What's hated on MN, but insanely popular in real life?

Disney World
Starbucks, Costa, Nero etc
Center Parcs
A sensible political stance
McDonald's

What else?

I think the dog thing skews both ways on MN tbh. Some people hate them more than average but if you go on the dog forum there are people who are massively the other way- like will adopt some dog that's already been rehouse 8 times and then when it turns out to still be a psycho-dog from hell, will sacrifice their entire life to its whims.

IRL, most people are somewhat in the middle. I can honestly say I'm pretty ambivalent about dogs. I wouldn't get one but I don't dislike them. I look after my friend's dog quite a lot.

Dogs are okay for the best, it's just that some owners act like complete twats and probably should have a dog anyway.
I hate the 'I love my dog so everyone else should too, types on here and irl.
"He /she's only being friendly'.
"Well I'm not, so take your dog and fuck off and if that upsets you I don't give a toss." Resorted to this a few times when owners have let their mutts jump up at me. They generally fuck off without comment.

They are popular with my working class made good family.

None of the things listed are popular with the middle class professional families where I live. They are all about holiday cottages or glamping in Cornwall, independent coffee shops, M&S food, Five Guys, etc.

Driving in the middle lane of the motorway. Mumsnetters only ever move out to overtake then move immediately back into the left hand lane always.

Yes. Like they never stay in the middle lane for a bit to get past the 10 lorries in the left lane.

Yep, there was a post further back to exactly this effect, followed by 'it's good to get that off my chest', as if it wasn't the exact same view held by all the other right-wingers on this forum. I do find it interesting that the right always feels so victimised, despite the fact that we haven't had a truly socialist government since the 1950s and have had Conservative governments for 66 years of the past 100.

It's so tedious isn't it.

Like, you're really right wing. How original and refreshing! (snore).

Drag queens! I don't know anyone in real life who doesn't love a drag act

Ugh. I don't know anyone who does.
Drag queen's are the scum of the earth. Can't bear them and don't know anyone who does.

I'm middle class and I absolutely adore Cafe Nero

Unfortunately "a sensible political stance" is becoming increasingly rare.

My All Inclusive holiday I am about to go on. Apparently Euro camps would be better 🤢

Blokes becoming women.
Uncapped benefits.
Unregulated borders
Hate of Israel.

Hope that helps

Men can't become women.
Benefits are capped.
Borders are regulated (in so far as you can regulate the sea).
Israel has killed a LOT of civilians, which does contravene international humanitarian law. It's not just 'liberals' who don't think that's great.

Hope that helps.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 12/06/2026 12:49

Baby showers.

They're hated on here but quite a lot of women IRL seem to enjoy them.

Personally l think they're chavvy and ridiculous.

See also hen dos. Utterly awful.

Non drivers
Cockapoos/Doodles etc
MILs
Blended families
Primark
Having a chat with your neighbours

All of them? How are they all chavvy and awful?

I've been to at least two which were murder mystery nights and loads of fun. Even when I was pregnant and couldn't drink anything.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 12/06/2026 12:53

Certain baby names! My own name is described as 'a lovely classic' or 'boring' and 'overused'. I have met a grand total of 3 other people with my name.

'Hogging' the middle lane of the motorway is a MN crime. There are a lot of lorries in the left lane, at least at certain points along the M6...

Farming. There is a lot of misconceptions about farming, both online and in the real world. Defending it is the reason why I joined MN... to explain, and to indicate that we're not all monsters who are likely to show up on a video taken and publicised by someone who doesn't understand the hows/whys of certain things. Some of us are actually quite fond of our animals, countryside and machinery, and do the best that we can to take care of those things.

A few days ago a rather scary dog (thankfully muzzled), one of those that looks like it body builds, growled ferociously at me. I was genuinely scared but the owner said, ‘he’s ok really, he’s a rescue dog’. Somehow that didn’t put me at ease. The next day a german shepherd several meters away barked at me very ferociously and that really scared me because if the owner let go that dog was coming straight for me and I had nowhere to hide. This is a ‘naice’ neghborhood but there are two friggin dogs out there scaring the bejesus out of me.

I've never met anyone in real life who has talked about going to Centreparcs! I think of it as VERY Mumsnet thing.

That’s a bit harsh. Lily Savage and Danny La Rue seemed ok.

I went to Madam JoJo’s once. It was really very tame.

All supermarket bread unless its sourdough. Especially Kingsmill 😂. It has to be home made bread. Everyone seems to bake their own bread.

Basically any contact with people, even friends.

On Mumsnet it’s considered to be incredibly rude/ bordering on psychotic to go to someone’s house unannounced (say if you are passing by), even close family, phone someone to speak to them, invite them to a wedding without strict social conventions being followed. Don’t even mention baby showers or a Halloween party, and social gatherings at Christmas are nothing but commercialised stealth boasts with tinsel, to add to the stress. People claim to never want to go on holiday with family and friends, can’t bear to share a table in a cafe, and the most banal of interactions on a social level is over- analysed into absolute tedium (how dare that woman who said my baby was “a good size” fat shame us both?).

And GOD FORBID the grandparents of a newborn would want to actually meet and hold them before they are 4 months old in Mumsnet-land.

Whereas in real life me and everyone I know get a lot out of friendships, mostly love our families and like a party. And my kids met everyone in the immediate family before they were a week old and WERE EVEN KISSED by their grandparents…
