Do I dress like an old lady? I’m 42 and yes I’m aware I need a new bra and I have a fitting for one next week

No, it's just a nice run-of-the-mill Summer dress which looks lovely on you.

I'm not really sure what you think 'old ladies' wear though?

I work with an all female team of elderly volunteers and they all wear very different styles, just as people of all ages do.

this precisely. I am an old lady. I dress how I choose to.

ididabigfatsmelly · 30/05/2026 20:32

DH does like the dress.. also I agree the dress is way too casual for an event,. I got it just for day to day wear

No idea why someone would say you need a new bra. Lovely dress that you can dress up, dress down, wear on holiday.

Who said it was to be sexually attractive to men, that’s not why it should be flattering or do something for you. No one mentioned men, just you.

Ive been shot down before for daring to suggest that the word 'flattering' has nothing to do with being sexually attractive to men

I always make sure what I wear flatters me. Nothing to do with being sexually attractive.

Me too, I’ve said it before, and will say it again, most women dress for themselves first and foremost to feel good, and secondly to impress other women, seldom is it about men,

You bet I had no problem with the phrase dressing like a teenager. I do. It’s a lazy stereotype. Hence you lost your bet.

No nerve has been touched but my point is that ageism is obnoxious. Those of us who are lucky enough get older. Marginalising us in terms of how we dress - with our old lady clothes - is tiresome and lazy and ridiculous.

I hope you’re around for long enough to discover the frustration.

It can only feel like that still to you if you've spent a lifetime feeling it. I don't care what anyone thinks I look like. I'm free of that pressure now. Truly liberated.

This is on the nose. Men don't care about your clothes.

absolutely

If nothing else, I know that boys in my life are the least impressed with what I (or my friends) am wearing 😂, and not just my sons.

DaffodilLill · 30/05/2026 20:40

How old is old?

I can't imagine a 90 year old in it.

I'd call it a sun dress.
It's for baking hot weather / beach type day.

i so wish my boobs were smaller

I think you do need a better bra, but looking at it another way (!) the shirring on the bust does emphasise your bust which is fine if you're happy with that but from a style perspective it makes you look a bit top-heavy.

If you feel your boobs are bigger than you'd like this is not the dress to wear as it does make them very obvious.

There are lots of summer sun dress types around with more a more vest top and thicker shoulder straps.

TooOrangey · 30/05/2026 20:42

I want to ban the word "frumpy". Or dowdy.

😂 Mumsnet is not in the real world.

BatchCookBabe · 30/05/2026 20:44

How do 'old ladies' dress? Confused

What a weird thing for anyone to say.

I have had comments in the past about wearing a cardigan, because apparently only 'old ladies' wear them! I have been wearing one since I was in my 20s.

She is top heavy! (nothing wrong with that, OP!) she can't make everyone wear Meta glasses 😁

I know but if she hates her big boobs there are better styles to make them less obvious if that's her aim.

I have no shits to give about other people’s opinion of how I look. If they don’t like it they can avert their eyes! I say that as someone who now refuses to dye my grey hair, doesn’t care particularly for makeup and can’t be arsed to shave legs or pits.

What I care massively about is lazy stereotypes and dismissing older women as a group. I care similarly about all lazy stereotypes about for eg single parents, people with tattoos, people with strong local accents, heavier people and on and on.

It’s ignorant, lazy and dismissive as well as rude and dull.

Has she said that's her aim?

Summer26 · 30/05/2026 20:49

I would imagine most days you don't wear a thin strapped dress presuming you like in the UK. If you do then absolutely not old lady. If you do, what else do you wear?

DaffodilLill · 30/05/2026 20:49

Ayarreet · 30/05/2026 20:47

More or less. She said she wishes they weren't so big.
I quoted her on that.

dpbarbie9 · 30/05/2026 20:50

I think you look lovely im 40 and dress similar x

SixtySomething · 30/05/2026 20:56

When I see posts like this, I can’t help but wondering whet it’s actually a man.
Many apologies if I am mistaken.🤔

Hnjk67 · 30/05/2026 20:58

Lovely dress, like the soft blue colour

OhThePotential · 30/05/2026 21:00

Its a cheap looking dress and is as dowdy as all get out.

You can find a much better dress than that.

And knock it off with the old lady stuff.

DaffodilLill · 30/05/2026 20:49

Aye, she wished they were smaller. You're right. But tbf it's hard to hide. I've always been an A-B cup but my sister was a G and anything that skimmed just made her look frumpy, which she hated. Going with it was the best thing for her.

Cooshawn · 30/05/2026 21:05

Old lady, no. But I think its quite dowdy and isn't something I'd choose.

But if you're comfortable and like it then why isn't that enough?

babyproblems · 30/05/2026 21:05

No it’s not an old lady dress!! The style is v fashionable. I will be honest and say I don’t think grey is very flattering. Xo
