What popular places are overrated?

Following on from another thread, what places do you consider overrated that are popular?

Hotel Chocolat = over priced, at best average tasting, would much rather Cadbury's at a fraction of the price.

Amorino = our local one gets packed, as in queue's outside the shop packed. Over priced, very average ice cream, that they seem to be able to charge a premium for because you can mix flavors and it's a cue little flower shape.

Dominoes, Pappa Johns, Pizza Hut = unless there is a deal on very expensive for what tastes very processed pizza.

And there is absolutely nothing else around there.

No, not much. Except for the breathtaking cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the architectural marvel of Battistero di San Giovanni and the Composanto Cemetery with Roman sarcophagi and 14th century frescoes. To say nothing of the haunting view of the Arno from Ponte di Mezzo at sunset. What a waste of space.

Oh you did the Eiffel Tower all wrong! I went with my 13year old and we got there at the earliest time, maybe a 10 minute queue and then it wasn't too busy at all, especially if you walked as far up as you can. The views from it are phenomenal, staggering, absolutely worth getting up early for. But to be fair the views of the tower are pretty amazing too.

Paris in general stinks of wee and has a terrible problem with homelessness and (I presume illegal) pushy street vendors, but then it always has stunk of wee. The street vendors have got much worse I think.

I'd say Paris is defintely worth the trip if you don't go expecting some super clean, romantic escape.

Agreed. I think people go expecting this super hyped up over romanticised place and wind up disappointed. I’m half French, my family really detest Paris in the same way lots of Brits hate London I guess. It is grimy and simply dodgy in parts (Montmartre for example is hideous at night).

@KStockHERO I loved Betty's tea rooms. Had a very nice vegan afternoon tea there.

I had a lovely time at the one in Harrogate which I thought was lovely especially wiht the pianist. But the one in York was quite disappointing, over chilled sandwiches (why are food and drinks always so bloody cold these days?!) the room was a bit tired and it seemed a bit more rushed and going through the paces rather than having a special experience.

Another vote for centre parcs.

Ive heard loads say this but having been to both mutiple times I much prefer Paris, and by a lot.

I prefer Paris.

I also prefer the retro charm of Disneyland LA to Florida.

Betty’s is good for mail order hampers etc. I haven’t been to the actual Harrogate original place since the very early 2000s and I imagine it’s just a sort of tourist trap now.

It was already a tourist trap back in the 1970s!

I've only ever visited Paris (about 5 times I think) but lived in London, there are definitely parts of London I avoided and still do - Leicester Square for example is filthy and actually a bit frightening particularly at night, but London as a whole I think is absolutely fabulous and I miss it everyday!

Wowthatwasabigstep · Today 14:56

Salcombe, just so terribly underwhelming and really rather dull.

Buscobel · Today 14:56

Dubrovnik. Noisy and crowded.
Betty’s used to be good, but pricey, now it’s very very pricey

The best of Paris are the bits tourists never really go to unless staying a week or more.

Trocadero, Rue St Honore, Louvre, Galeries Lafayette etc: yuck. Especially in high summer.

But an autumn morning stroll in the Luxembourg Gardens, followed by a spot of shopping at Le Bon Marche and a decent lunch venue with few tourists in attendance is a morning well-spent.

I have to be honest that post covid Paris has felt inexplicably a bit tired. Not sure what it is ...

I love Pisa
It's a proper working town with so much that the tourists don't see because they're too focused on the leaning tower.

St Ives.
Saved our visit till the last day.
I think we spent less than an hour there.

Lol, I agree. Last time we went there the narrow streets were so rammed you were forced to walk in one direction, turning round to walk the other way would’ve caused chaos 😂😂

Colin the Caterpillar cakes. It's just a dry Swiss roll covered in sugary chocolate.

Oh ffs this thread is meant to be about places 😅

That twat Colin is still overrated.

Edited

Charlie the caterpillar cake from Co-op is far better and cheaper. The Frankie the French bulldog cake from B&M is great for less than a fiver.

Only came here to back you on Center Parcs, OP!

Knew it would pop up but we're a massive CP family. LOVE it!

While I'm here, I'm gonna throw in Tony's Chocaloney.

Tastes like cheap advent calendar chocolate to me!

The best place to see Paris is from the Tour Montparnasse which has no intrinsic value in itself but has the best view.

I came on to say this. It's closed at the minute though

Tintagel. It was wonderful before coaches arrived. And before all the Merlin mystery stuff was hyped up.
But now it is so busy. The magic that was real is gone.

Greggs. Particularly their mediocre, luke warm at best sausage rolls. Some of their sandwiches are ok but not worth going out of my way for. I really don’t know what the hype is about their sausage rolls though, I’ve never had a good one.

I’ve never “got” London (and I say this as someone who adored places like New York). It’s busy, dirty, most people I have encountered there are rude. I don’t have much interest in the attractions there other than the ones I’ve already done, so I never want to rush back. I also find anything that is nice suddenly becomes popular and is then impossible to visit without booking ages in advance or queuing for years.

i wish that there were some shows etc that toured more than kept to London as I just really don’t want to go! For example I’d love to see Harry Styles but can’t justify all the travel to go somewhere I don’t like and to fight to leave Wembley etc

(also I’m a 3hr train journey away and it costs so much in rail travel that’s another thing to put me off!)

I have to agree on Center Parcs - used to be excellent, but the price now is extortionate. We stopped going when we realised we could get better value on a package to the Balearics, with no food shopping and cooking to do. Such a shame, as we enjoyed it for a winter break.

Yes, been a couple of times it wasnt what I was expecting. Its very poor quality for how much it costs.
