsmill 😂. It has to be home made bread. Everyone seems to bake their own bread.

I make my own or have sourdough because ones like Kingsmill or Warburtons give me really bad acid reflux. Otherwise I really wouldn’t mind the bog standard sliced loaf.

People who are intimidated by an England flag.

Oh god, yes!

People who ask 'is this flag racist?'

Er - apart from perhaps the Nazi swastika, it's not possible for a flag to be racist. The motives for putting it up in a particular place at a particular time might just be, but the MN knee-jerk of hating English or Union flags is tiresome.

I'm sure they all love the pretty tricolor flags all over French towns and cities! But that's different, of course.

Sure, there are some malevolent people around just now - but we shouldn't give in to them. Don't let them claim these flags.

I'm middle class and I absolutely adore Cafe Nero

Another vote for Nero. Head and shoulders above Costa and the horrible Starbucks - oh, and many independents too, I'm afraid to say.

I think their coffee is excellent and so do several of my coffee connoisseur friends!

BunnyLake · 12/06/2026 13:03

@Heronwatcher I honestly would not turn up at someone’s house without a text first. Unless I need them to call emergency services or something I just wouldn’t do it.

Gender neutral toilets and changing areas.

You’re saying people love them in real life? Maybe if you’re under 30. I don’t know anyone who loves them. Some people might not loathe and detest them but I certainly don’t know anyone who loves them.

So most people you know like to pretend men can become women?

Most people I know aren't obsessed with 0.1% of the population. They also believe that "a measure of a civilised society is how the majority treats the minorities". Quite simple really.

TheJuicyLucy · 12/06/2026 13:06

Mangelwurzelfortea · 12/06/2026 12:32

It's always people on the right who do this too. There are as many left-leaning people as right-leaning, but it's only the ones on the right who feel attacked for their views, despite them apparently being the 'sensible' views that everyone secretly shares. I wonder why.

I think it's because (broadly speaking) the Left are more motivated by hope and the Right are more motivated by fear.

Most people I know don't want blokes in a dress being able to use the same bathrooms as their daughter.

Hyphenated first names like Lily-Mae and Evie-Rose. MN hates them but there's zillions where I live.

You haven't noticed MN is absurdly liberal, if you haven't I suspect you are probably one of them!

It's not absurdly liberal 😂

Ugh. I don't know anyone who does.
Drag queen's are the scum of the earth. Can't bear them and don't know anyone who does.

Why are they the scum of the earth? They're not my cup of tea but "scum of the earth" appears a tad harsh.

Given some of the threads over the last week parts of MN definitely aren't and I suspect you might be one one of them!

Mumsnet is crawling with Reform voters these days. If you think Reform are "absurdly liberal", your political compass is wayward indeed.

See also hen dos. Utterly awful.

All of them? How are they all chavvy and awful?

I've been to at least two which were murder mystery nights and loads of fun. Even when I was pregnant and couldn't drink anything.

Love a murder mystery night!

Certain baby names! My own name is described as 'a lovely classic' or 'boring' and 'overused'. I have met a grand total of 3 other people with my name.

'Hogging' the middle lane of the motorway is a MN crime. There are a lot of lorries in the left lane, at least at certain points along the M6...

Farming. There is a lot of misconceptions about farming, both online and in the real world. Defending it is the reason why I joined MN... to explain, and to indicate that we're not all monsters who are likely to show up on a video taken and publicised by someone who doesn't understand the hows/whys of certain things. Some of us are actually quite fond of our animals, countryside and machinery, and do the best that we can to take care of those things.

I honestly can't think of one person who thinks hogging the middle lane is anything but a pain in the ass, and I have heard plenty of drivers complaining about the car not moving out of the way.

I am not sure that's that popular in real life?
