What popular places are overrated?

coulditbeme2323 · Today 12:37

Following on from another thread, what places do you consider overrated that are popular?

Hotel Chocolat = over priced, at best average tasting, would much rather Cadbury's at a fraction of the price.

Amorino = our local one gets packed, as in queue's outside the shop packed. Over priced, very average ice cream, that they seem to be able to charge a premium for because you can mix flavors and it's a cue little flower shape.

Dominoes, Pappa Johns, Pizza Hut = unless there is a deal on very expensive for what tastes very processed pizza.

London?! Sacrilege! Greatest city on earth! (I'm not being sarcastic)

🐛 still get ds2 a Colin every birthday. He’ll be 29 in August 🤭

Never to old for Colin

StaringAtTheSky · Today 14:34

Definitely centre parks, the Lake District is just down the road from Whinfell, why stay holed up there when all that beauty is available nearby, and you can book a lodge with mountain and lake views instead

Happyjoe · Today 14:37

Had to look up Amorino, never heard of it.

Agree with Hotel choc, it used to be great but think it's changed hands a couple of times since - and it's just really plastic tasting now. Reminds me of American chocolate. Last time someone gave me some I gave it to the church mice behind my house!

For me, with the exception of one type of their toilet rolls (which are fab) it's Waitrose. The food is rubbish, goes off quick and really expensive. I used to order for delivery on the back of the loo roll but everything I bought was just blah.

And the comment of Brighton being tired. This is Brighton's long history! Some years ago they tarted up the beach but growing up there it was always delightfully tatty. I prefer it that way.

Grew up in East London but never really considered it a tourist attraction or place to visit what was you were expecting and what was it that underwhelmed you?

London is no more of a hilarious answer than Paris.

Tbf I find opinions like 'Paris is overrated' as an overrated opinion. It's almost like people go to these cities, plan their trip around doing all the major tourist landmarks, then act annoyed and surprised that they're full of long queues and didn't live up to their expectations.

When we took DC to Paris instead of wasting hours queuing to go up the Eiffel tower we spent hours picnicking in the sunshine on a patch of grass overlooking it. We got to relax and marvel at it's beauty whilst enjoy some great food from a local bakery.

You queue for hours, shuffling up hundreds up stairs shoulder to shoulder with strangers, only to stare out at a view of Paris that doesn't contain the Eiffel tower in it and you're surpised it wasn't an amazing experience?

Edited

Oh you did the Eiffel Tower all wrong! I went with my 13year old and we got there at the earliest time, maybe a 10 minute queue and then it wasn't too busy at all, especially if you walked as far up as you can. The views from it are phenomenal, staggering, absolutely worth getting up early for. But to be fair the views of the tower are pretty amazing too.

Paris in general stinks of wee and has a terrible problem with homelessness and (I presume illegal) pushy street vendors, but then it always has stunk of wee. The street vendors have got much worse I think.

I'd say Paris is defintely worth the trip if you don't go expecting some super clean, romantic escape.

Good point! Who is over rating it? What was missing that you were expecting?

Rye… sorry I couldn’t understand the hype. This is from a lover of historic places too. I’ve only met one other couple who hated Rye and the relief I felt being able to openly admit it 🤣. People were so fierce about how amazing it is

Ha ha, growing up in Sussex some years back, Rye and especially Hastings were considered dumps despite their history.

igelkott2026 · Today 14:40

The Little Mermaid. The clue is in the name - but it is really little and surrounded by disappointed tourists! I still took a photo though and deliberately ran to it when I was out for a run!

It's easy to get away from the crowds in Venice (well, it used to be, admittedly I've not been for many years). You used to only need to walk down a side street and you'd be into a world of your own with only pigeons around.

Warwick castle - crazily overpriced

Try Conwy Castle it's the pits! In fact Conwy

Hmm not sure you can fairly compare Rye with Hastings. Camber Sands is tacky.

I like Rye. It's Winchelsea which is just weird and a bit creepy.

Betty’s is good for mail order hampers etc. I haven’t been to the actual Harrogate original place since the very early 2000s and I imagine it’s just a sort of tourist trap now.

Betty's refused to honour a gift voucher that was bought over lockdown for £50 for my mum. We were unable to travel...couldn't be used online and they said tough shit.

BridgetJonesV2 · Today 14:42

I love Bicester Village Grin but then I'm from Gloucestershire and if you compare the ones in Gloucester and Tewkesbury, you'd see why.

I used to spend a fortune on Hotel Chocolat at Christmas but we had a grand wreath last time at £80 something and it was awful, just awful. We've gone onto Tony Chocoloney - can't bear Cadbury, leaves a film of oil on your roof palate.

BillieWiper · Today 14:42

Nandos is weird. It doesn't taste like any other chicken I've ever eaten. And not necessarily in a good way. Their chips are cack and I think their rice is uncle Ben's microwave pouches? It's also the same price as a decent independent restaurant.

KFC used to be nice but it's absolutely awful now.

Buzz balls. I tried one once, obviously it's not aimed at my age group but it was horrible. Really expensive as well. And I do like sweet drinks sometimes.

I worked in the St Germain part of Paris, no wee smells! It was absolutely lovely, arty, clean, gorgeous buildings. It's the only part of Paris I have seen, apart from driving there from the UK. Go back in a heart beat.

I have never understood dominoes. There's one in our local town that's been there for years, yet i don't know a single person who's ever ordered from there!

Stonehenge- beautiful yes,but you can’t get anywhere near anymore so not worth stopping at.

bournemouth beach- rundown town centre, full of homeless and druggies. if there is a hint of sun that main stretch of beach is jammed wall to wall with bodies.

Oh yes agree on Bournemouth it was rough. Not Blackpool rough of course but I thought it was some kind of genteel nice place.

Well, the comparison was because both have history. The person I was replying to is a lover of history.

Never been to Betty’s because the ones in both York and Ilkley always have queues down the street and it just doesn’t seem worth that for an overpriced scone.

Oxford is pretty overrated. I did my post doc there so lived there for a bit. The tourists drove me absolutely bonkers. The pavements are just so narrow and they stop dead in their tracks with zero warning so you end up running into the back of them. Some of them do stupid shit like standing in the middle of the road for a perfect insta shot… Bikes, so many bikes. Everywhere was just rammed constantly. Lots of annoying tours as well blocking the entire street.

I loved lots of individual elements of it- Cowley was my fave, loved Pitt Rivers, the Ashmolean and the natural history museum. The little cocktail bar/book shop in the covered market. The tourists ruin it, it’s too small to handle them.

Dumbed down. A tragedy. What should be a fantastic and important castle to visit is all dragons and jousts. And expensive. It made be sad.
The money they could make but don’t must be significant.

I went about 4 years ago and although expensive I thought it was worth every penny! Fantastic place, lots to do. The dragons were just a little section for the young children based on a Julia Donaldson book. The jousting was a medieval re-enactment with fabulous horses and actors and was telling the true story of the War of the Roses, it was amazing! We did a little tour and that was really interesting and talked about the proper history too.

I honestly thought the place was fab and I was expecting it to be over hyped, I would willingly go back.

I think if you look at as an independent place it's fun, but if you compare to Florida you will be let down.

The food is awful as well.

Ive heard loads say this but having been to both mutiple times I much prefer Paris, and by a lot.

@KStockHERO I loved Betty's tea rooms. Had a very nice vegan afternoon tea there.
