What popular places are overrated?

Following on from another thread, what places do you consider overrated that are popular?

Hotel Chocolat = over priced, at best average tasting, would much rather Cadbury's at a fraction of the price.

Amorino = our local one gets packed, as in queue's outside the shop packed. Over priced, very average ice cream, that they seem to be able to charge a premium for because you can mix flavors and it's a cue little flower shape.

Dominoes, Pappa Johns, Pizza Hut = unless there is a deal on very expensive for what tastes very processed pizza.

Lyme Regis is my pet hate. Too many tourists, awful parking and not really anything there. Bridport is much nicer with lots of interesting shops and not far from West Bay.
Bristol isn't that bad - I've never been accosted or assaulted by beggars or druggies and the students are not all public school nor do they bray though they may walk in groups along narrow pavements near the university. They're really nice!
Go to Avebury rather than Stonehenge. And there are plenty of lovely Cotswold villages and towns so you don't have to go to Bourton-on-the Water, which really isn't worth the trouble. I should imagine Jeremy Clarkson's farm shop is also overrated but I've never been there (is it even still going?). Don't know what his pub is like either.

100% agree with Avebury, me and DMum went a few years ago, I was fresh out of separating from my now ExH and it was just so soothing and had an almost magical quality to it. Plus you can get right up to the stones and there's so many more of them than Stonehenge.
Wonderful place.

I love Warwick castle! The bird show and jousting event are awesome, and my kids watched a stage show of Zog. A bit Disneyfied but one of my favourite days out ever!

I used to work there for a few summers when I was an actress. I was the plague nurse in the Castle Dungeons 😂
I'd always pick on the manliest, toughest looking bloke to be 'executed' and they'd been shitting themselves by the end, was a great job with a great team.

You know you don't have to actually buy anything and can just look at stuff right?

I know! And I am glad somewhere exists that makes so many people so happy, it’s just not for me.

Scotland is overrated. It's very dirty and full of campervans in the summertime. It rains a lot and there's loads of midges. The towns are quite run down. I wouldn't visit if I didn't stay here.

Absolute nonsense.

The whole of Scotland?

Orkney, Shetland, The Hebrides, The Highlands, Aberdeenshire, Edinburgh, Loch Ness, Loch Lomond, Loch Maree, Gairloch, The Trossachs, Our beautiful castles, stone circles, ancient monuments, Skara Brae, Kirkwall, and so many many more,

All dirty and full of campervans?

I don’t think so.

Yes, I’m Scottish and very proud to live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

CoffeeAndCats3 · 11/06/2026 22:03

Tim Hortons (Canada).
The coffee is watery swill.

Coming on to say Scotland. Utterly depressing from the houses- slabs of dark stone or pebbledash to the weather. And everything is miles from everything else requiring effort that isn’t worth it.

Yep, loads of boarded up shops or loads of Turkish barbers...way to be scottish hey.

Yep true

And the fact it's not really scottish anymore

Stonehenge. Really small. Shit.

Totally agree.

It cost a fortune and the day we went was wet and very windy. I was stood out on the open plane staring at these very underwhelming rocks with frozen extremities and wishing I was anywhere else. Never again.

Scotland isn't Scottish anymore, isn't it?

Please explain.

Bitteralmond · 11/06/2026 22:24

Tend to agree with Bourton on the Water. I had happy memories of it from years ago when I went to the Cotswolds often to see my grandad. I took a friend and my husband a few years ago and was amazed how crowded it was. My husband said 'what 's there to do here?' Not much if you don't want to see captive tropical birds.

I would add Mont St Michel to the list. Again much too crowded (yes we were adding to that). Better viewed from afar I think.

The Isle of Wight is underwhelming, especially that tatty amusement park by The Needles with the overpriced parking. Horrible. The other end of the island is better but I don't think I'd go again.

Terrribletwos · 11/06/2026 22:25

Ah, just to say, as a fact, that a lot of Scottish houses have been bought by English moving up here

Ah, sorry . Yes, just to reply. Yes, lots of people from England do buy in Scotland cos it's so much a better buy after selling in England

Nooooo, not the Isle of Wight! We’ve been there almost annually for the last 10 years and still discovering new places!

Also disagree on CP.

Glastonbury festival.
I've inexplicably been 3 times now and last time I just accepted there just be some conspiracy between everyone else to pretend it's great when it's bloody awful.
All the photos of being happily diving into mud don't show the trudging, up to your tits in mud, traipsing an hour from one stage to the next only to miss the act you wanted to see anyway because the crowds are so massive and move at a glacial pace.
Also I just ended up hating it being filled with 'niche' and 'up and coming' artists no ones heard of but somehow are var var famous don't cha know. My friend and I ended up dancing by a burger van that was playing Heart FM just because it was the only song we'd actually heard of all weekend 🤗
Went into this random tent that was meant to be a cave but was basically a dark gazebo full of stoners all queuing to get through a 'mystery door'. The queue was massive so we thought it must be something worth while. Everyone kept asking 'Ohh what are we queuing for? I don't know but it must be good!' so more and more people joined this massive snake of a queue.
Finally got in to this ridiculous door to walk down a patch of grass with a palm tree on a palette before exiting. That was it.
Never again.
I SAID WHAT I SAID.

Glastonbury festival is my spiritual home. I go every year it’s on and don’t recognise any of what you’ve described!

Stonehenge.
There are much, much better stone circles out there, that you can actually walk into and touch.

Where abouts?

I have lovely memories of IOW as a child. We took out children a few years ago when they were small and had a lovely time. Holidays are what you make them......

All of the UK that is north of the Watford gap, expensive to maintain and what’s the point. Bet that would sort the benefits bill out tbh.

What county are you talking about?
