To not let sister's dog use my garden as a toilet?

YesterdaysQueen · Today 06:29

My sister recently moved to the same town as me but into a flat without a garden. She has a dog who only likes to do his business in a garden, not out on a walk. Since moving she has been letting herself into my garden with her dog so he can do his business in my garden as he won't do it anywhere else according to her. She does pick up after him but it all goes in my wheelie bin which stinks!

I had no problem with her dog using my garden when she would occasionally visit before but now it's become every day, 2 sometimes 3 times a day.

I've asked her to stop as I have young children who, now that the summer is finally here, want to play in the back garden and it just annoys me that all of the lawn area has had dog poo on it and as he gets a dodgy stomach fairly often, some of it is diarrhoea so my sister has been ripping up the grass in those areas when trying to pick it up.

Anyway, she's now very unhappy with me for saying her dog can't use my garden as his toilet any more and has said it's not a big deal and I'm overreacting and being difficult.

AIBU?

She is taking the piss a bit I think! Of course it’s not unreasonable to not want your garden to be her personal dog toilet! If he does big wees and has diarrhoea then that’s not nice at all for your kids and she sounds like a CF for not understanding that. She needs to take him to the park so he gets used to be being out with normal noises. He can’t hold it in forever so will have to go eventually. How close does she live and do you think she moved there on purpose, thinking that she would have access to your garden forever?

She's already started by telling her sister it has to stop. Did you read the bit where OP tells us the sister is now in a strop?

Besides, using your approach she'd obviously assume that as soon as it rains she take her dog back to have a crap 🙄

why the unpleasant face?🙄

Kokonimater · Today 09:05

I’m a dog owner. This is totally unacceptable. There will be residue dog poo in your garden so not ok for your children playing on the grass. And leaving it in your wheelie bin??? Wtf. If I visit someone with my dog and he poos in their garden I double bag it and take it away with me. Stay firm.

BudgetBuster · Today 09:12

If you wanted shit in your garden I'm sure you'd have gotten your own dog.

I'd tell her not again and if she let's herself in, I'd pop a lock on the side gate.

NoCarCantGoFar · Today 09:18

jackstini · Today 06:35

How on earth can her dog differentiate a garden from a park?!

YANBU - dog shit stinks and it’s not something anyone who doesn’t own the dog should have to deal with

She’s a CF

Absolutely this!

Ive been an owner of big dogs all my life and I’d rather die than let anyone have to deal with their poo, anywhere, anytime! She’s pulling a fast one, OP, and totally NOT a good idea for your children to be around this! If the weather is warm is 1000% worse!
Get a bolt or lock on your gate double quick, and if she doesn’t like it, tough!
I’m more angry than I should be about this!😡

Omg seriously what the fuck is wrong with dog owners?

Secretseverywhere · Today 09:28

My dog is the opposite she won’t go in the garden so will literally poo ten feet out the gate. This suits me as I also have who want to play in the garden. I don’t think it’d be hard to retrain the dog. Long walks somewhere grassy, treats and praise when he poos. She can soon recondition him to pooing somewhere else.

Oi. Don’t tar us all with the same brush. I have a big dog. This is weird! Mine snuck out and pooed on my neighbours drive. I was straight over to clean up after him and apologise and immediately blocked his escape route. Most of us know that our dog is our responsibility and meet that responsibility.

(I say most, but I do wonder given some of the threads on here…)

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · Today 09:30

Hit YABU accidentally- sorry! Definitely not unreasonable

Shinyandnew1 · Today 09:30

Why on earth did you allow this after the first time she did it?!

It’s her dog, she needs to be a responsible owner and not just pass the buck onto you! I presume if you wanted a dog, wanted dog poo all over your garden and a wheelie bin sticking of shit, you would have done so.

Get a lock for your gate or a way to stop herself getting into your garden.

hypnovic · Today 09:31

Omg AIBU to not let my sisters dog shit all over my garden? NO

Jackiepumpkinhead · Today 09:32

Huge dog lover here, that is unreasonable and gross! Most dogs like to toilet on grass, I’m sure she can find some that’s not your garden.

It’s just every day there is a new story of someone doing something ridiculous with a dog! It’s exhausting.

Nothing wrong with the vast majority of dog owners… dogs don’t leave broken glass, bbq in bone dry areas causing fires or scatter litter all over the planet. However, dogs absolutely do need taking care of properly, and that includes their behaviour in public and their toilet needs. What happened with OP is beyond disgusting and the people who pick up dog poo then hang it from trees😱 are just vile.
Not all dog owners are like OPs sister, thank goodness, the same as all humans are not littering, vandalising stuff or having bbqs in dry areas.

He does have training issues but actually doesn't bark at all oddly. He is very quiet. But he's a big dog so big poos. I didn't shut it down straight away as I like the dog, he's very sweet and I wanted to help but I didn't anticipate it becoming a 2 or 3 time a day thing forever onwards.

Do people really make other's take their dog poo with them rather than putting it in the wheelie bin? I couldn't go that far.

But I have firmly said no more. I'm sure he can adapt to going while on a walk if he has no other choice.

It’s probably not the best idea to have a big dog, in a flat, if you don’t excercise it properly. 🤷‍♀️

Branleuse · Today 09:40

Is it the fact that it stinks out the wheelie bin?
Could she at least dispose of the poo to a public dogpoo bin?

If she picks up after him and is struggling with training and you guys are close, then I'd be inclined to want to help, but it's worth working out which is the bit that bothers you and maybe you don't have to stop them entirely.
Maybe if she takes the poo elsewhere but also tell her that she needs to work on finding one or two other places where he will toilet too so it's not always just at yours

CelticSilver · Today 09:56

Lock on the gate needed. Grim.

marmitegirl01 · Today 09:57

That is one of the most gross things I’ve ever read. 🤮

Purplecatshopaholic · Today 10:00

Your sis is out of order, you are defo NBU! And I have dogs. Shes also been very silly getting a dog when she’s doesn’t have her own garden, but that’s not your problem.

NoisyMonster678 · Today 10:04

You are right to put your children first, every time.

Do not let her persuade you against this, no matter how long she has an attitude with you over it.

dog poo is very dangerous for eyes
tell her this

Hadenough32 · Today 10:19

Ew I'm really precious about this. I have 2 dogs and they only toilet in a fenced off area in our garden. I wouldn't want my kids playing on the soiled on grass. Yanbu

Portakalkedi · Today 10:23

Put a lock on your gate if possible. Yet another dog owner who can't be arsed to do the most basic of training.... and tell her to leave it at home when she visits you.

PawMaw · Today 10:27

My own dog isn't allowed to use the garden to toilet, he will ask to go out a walk when he needs to pee never mind poo. We moved from a flat to a house when he was was 2 so he did need to be trained not to pee in the garden, only took a couple of days.

Training issues are with the owners not the dogs, she needs training help from a professional. I'm had to get professional help for lead pulling, but it was me she trained not the dog 😂.

There are dog poo bins all around the streets here that are emptied daily, never would I allow a dog poo in my wheelie bin as it's only emptied fortnightly.

Your grass must be burnt?

beadystar · Today 10:58

Her dog, her shit, I’m afraid. She’s being ridiculous. ’DSIS, my garden is not Bonzo’s toilet. Aside from being unpleasant, it’s unsafe for my children and I also don’t appreciate my bin stinking of shit, especially in this heat. Please take him elsewhere to do his business in future. If you ever do this again I will be keeping the gate padlocked.’
