Surely public figures must realise that making empty performative gestures will come back to haunt them at some point?

This is so ridiculous. No individual lives for centuries (and obviously especially not a young man like Henry Nowak, RIP, failed by this system) and in fact 'white privilege' is in fact only rich white privilege. There are plenty of white people - a larger number than those who had any kind of privilege - who were in the workhouses when Britain had an empire. Dying of TB and other horrible diseases, Extremely high child mortality. They were not any better off than poor people in other countries and died, in their thousands, in extremely nasty conditions

Do you even know what white privilege is? As t sounds like you don't have the first clue.
It's nothing to do with "how well off" people are, how many diseases we may have or whether have been in a workhouse or not.
It means I can go and walk down the street knowing I won't get either verbally attacked or physically just because of the colour of my skin.
Without even opening my mouth, and minding my own business.
That's pretty privileged in my eyes.

Agree, wealth has nothing to do with it!

A small example, when the England team lost the euros or world cup cant remember which one, the very rich white players were not racially abused online but the very rich black players were, their money didn’t protect them. Kano a rapper (from the uk and rich) got stopped because he was driving a very expensive Mercedes and questioned where he got it from, he was in the bloody advert for said car!

Plenty of black people from left, right and centre opposed BLM. From Thomas Sowell to Cornell West. 81% of black Americans polled in 2020 wanted the same or more policing, per Gallup.

Thinking only self-interested whites opposed BLM’s aims and methods is like thinking all white Brits support the EDL. Easy to do if you are across the pond and badly misinformed.

Supporting the essence of BLM movement does not mean you support every single policy that the leadership proposes

do you support every policy of the party you follow

Quote : "...calling for police defunding (which predictably led to a big rise in murders where it was tried, mostly of black people). "

Where was defunding tried that led to a big increase in murders ?

I can't recall seeing this anywhere.

Nope! The man is utterly shameless and hypocrisy is the lefts DNA. Did you not get the memo that it’s different when they do it because they’re the kind ones.

I think that taking a stand against a Police Force using excessive force, and killing sometime in the process of doing that, is no bad thing.

Acknowledging institutional racism is no bad thing.

Being anti-racist is no bad thing.

Recognising White Privilege, and, Male privilege are no bad things.

The only people who seem to get upset about these things are those who have spent centuries enjoying that privilege, and don’t like other people getting a slice of the pie.

Hear hear

I don't even watch football, but remember that well.
The racial abuse they got was insane. All for missing bloody penalties or some nonsense.

There are plenty of good reasons to get upset about BLM. Massive embezzlement and corruption of funds given by supporters, many of whom no doubt not rich. Encouraging rioting that led to around two dozen deaths. Destruction of neighbourhoods and businesses, mostly poor ones, with $1-2bn in damage. Stoking of racial tensions in an already divided nation. Flouting public health restrictions mid-pandemic. Pushing a police-defunding line that led to a big rise in murders (mostly of blacks) where it was tried.

What ‘slice of the pie’ did BLM bring black people? Most of the harms mentioned above fell on black people. BLM was a curse.

Edited

Lots of things happened in a positive way as a result if BLM. People had conversations they never would have had in staffrooms, and between friends.
Concepts of microaggressions, implicit biased, institutional racism are much more understood. Yes, lots of people were aware of these previously but lots weren't (still aren't).
I work in the world of funding where as a result of BLM, recognition was given to under served populations. Which actually also focused on white working class areas as an under served group. Obviously this was recognised previously, but policies changed and as a result significant funding streams are going to double disadvantaged neighbourhoods. From government level down. This has happened in many places. Cultural institutions recognised that history of black people in the UK is predominantly around negative discourse, TV and film recognised the same with black characters.
BLM as an organisation aren't great and not all of their actions are commendable but the outcomes of some of it has been good.
Unfortunately some of our less favourable politicians have used the inevitable backlash for their own political means. ,

Defunding the police and protesting Floyd’s death was the essence of BLM. It also built a narrative around one false and one unfalsifiable claim: of wide-scale killing of unarmed black men by US police, and that bad outcomes in the black community can mostly be traced back to white supremacy culture that permeates everything. This is conspiracy level thinking on a scale with Great Replacement, etc.

Ive always found it odd how if you are of the left and at least trying to be decent but sometimes failing is ' shameful', whereas if you are of the right and admit to wanting to live your life getting ahead and possibly tsking more than your fair share and not really giving a toss about other people...because you are up front about it that somehow makes you a better person. That's such weird logic.

Presumably they agreed, he didn’t “make” them.

Farage had a “private” meeting with them, supposedly, and he then contravened their wishes.

If he had met them at home, you’d be saying that he’s disrespected them by keeping them hidden, he should be meeting them at Downing Street to show respect etc etc.

There would be protests with or without Nigel Farage. People are angry, again, at attempts to cover up what was really going on. Ya know, like Southports "Welsh choirboy"?

Any woman who is behind a PM who

Believes men can have a cervix
Allies himself with a cause advocating defunding police
Takes the knee for a man who held a shotgun to a pregnant woman's stomach
Appoints an ally to a well known sex offender as US Ambassador

Need not get on their sneery high horses about Farage being the biggest threat to women.

for the majority the movement is about gaining equality and fighting against racism while highlighting inequality and police brutality

you will stil get many people supporting the BLM movement for the very essence they stand for

the defunding the police is a proposal many do and many don’t support which is common among political groups it’s more concerning when all supporters agree with every proposed policy

the defunding is always mentioned and often derails the conversation but why not look at what the BLM movement has raised into the public conversation

If I am reading you correctly I think you’ve just made my original point for me.. Sometimes failing is laughable The virtue signaling left are not nice or kind they are hypocrites.

The assumption that anyone not broadcasting their virtue and goodness must be bad is weird logic.

An example go down any street in a nice street where we live you will see people sweeping outside their houses and neighbours houses. Taking pride in their local area. Go round the corner and they expect the council to be cleaning the streets that they don’t pay tax to be cleaned.

I understand what you are saying but.......I genuinely think this 'hypocritical left politician ' thing is a characterisation partly whipped up by the right wing press. I wasnt impressed by Starmer's 4,000 pound glasses or Angela Rayner's outfits paid for by others, but I dont think they are despicable people. The kind of corruption from the previous Tory govts was far worse imo. The greed, the manipulation thw lying. That doesnt reflect the basic decency of the majority of British people. We're being taken for a ride.

Yeah what's a few freebies compared to a massive appointment scandal around national security. 🙄 there is no whipped up frenzy around the hypocritical left MP. It exists. You can't keep surviving on what about the Tories.
