What popular places are overrated?

Following on from another thread, what places do you consider overrated that are popular?

Hotel Chocolat = over priced, at best average tasting, would much rather Cadbury's at a fraction of the price.

Amorino = our local one gets packed, as in queue's outside the shop packed. Over priced, very average ice cream, that they seem to be able to charge a premium for because you can mix flavors and it's a cue little flower shape.

Dominoes, Pappa Johns, Pizza Hut = unless there is a deal on very expensive for what tastes very processed pizza.

Thank the Lord neither of my children liked anything Disney, and so I haven’t had to go through any of that nonsense. The whole people dressed as animals, enforced jollity, and the endless queues all turn my stomach. I count my blessings 🤣

I hate Paris with a passion. I can’t explain why, really. First time I went, my now DH took me there for my 21st and he got terrible gastroenteritis. Being cooped up in a hotel room the size of a postage stamp with someone with gastro isn’t fun. It also pissed it down every day, so maybe that’s why.

I’ve been there many times since, including working there for a few weeks but always hated it. I have declared to DH that I’m never going there again.

I agree; horribly grubby and unfriendly and pretty much like the rest of France. DH and I have had several bouts of food poisoning there.

The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen.

I grew up in Bournemouth, it used to be a great town. Wonderful place to be a teenager!
But you are right, it is very sad and run down now. Shopping has moved to retail parks on the outskirts. Lots of homeless, because if you are going to sleep rough it's a lot warmer and less damp if you move down south.

Fuck me, I worked with homeless people in Sussex for a few years and it honestly never occurred to me that that is why so many south coast towns have a big homelessness problem.

Thank you for that bit of enlightenment!

The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen.

Totally agree , a very underwhelming statue

Hmm not sure you can fairly compare Rye with Hastings. Camber Sands is tacky.

I like Rye. It's Winchelsea which is just weird and a bit creepy.

Edited

I agree with you about Rye and Winchelsea. Winchelsea has a very weird vibe about it, it's a bit like a life-size model village. I find Rye really quite pleasant and interesting, and it has a couple of nice pubs and good second-hand bookshops.

I know it's almost become super cool to hate on Paris in the same way as Dubai, and whilst there were elements of Paris I enjoyed - I can hand on heart say it's not in my top 20 European cities.

I've always hated Paris which is sad as my DH loves it and has lived there. Not keen on most of northern France really, I find them unfriendly though it improves as you go further south.

sausageth · 11/06/2026 18:58

Well this is definitely a thread for strong opinions. My strong opinion is that I can't understand anyone who doesn't enjoy DisneyWorld Florida. You're either not doing it properly, or there's something missing in your soul. It is quite literally the most magical place on earth.

Looking forward to what responses I get to that 😜.

The only place in France anyone has ever muttered 'You're not from round here' to me and my friends (in French; they obviously assumed we didn't understand) was in the south near Carcassone.
I've always found people in Paris at worst civil, and at best delightful.

Lyme Regis is my pet hate. Too many tourists, awful parking and not really anything there. Bridport is much nicer with lots of interesting shops and not far from West Bay.
Bristol isn't that bad - I've never been accosted or assaulted by beggars or druggies and the students are not all public school nor do they bray though they may walk in groups along narrow pavements near the university. They're really nice!
Go to Avebury rather than Stonehenge. And there are plenty of lovely Cotswold villages and towns so you don't have to go to Bourton-on-the Water, which really isn't worth the trouble. I should imagine Jeremy Clarkson's farm shop is also overrated but I've never been there (is it even still going?). Don't know what his pub is like either.

I really like Bridport, too, but I was somewhat disappointed a few years ago to discover that the great cafe where we used to stop for a cooked breakfast is now a sodding Dominos or something similar.

Tavistock has a similar vibe to Bridport imo.

I got a Colin cake for my birthday last month, I was ‘only’ 82!

Go to Venice in winter, we went for a week in January - freezing, blue skies and sunshine, no queues, no cruise ship passengers, absolutely amazing. Creepy as can be at night, it was like being in Don’t Look Now, loved it!

I agree.

We went a couple of days after Christmas and it was wonderfully quiet, and all the staff in the bars and resaurants were pleased to see you. We didn't have to queue to get in anywhere.

LookInsideMySpottyBag · 11/06/2026 19:14

Bridport gives me a weird eery uneasy feeling and I have no idea why! Really don’t like it there.

Capitalist hell hole. Heat, queues and the only escape is shops which are trying to sell you overpriced Disney tat. Suspect im in the minority but I hated it and resented having spent so much money to go somewhere which seemed designed to make you spend as much more money as possible.

People who think London is overrated have generally been to a couple of overpriced tourist attractions and walked along Oxford Street.

There are all sorts of hidden gems in London. I was gobsmacked when I discovered the Temple, with all it's little courtyards, the tucked away church and the lovely buildings where all the barristers chambers are, especially the long terrace that overlooks the gardens.

When you're in there, it's hard to believe you're only a stone's throw from the Strand.

You know you don't have to actually buy anything and can just look at stuff right?

Let me be very clear - I don't care.

You don't care about people being firebombed from their homes?

jo19 · 11/06/2026 19:30

The trick with Paris is to go up the Arc de Triomphe just before sunset and you get a spectacular view of the Eiffel Tower (and the rest of Paris) and the light show.

lavendarwillow · 11/06/2026 19:45

Lapland UK!

Brighton. Gratingly smug, very very grotty, and a really bad homeless problem

Nando’s. Dry chicken and chips

I love Nando's and all the sauces 😋

Terrribletwos · 11/06/2026 21:20

Scotland is overrated. It's very dirty and full of campervans in the summertime. It rains a lot and there's loads of midges. The towns are quite run down. I wouldn't visit if I didn't stay here.

I dont know if you live in London, but if you do Temple church does a lovely Christmas Day service. Much lovelier than St Paul’s and without the queues!

Glastonbury festival.
I've inexplicably been 3 times now and last time I just accepted there just be some conspiracy between everyone else to pretend it's great when it's bloody awful.
All the photos of being happily diving into mud don't show the trudging, up to your tits in mud, traipsing an hour from one stage to the next only to miss the act you wanted to see anyway because the crowds are so massive and move at a glacial pace.
Also I just ended up hating it being filled with 'niche' and 'up and coming' artists no ones heard of but somehow are var var famous don't cha know. My friend and I ended up dancing by a burger van that was playing Heart FM just because it was the only song we'd actually heard of all weekend 🤗
Went into this random tent that was meant to be a cave but was basically a dark gazebo full of stoners all queuing to get through a 'mystery door'. The queue was massive so we thought it must be something worth while. Everyone kept asking 'Ohh what are we queuing for? I don't know but it must be good!' so more and more people joined this massive snake of a queue.
Finally got in to this ridiculous door to walk down a patch of grass with a palm tree on a palette before exiting. That was it.
Never again.
I SAID WHAT I SAID.
