Dh cutting flowers off tree

Lazydayathome · Today 12:27

Just heard Dh chopping things away in the back garden, assumed was the hedges which do need doing, but it was a beautiful, blossoming tree with pink flowers. It’s the gorgeous one I sit and look at in the evening if I sit outside, I can (well, could) just about see it when sat inside in the dining room, it’s gorgeous and gives off a lovely smell, i’d also put a string of lights around it
Went out to ask what he was doing as branches of flowers tumbling to the ground. He said it’s gardening and has to be done? Is this correct? I don’t know much about gardening tbh, but all I can see is a few flowers left on a spiky sort of tree, when previously it was big and blossoming 😔

You don't tend to cut trees or bushes while they are still in flower. Do you know why he felt it needed doing?

He said it’s called gardening and you need to cut trees back, honestly such a shame, how long will they take to bloom again?

No! That's not gardening. You for a tree back after the flowers are over. IF it needs cutting at all. He's butchering it.

RoseField1 · Today 12:33

No you don't cut back flowering blooms 🙄

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · Today 12:34

It won't bloom again until next year. It's a strange time to prune, usually you wait until after flowering.

Probably not until next year. Can you post a photo of leaves and what's left of the flowers so we can identify it? Where are you?

KateBushAgain · Today 12:37

Is he trying to punish you ?

NeatJoker · Today 12:38

Before he starts on the hedges - it’s still nesting season

Exactly! When is after flowering usually? It’s ruined, honestly so upset, know that’s ridiculous. Bin bags full of beautiful, full pink flowers

Anyone who responds to a genuine question with the intentionally provocative and aggressive phrase "It's called xyz" is not acting in good faith.

It sounds as though whatever he's doing is because he woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

He responded like that because he knows i’m pissed off about it
He wouldn’t have done it intentionally just has no idea what he’s doing and thinks he does!

It certainly reads as though he wanted to ruin something you enjoy.
It is sad , destruction for the sake of it , the poor tree .

Is cutting the tree being abusive?

Lazydayathome · Today 12:45

I mean, there’s some left, but doesn’t look anywhere near as beautiful as it did, can’t believe how sad I feel about it

Hes gaslighting you and being an utter twat. You never do that and that isnt gardening. You never cut all the flowers off like that. I suspect this isnt the only thing be does to stop you enjoying life.

That word gets thrown around so much it loses its meaning

CagedBirdInACage · Today 12:48

It doesn't sound malicious to me. The bloke doesn't have a clue about gardening thought the tree looked a bit too big/was casting too much shade/whatever so chopped it back. It sucks but you can't stick the branches back on now so just make sure he knows that you love the flowers and not to chop it again whilst it is flowering.

Ffs. Really?

outerspacepotato · Today 12:49

You prune flowering trees after they flower. He's a shit gardener.

It sounds like he's a spiteful guy who destroys things you enjoy.

So he's either a dumbass or spiteful. That's not a husband that's a keeper.

Glidinglikeaswan · Today 12:49

Most trees are cut back in winter when they are dormant and have no flowers or leaves. Cutting back when they are actively growing makes them vulnerable to disease. An exception is trees in the cherry family which are cut back in summer to prevent silver leaf disease - but that is done after they have finished their spring flowering. So, no he doesn't know what he is doing but a quick look at any internet gardening site will help him learn. And as a PP said, birds are still actively nesting so best practice is not to cut back any trees or hedges until September unless there are safety reasons.

He’s cut so much though 😢
Then gets angry if I have an opinion about it

Yes, split up a family because he pruned a tree.

Maybe he just didn’t know. I wouldn’t
