Is England’s World Cup entitlement unique, or common in other countries?

Do other countries have the same sense of entitlement to winning the World Cup as we do? All this 30, now 60, years of hurt thing, all the comments about how useless England are, that's gone on for as long as I can remember, how rubbish the managers are etc.

I've never researched it but we can't be the only country to have only won one, or zero World Cups.

Is it unique to England? Or our supporters, I doubt the team has the same sense of entitlement.

@Enko but the home bit refers to the fact England were playing at home when the song first came out.

When the song came out. What's the excuse now.

It’s a cracking tune!!! It’s not THAT deep @Enko

It’s a good football song!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 11/06/2026 20:22

I don’t think there is any sense of entitlement, it is hope and disappointment. Most people in the country don’t actually expect us to win but you have to go into it with some optimism.

And yes other countries are also the same (that’s normal behaviour).

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 11/06/2026 20:23

WhenTheDustSettles · 11/06/2026 08:41

It's not so much the optimism but the stick they're given when they lose. Gareth Southgate got them further than anyone ever had in decades and the team was still derided along with Gareth himself.

It is the same if not worse in other countries

Have you not heard songs played more than once when its appropriate?

Remember Prince's song "party like its 1999" - thats always played at new years eve parties.

You are being really weird about this stupid song! Good grief, its a stupid football song and you are acting like its a criminal act to play it or something 🙄

Livpool · 11/06/2026 20:34

Isn’t it just optimism? All teams want to win the World Cup and I love football. I am rooting for England and France this year.

I grew up in Scandinavia and no that entitlement. - And I actually think thats a good word for it - is not there. There is hope and wishes and wanting the team to do great but not the "home" I find sportsmanship often lacks in the UK to me thats shown by the reputation British football fans carry abroad.

Ive always disliked the song as the idea a trophy being able to have a "home" annoys me. I recall a song done in my birth country when I was a child for a world cup where the lyric went something like "we will win and get the trophy with us home" aka they would go home with the trophy not the trophy coming home. (they didnt win but were still greeted as heros on return)

However I also fully expect to be told Im wrong and I just dont get Britishness or humour. As heavens forbid someone has a different view to the.majority. I do understand its a song. That doesn't mean I have to like it or that I think everyone thinks thst. It just means that I think its inappropriate and my view is that there is entitlement.

Inalways thoughtnthe coming home line was because the British invented football and it's had a very long cultural significance in the UK? Rather than entitlement.
And Dutch fans are definitely incredibly hopeful about winning football matches, upset and disappointed when they lose, and nostalgic about past glories and former heros. It's normal in other countries too.

In 1994 a Columbian defender was murdered a couple of days after returning from the World Cup, for scoring an own goal! Believe me OP, some countries take it far more seriously than the English!

But we invented the game, and many supports proudly view it as “our” game. That doesn’t mean we think we’re entitled to win it though.

As I said upthread, compare it to “Vindaloo”.

Or don’t, if you value your eardrums.

Well I bet none of you on this thread will remember that immortal
Scotland World Cup song We're On the March with Ally's Army. I now have that earworm in my head and am rather disturbed to find that I actually remember the words.

I did thing think the song was Three Lines on a Shirt when it first came out. My excuse for that is being Scottish.🤣

I also remember it!

I know at least two people who went to watch the film “Three Lions” expecting a football film. They did still enjoy it.

NotAnotherScarf · 11/06/2026 22:43

Brazil fell apart as a nation after losing 7-1 in their home world Cup.

Colombias goal keeper was shot because of an error

There was a war between i ink Ecuador and Peru because of a world Cup game.

Italy are devastated because they haven't made it (again)

So no other countries are as bad

By the way Messi was hated in Argentina till they won it

ReignOfError · 11/06/2026 23:04

I’m a Spurs fan. I’ve barely had hope, let alone entitlement, since the 1980s.

Anyone who thinks other countries don’t have hopes and dreams and enthusiasm about their national teams In tournaments has possibly never been to South or Central America during one.

That wasn't strictly about football though. Escobar was murdered because his O.G. cost a gambling ring millions of dollars. He was murdered because of money, not football.

Goditsmemargaret · 12/06/2026 09:15

Ah come on OP this is ridiculous. What's the point of it all if you don't dream of winning it?

Any similar age Irish people here will remember the absolute FRENZY the country got into for Italia 90 - we were all part of Jackie's Army... The country practically shut down. We got to the quarter finals and carried on like we had won 🤣🤣🤣

Is there a joke in there 😆

Just poured a bicardi and ice with coke 😋

As songs go, it was definitely one of them...

KTheGrey · 12/06/2026 12:18

What norms of other countries does the UK believe it is exempt from?

My point is that all countries and peoples are within their rights to think “home is best”. I think that that is actually a recipe for a happy life - happiness is increased by being near to family and support systems (friends and knowing a decent garage and hairdresser), and it is a kind of harmless prejudice in favour of what you know. Also pride in your place is a great driver of social integration and social effort - like a slightly bigger version of keeping a tidy house and garden.

I simply don’t believe other countries don’t have a similar attitude.

I don’t disagree that Brexit was an act of self harm, but it starts with geography - GB is an island and we act like it. When you frame Brexit as the consequence of exceptionalism I think you miss the point - it was about class and the hubris of our leadership as much as anything else.

Everywhere is exceptional - it’s the consequence of geography. And I think framing the UK’s awareness of its differences or even fondness for them as “exceptionalism” is making ordinary contentment into a focus for criticism.

Yes must be.

England want to.win, as other countries want to win. We aren't entitled to win, we'd just hope we do, as other countries also do.

Football haters rear their heads every time World Cup is on. Why not just ignore it.

It's the same every time there's a football tournament. Anyone but England mantra shows its bigotry face. This thread is just a different example of it. So much envy.
