To think no one in the world is actually a 34C?

I have read a million threads here about people being in the wrong bra size. At 60 years old after 4 pregnancies, 4 years of breastfeeding, weight gain, weight loss and menopause I decided I needed to get fitted. I was wearing at 38E (I have big boobs) came out a 34H 🤯🤯🤯. If someone said to me before that I was a H cup I would have cried but guess what, my size 14 dress fits perfectly. It’s apparently ok to have H boobs 😲. I’m officially mind blown. Go get yourself measured

I always remember when I was young the ideal measurements being 36 24 36! Not sure why you think no one is a 34c? Your title of the post doesn’t make sense?

Yes, because the "36" is the measurement of the fullest part of the bust, not the band size.

I'm a 32FF and was once measured in M&S who decided I was a 36C because that's what they had the most stock of and they don't make an FF, only a G. High street stores have a lot to answer for.

Nope still a full inch for those

Still confused about the double Ds! Can you explain it in kid language... When would I use DD instead of D? And I've only ever seen DD size but maybe the doubles come in other sizes too!

So a DD is one cup size bigger than a D, that’s all it is
stupid as AA is one cup size smaller than an A
some brands also miss out FF so it’s hard with sizing but basically standard sizing is
A AA B C D DD E F FF G GG H HH J JJ K KK L

You're thinking of them like shoe half sizes. It's just the next size up. D is a full bra cup size smaller than DD and 2 sizes smaller than an E.

I think a lot of people stop at a C cup when trying on because D cups are seen as massive so they don’t expect it could be right

santamole · 05/06/2026 12:01

Don't see the need for the doubles now, but thanks for the info. Should be just A-B C and so on until the shelf is filled! or am I missing something!

TheignT · 05/06/2026 12:10

Many years ago I was a teenager training to be a bra and corset fitter. I gave up as I couldn't deal was the predatory older women who liked perving on a teenager, sorry not relevant

I'm a bit suspicious of any decent fitter telling someone they are a 40DD or whatever. The reality is styles will vary, brands will vary so the measuring gives a starting point but it is not set in stone.

One of the reasons was to stop women feeling enormous by being a cup size P or Q apparently.

I wonder if that's why the tiny 50s stars were said to be 36, 24, 36. I always thought it odd that so many of today's women when we are generally much larger, somehow have smaller rib cages.

That was an over-bust clothes measurement. I'm not old enough for the 50s but in the 70s you measured over your bust, your waist and your bottom for your clothes measurement. The ideal was a 10 inch gap so 34 24 34 (a size 12 - the ideal) or 36 26 36 (a size 14 - that was me as a teenager and yes, I thought I needed to lose a bit 🙄).

Bust sizes were something different - it was, as someone has mentioned, the add 4 thing (and rounding up if it was an odd number or something like that).

Yes, I thought so. Can't see the point, I mean is everyone going to drape their hammocks over the back of the kitchen chair every day for all to see! I'm a big girl on top too, but no one knows my cup size, and DH couldn't care less and probably wouldn't understand the letters anyway, being a Victor Meldrew type ha ha.

TheignT · 05/06/2026 12:19

Melarus · 04/06/2026 10:05

All these numbers and letters are just a red herring, really. Does it matter if you're a size X but wear bra size Y?

Women are perfectly capable of choosing and buying the underwear that's most comfortable for them, without being misled by a sizing system that was invented more than 100 years ago and been altered umpteen times since, probably by men and marketers working for manufacturers who are trying to sell more product.

Just try a lot of sizes and buy what feels best! Trust your body.

Brilliant advice. According to measurements on here I wear the wrong size bra but the "correct" size would be a terrible fit.

NegativeFreak · 05/06/2026 12:19

I have no idea what size i am. I binned bras off during covid and haven't looked back.
Guessing that means they're probably quite wee.

My DD is a little tiny thing. We were all surprised when she measured as a 30E. Have you ever tried getting 30E bras?

Large cup sizes haven’t been too hard to find for a 30 band, I’ve found. I’ve just needed to order online or go to Bravissimo.

My DD is a 28 band (well really a 26 but that doesn’t exist), and initially was a 28C. For some reason 28B exists, and 28D, but 28C is amazingly difficult to find!

Genevieva · 05/06/2026 12:25

Bras are no longer true to size.

ny20005 · 05/06/2026 12:27

32 HH - life changing being in a proper fitting bra

Agreed. I was a 30F pre mids (32E now) and it’s quite straight forward purchasing bras except at M&S.

When I was a 28DD in my 20s that was a nightmare.

Shortbreadel · 05/06/2026 12:39

The problem with all this nonsense is it's just a number. Who cares?!

Lifeomars · 05/06/2026 12:46

i've never been measured in a shop, don't know where to go and don't know what it would entail. I measure myself but apparently all the ways of calculating a correct size are wrong, i.e measuring underbust and then adding 4 inches for cup size so I am very confused. A 36c fits me these days, I used to be 34b and could go braless but they have got wide, floopy and saggy as I have aged. A 36c rounds them up and gives them a bit of shape.

BunnyLake · 05/06/2026 12:49

I used to be 34c, such cute bras then. Now they are 34GG not cute hammocks, and I’ve given up wearing them most days unless I have to.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 05/06/2026 12:53

I wore a 34C for years! Got measured when I was 40 and discovered I was a 32F. Fast forward 20 years and I’m a 32H. Apparently menopause can cause a growth spurt. Who knew?

Women with sore backs?

TonTonMacoute · 05/06/2026 13:08

I'm sure some people are a genuine 34C, but I thoroughly recommend getting properly measured.

most people would say oh an F cup or something
