Do i dress like an old lady?

Do I dress like an old lady? I’m 42 and yes I’m aware I need a new bra and I have a fitting for one next week

OP posts:
ayegazumba · 30/05/2026 21:14

I don’t think it’s anything to do with ‘old lady’ dressing. It’s just not styled to be modern or up to date. Once you improve the bra have a look at what’s going to bring it up to date in terms of the accessories and shoes. Chunky jewellery, the right layer for the evening or cooler days, new sandals etc. I’d recommend following fashionable women of the same age and taking some inspiration. No need
to completely change your wardrobe as so many items like this dress can look up to date with the right styling. Have a go and see what changes you can make

Is there a specific old lady uniform? I'm quite old but I haven't received the memo yet.

Well it’s not mini skirts hoodies, low slung joggers or very high heels. Of course octagenerians can wear these things, but on the whole, they tend not to.

How do you navigate the real world?

Not sure what you meant about dressing like an old lady! My lovely Mum died suddenly aged 83 and my 21 year old daughter wears some of her clothes !
She was so cool and definitely out dressed people decades younger than her .
FWIW The dress you have on is ok for the beach .

WTF 😱

blobofsomething · 30/05/2026 21:37

I mean, you asked for opinions so here's mine- it's not at all flattering on you and it does have a more mature lady vibe to be honest. It's not exactly the most modern or fashionable look. I am NOT saying you must slavishly follow fashion but you asked for opinions, so there you go.

It just looks frumpy and kind of baggy/shapeless

whitefluffydog · 30/05/2026 21:37

I have not seen old ladies wearing dressed like these

Shinyhappyapple · 30/05/2026 21:45

I think there are a few dresses that style around this year. I’ve been looking for one with removable straps after seeing them on a couple of instagram minimal packing features (a midi dress becomes a maxi skirt). The pale blue would suit my colouring, obviously we can’t see OP’s face and hair.
I had one a similar style around 15 years ago, wishing I hadn’t chucked it out.
Im not sure whether I’m an old lady or not.

Forgot pic

The dress doesn't flatter you at all. It emphasises your boobs, makes your legs look too short and why are you standing like that? Plus it's obvious you have big hips.

What do you think an old lady dress is?

BatchCookBabe · 30/05/2026 21:48

Dying to know what @SixtySomething said now. 😆

OuijaBoard · 30/05/2026 21:53

I associate that type of all-over smocking in the bodice and the exaggeratedly gathered dirndl-type waist with an older girl's (not older woman!) or pre-teen style; even without those elements the cut would not be the most flattering on most adult women or anyone with defined hips and a visible bust. I'm guessing that your friend who made the "old lady" comment either meant the style appeared old fashioned to her (reads kind of 1990s/2000s, and she may not be aware of "Y2K" retro trends) or possibly subconsciously associated the colour grey with age/aging, but no one here can know. If the comment is still confusing you, could you ask her to elaborate?

Also, it might be worth considering that (1) you liked this dress enough to buy and wear it and (2) all but one of your friends said it was nice or at least fine on you. Why are you fixating on the one weird negative comment, and accepting its premise when it makes no logical sense? Could there be some internal misogyny and ageism at play here? Only you know for sure.

FallingIsLearning · 30/05/2026 21:58

Was the photographer standing a couple of steps up on the stairs/taller than you?

I think the dress is perfectly fine, but perhaps the angle of photograph from above might emphasise your top half more than seeing you in real life.

FFS

people are allowed not to like the dress, but the mean comments about the OP who has a perfectly fine figure are not needed or necessary.

likelysuspect · 30/05/2026 17:35

Personally I think dresses like that look frumpy

I don't.

UncannyFanny · 30/05/2026 22:02

ididabigfatsmelly · 30/05/2026 17:36

Basically it’s a new dress I got today so sent a pic to 3 or 4 friends, 2 commented needing a bra, everyone liked apart from this one friend who said I dress like an old lady and as a friend she has seen what I usually wear so other dresses etc she’s obv seen me wearing and apparently I just have old lady taste nowadays

Are you sure you’re not just mistaking the word ‘Friend’ for ‘Insensitive arsehole’?

previouslyknownas · 30/05/2026 22:04

It’s looks old and frumpy ( imo) but if you like it then that’s fine

Im 10 years older than you and I wouldn’t wear it

however my friends daughters who are in their mid 30s and have a few kids seem to wear them with those vile “ stay the fuck away from me husband “ Sandles

Endofyear · 30/05/2026 22:07

That's honestly pretty ageist 🙄 what does an 'old lady' dress like? My mum is in her 80s and is still stylish and immaculate. I'm in my 50s and have always been scruffy!

previouslyknownas · 30/05/2026 22:08

To be honest looking at the picture again it gives me “I've given up vibes “ and not bothered
it’s not flattering at all I think it empathizes everthing - but not in a nice way

Agreed. Awful comments! That post by @placemats sounds like something my mother would say! 😬

Must have maybe come across as a personal attack on the OP maybe? Even if you didn't mean for it to be.

Can you tell why? The woman on the image is SUPERBLY BOOBLY gifted and the waist is small......this is a very rare figure and men die for it

Edited

The dress is not flattering at all for the figure.

That's not at all a derogatory comment.
