To not let sister's dog use my garden as a toilet?

YesterdaysQueen · Today 06:29

My sister recently moved to the same town as me but into a flat without a garden. She has a dog who only likes to do his business in a garden, not out on a walk. Since moving she has been letting herself into my garden with her dog so he can do his business in my garden as he won't do it anywhere else according to her. She does pick up after him but it all goes in my wheelie bin which stinks!

I had no problem with her dog using my garden when she would occasionally visit before but now it's become every day, 2 sometimes 3 times a day.

I've asked her to stop as I have young children who, now that the summer is finally here, want to play in the back garden and it just annoys me that all of the lawn area has had dog poo on it and as he gets a dodgy stomach fairly often, some of it is diarrhoea so my sister has been ripping up the grass in those areas when trying to pick it up.

Anyway, she's now very unhappy with me for saying her dog can't use my garden as his toilet any more and has said it's not a big deal and I'm overreacting and being difficult.

AIBU?

I don’t put my own ligtle dogs poo in my wheely bin. I definitely wouldn’t want a giant ones with a regular upset stomach in there - it must really stink with the recent heat 😬. It was crazy to move a large dog with this issue in the a flat with no garden. Horrible to think your dc are playing on the remenants of pre and poo especially as there has been no rain to wash it away. YADNBU to say no

HoraceCope · Today 07:12

i think you could start by saying there is a lack of rain to wash it away but she is totally in the wrong

Surely it's madness, and rather cruel, to have a dog when you live in a flat with no garden.

I guess only if said dog will only toilet in a garden?!. I live in a flat with a perfectly happy little dog (granted it’s probably less ideal with a big dog but still not cruel if needs are met) we do actually have a garden but it’s not fenced so I can’t just let her out the door. If she needs the toilet outside of times we are out and about I just take her for a quick walk round the block

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · Today 07:18

Sounds like your sister is one of those people who should have gotten a Goldfish and not a dog.

Does she ever walk it?! And a large dog in a flat? Yes some larger breeds are okay in flats, but I bet this isn't one of them.

Not the point of this thread, but a dog that will only poo in an enclosed space has either not been socialised properly or doesn't get the exercise it needs - most dogs do not want to poo in their own 'yard' (it's usually a last resort as typically they're quite clean). Feeling really sorry for the dog with an owner like her.

moose62 · Today 07:18

I am a dog owner and there is nothing right about this! She is just being lazy and using your garden as an easy way to not have to train her dog.
This is all on her!

The dog is taking a shit but your sister is taking the piss.

ThejoyofNC · Today 08:01

She's taking the piss. Not a chance I'd have my garden, where my kids play, used as a toilet for someone else's bloody dog. She's clearly a terrible dog owner.

Daisydoesnt · Today 08:06

YesterdaysQueen · Today 06:42

I am very fond of the dog, he is lovely but he has a lot of training issues! He's very noise reactive so often gets scared when on walks if he hears an aeroplane or a loud motorbike etc and just wants to go home. He also has no recall and pulls on the lead. So really I think its more a case of it's just easier to let him go in the garden than to train him to go on a walk or to go to a park off the lead but train recall.

Honestly though she is so angry at me and very adamant that IABU and that no one else would have a problem with it. I actually started to doubt myself!

It might be easier for your sister, but deeply unpleasant for you (and I own two dogs). Shes just going to have to get him used to doing it on a walk. It is possible it’s just going to take her some time and energy to get over this “issue”. And by the way, I don’t even let my own dogs poo in the garden, that’s beyond rank. Stick to your guns OP!

Don’t do this! As soon as the weather turns wet again you’ll have the whole argument over again.

She's already started by telling her sister it has to stop. Did you read the bit where OP tells us the sister is now in a strop?

Besides, using your approach she'd obviously assume that as soon as it rains she take her dog back to have a crap 🙄

TokyoSushi · Today 08:21

Totally ridiculous. Absolutely not! (I’m a dog owner)

Walkingnice · Today 08:24

I take our dogs’ poo and put them in the public poo bin down my road because yes they do stink.
Your sister should do the same and take it away for her bin and at least wash your garden down if the dog is having diarrhoea.
And getting a flat without a garden is just silly if you have a big dog. I would lock your garden gate and just say no. I have a sister who strops but she gets over it.

BMW58 · Today 08:25

She's being completely ridiculous. Show her this thread.

OP's sister- you're being a nasty twat. Train your dog to do its toileting elsewhere and NEVER put your dogs poo in another person's bin. Put it in a public dog poo bin or take it home and put it in your own bin

I agree. In my experience many dogs will only poo in their own garden as a last resort. I've never heard of it the other way round.

MyOliveStork · Today 08:29

No I am sorry but that really is being very cheeky. Especially if you have young children who play in the garden. The odd occasion is fine, but otherwise using your garden as her dogs regular toilet is completely unreasonable and really unfair of her to try and make you feel bad for saying no.
(And yes, she should be taking the poops with her to dispose of in a dog waste bin so your bin doesn’t stink)
You really really are not being unreasonable here and I would be very upset if a family member was taking advantage of me in this way.
Stand your ground and say no.

Mydogisagentleman · Today 08:29

I'm in Spain currently. Our flat is on the 3rd floor. I take him down in the lift 5 or 6 times a day and collect his solids.
I also have to carry a bottle of water to squirt on his wee. YANBU

Growingaseed · Today 08:29

I thought this was going to be a post annoyed the dog used your garden as a toilet when they were visiting (which is normal and fine to most people).

To come round and start using your garden as a toilet is bizarre and teaching the dog bad habits. Bizarre behaviour from your sister and I'm not surprised you are annoyed!

ChavsAreReal · Today 08:30

This is very, very odd.

What other odd things does your sister do? This cannot be a one off.

RandomMess · Today 08:33

As a dog owner YANBU!!!

Goodness knows what your DC may pick up from sloppy poo.

sprigatito · Today 08:34

What. The. Fuck. Your sister is a monster 😳 neither she nor her mutt would be anywhere near me or my property for the foreseeable future!

Monty36 · Today 08:35

Why won’t she take the dog for a walk I wonder ? Is the dog not a safe breed or a cross with anything that is unsafe ? Can she not manage the dog properly if it is unruly or a big dog ? She needs to sort out why she is reluctant to walk it.
YANBU OP. Your sister has a dog problem that is hers to sort.

fouleetmites · Today 08:42

YesterdaysQueen · Today 07:00

He does have training issues but actually doesn't bark at all oddly. He is very quiet. But he's a big dog so big poos. I didn't shut it down straight away as I like the dog, he's very sweet and I wanted to help but I didn't anticipate it becoming a 2 or 3 time a day thing forever onwards.

Do people really make other's take their dog poo with them rather than putting it in the wheelie bin? I couldn't go that far.

But I have firmly said no more. I'm sure he can adapt to going while on a walk if he has no other choice.

We have a dog who poos in our garden. We don’t put her poo in our own wheely bin. We take it each day when we walk her and put it in the poo bin. It would stink after two weeks. I can’t even imagine in this heat we’ve had where we live. 😮 so no you are not being unreasonable about any of this, in any way.

SnappyUmberLion · Today 08:47

Specifically taking your dog to shit in someone else's garden several times a day, every day, is absolutely disgusting behaviour. How could your sister ever think this was remotely acceptable?

TomatoSandwiches · Today 08:49

Why has she chosen to get a big dog in a bloody flat? She needs to get some proper training for him and YANBU to ban the dog from your garden.
