What popular places are overrated?

Following on from another thread, what places do you consider overrated that are popular?

Hotel Chocolat = over priced, at best average tasting, would much rather Cadbury's at a fraction of the price.

Amorino = our local one gets packed, as in queue's outside the shop packed. Over priced, very average ice cream, that they seem to be able to charge a premium for because you can mix flavors and it's a cue little flower shape.

Dominoes, Pappa Johns, Pizza Hut = unless there is a deal on very expensive for what tastes very processed pizza.

Rye… sorry I couldn’t understand the hype. This is from a lover of historic places too. I’ve only met one other couple who hated Rye and the relief I felt being able to openly admit it 🤣. People were so fierce about how amazing it is

"London" and "basically every restaurant" is a hilarious answer.

London is no more of a hilarious answer than Paris.

Tbf I find opinions like 'Paris is overrated' as an overrated opinion. It's almost like people go to these cities, plan their trip around doing all the major tourist landmarks, then act annoyed and surprised that they're full of long queues and didn't live up to their expectations.

When we took DC to Paris instead of wasting hours queuing to go up the Eiffel tower we spent hours picnicking in the sunshine on a patch of grass overlooking it. We got to relax and marvel at it's beauty whilst enjoy some great food from a local bakery.

You queue for hours, shuffling up hundreds up stairs shoulder to shoulder with strangers, only to stare out at a view of Paris that doesn't contain the Eiffel tower in it and you're surpised it wasn't an amazing experience?

The solution to many of the locations is to go early or go out of season.

Or go to somewhere you actually like

Agree with Centre Parcs. We went once and beyond the pool it was all just crap versions of things you could do better (and more cheaply) elsewhere. And even the pool was only ok

Oh gosh I hate threads like this. So judgey. All restaurants and takeaways, London, Paris. Ridiculous. Bettys is lovely. Bicester is a good day out for a treat and I live in Brighton.

Warwick castle - crazily overpriced

Dumbed down. A tragedy. What should be a fantastic and important castle to visit is all dragons and jousts. And expensive. It made be sad.
The money they could make but don’t must be significant.

It's changed so much since Merlin took over running it.

People tend to hate Landsend.

I don't mind it.

Yes. There are so many better, and cheaper, castles to visit.

But Warwick should be a really amazing place to go. It just was totally underwhelming because of the gulf between the entrance fee and what they have done with it

The best place to see Paris is from the Tour Montparnasse which has no intrinsic value in itself but has the best view.

CaurnieBred · Today 14:24

In Iceland, if you are near Reykjavik, go to here instead of the Blue Lagoon. All the same water - just without the fake landscape and mud and much more affordable. More fun if you have kids too.

Costs £10 for an adult, under 10s are free, 10-17 it is only £2.50.
Only (slight) issue is that you have to shower naked before going in due to the lack of chemicals/chlorine: there are stalls so you yourself can be modest but be prepared for naked locals as it is totally natural for them.

I have twice been to Majorca for the week just before Christmas (coming back a couple of days before) . Was excellent and there were cheap hotel rates both times - climate like late spring in the UK, tourist attractions open but no queues, quiet resorts, burger bar and Brit pub/club type places closed for winter but local interesting restaurants open - and the streets of Palma were decorated beautifully for Christmas.

Some people think it's a really hot take to complain about Paris being overrated. It's as though they haven't even considered that it is a real life capital city, with good bits and bad bits just like anywhere else. I'm guessing those people are expecting to step onto the set of Amélie or something!

Most London restaurants. I meet friends 5-6 times a year and we normally pick quite upscale restaurants, and they’re always a bit shit. I can’t think of one I’d bother going back to.

It's strange how we all differ, because I think it has some of the best restaurants in the world.

I find Paris lovely and very affordable. I live in Scotland and travelling to Paris is as cheap for me to get to as London is unless I were to take my car. Every time I go I discover new places.

If people were to breakaway from their programming that they need to get a pic of themselves up the Eiffel tower, or having a gander at the Mona Lisa for their social media profiles, they would appreciate it to. Or not.

I think if you look at as an independent place it's fun, but if you compare to Florida you will be let down.

The food is awful as well.

I have been to both and love both, they are so different so pointless comparing IMO.

I have to agree on Center Parcs - used to be excellent, but the price now is extortionate. We stopped going when we realised we could get better value on a package to the Balearics, with no food shopping and cooking to do. Such a shame, as we enjoyed it for a winter break.

Stonehenge.
There are much, much better stone circles out there, that you can actually walk into and touch.

Everyone looks at it for free as they drive past anyway (and cause the queues there to be twice as long as they need to be).

St Ives.
Saved our visit till the last day.
I think we spent less than an hour there.

Agree!

Stonehenge. Really small. Shit.
