Sick of “it’s too hot to eat people”

Anyone else surrounded by this performative nonsense. Both dh and his mum (staying with us as she has building work going on) pull this crap.

Yesterday we had scrambled eggs and toast for lunch. I snacked on sardines to hold me over to dinner. So not much food at all. Dh and MIL probably snacked more than I did. When I asked dh to go bbq the chicken I had marinated for dinner both he and his mum said they couldn’t possibly eat cause of the heat. Like wtf. We still need energy. MIL is not slim. It’s just bizarre and annoying.

Im a size 8 and still require dinner. Ordered food in for myself in the end.

Not enough posters are taking advantage of that missing comma.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/05/2026 12:08

Well I know I’m devouring dips, crisps and chocolate in this heat (the latter for energy) so that throws the you eat less in heat and hot weather theory.

I really hope you are referring to the turkey not the person!

Turkeys are nasty farmed birds.
Would not touch them with a barge pole.

Lunbellerosa · 27/05/2026 12:09

To be fair in the heat some people just want smaller snacks throughout the day...thats okay. If people want to eat their normal meals then thats okay too.

HoppingPavlova · 27/05/2026 12:10

I’m in a hot country and we often don’t do meals at all in really hot weather, you just don’t get hungry.

What happens is you get a tiny bit peckish, but not for anything even close to a meal, so you get people going to the fridge for a bite every hour or so - not enough to put on a plate, I’m talking a spoonful of homemade potato salad or coleslaw in a container. Rinse and repeat.

The problem in our household is with several adults (several adult kids at home), everyone does this at a different time, so in this scenario, the poor fridge door gets a huge workout, it’s a never ending revolving door. Then there is the matter of spoons. Everyone uses a spoon for a single dip of food, then puts in sink, so it doesn’t take long for someone to start yelling that there are no clean spoons left then the fight starts about who is washing them all as no one wants to put the dishwasher on and wait for it for fresh spoons. Shitshow.

nicepotoftea · 27/05/2026 12:10

I think what they mean is 'it's too hot to cook'.

If they had been snacking all day then it's likely that they weren't hungry.

lazyarse123 · 27/05/2026 12:11

We usually have a fry up on Mondays but neither of us wanted the oven on so dh suggested takeaway and all i could think was "god I'll never get my bra on in this heat" we settled for beans on toast. Compromise is key no need to judge.

NimbleLemonEagle · 27/05/2026 12:11

This is me, not performative but I get weird digestive issues when its very hot and eating a lot less offsets that.

Nottopanic · 27/05/2026 12:11

Well, it might be too hot to eat. It’s not performative. Your body shuts off the appetite in hot weather. It’s a normal metabolic response.

How many meals can you make out of one person? If a MN chicken can feed a family of five for a week, an entire person must last a year, at least.

I'm vegetarian so wouldn't know.

Although I've got no skin in the game (at least I hope I haven't 😅 ) I'm wondering how people choose which one? Do they go for their worst enemy so they're out of the picture or would that leave a bitter taste in your mouth? Or do you pick someone at random and hunt them down Hunger Games style, on a bank holiday weekend so you've more time for the roasting afterwards?
Anybody got tips on how to make myself less attractive to the cannibals? 😆

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 27/05/2026 12:12

Like others say you could have barbecued it yourself. You didn't want the oven on but you didn't mind making your DH stand outside using a fire to cook?!
It is too hot to eat and to hot to cook. I did do fish and chips last night but I actually felt ill and couldn't eat anything.
Not a performance, it was just too hot.

Rivertrudge · 27/05/2026 12:12

You were hungry. They weren’t. Assuming they hadn’t just filled themselves up with crap, I don’t see the problem, or why you think it’s performative. Heat affects different people in different ways.

So on a hot day we cook up the OP instead of the MIL.

Yes. Keeping MIL in the fridge and just going in for a bite now and then, as a PP seemed to be suggesting, would be unkind.

Totaldramallama · 27/05/2026 12:12

I agree op. I've never been too hot to eat. Or too cold. I rarely lose my appetite, even when I'm ill. Currently on an AI holiday and it's very hot, I'm eating plenty

Stepmum900 · 27/05/2026 12:13

Yes I agree. People lose their minds when the sun comes out

I'm asssuming you are in Oz? I'm Australian.

Did your family do the full Christmas roast at - Christmas? We did until my teens when finally my mother (I think) said fuck this for a laugh and we moved to cold seafood buffets.

Monteah · 27/05/2026 12:16

I mentioned our sizes to emphasise the fact wanting to eat in hot weather is not gluttony.

What? So your nan was cooking up people not turkeys?

Lifeomars · 27/05/2026 12:17

I barely ate anything yesterday and didn't do anything either, this level of heat makes me feel ill. Had two boiled eggs, a couple of oat cakes, then a piced of quiche at around 10pm. Lots and lots of water. So glad it has cooled down a bit today. Dreading the rest of the summer being like the past few days.

Local people for local people 😋

Girasoli · 27/05/2026 12:17

We're sort of "too hot to eat people" but really we mean it's too hot to cook/want hot food. We are on a caravan holiday at the moment and have mainly been eating nice bread with mozarella/tomatoes/salads etc.

We did make some scrambled eggs for the DC though.

This is the UK. This IS summer. And it's over by Friday.

[Bitter.. love the heat]

Ophy83 · 27/05/2026 12:18

It would have been far hotter for him to stand outside monitoring the hot bbq than for you to have the oven on for 30 mins. Or indeed - if you have one- to pop a couple of drumsticks in the air fryer

Additup · 27/05/2026 11:38

It's not performative nonsense, it's biology.

When it's hot your body suppresses appetite to reduce overheating. Ghrelin which usually stimulates appetite is suppressed which is why lots of people don't want to eat much in hot weather.

That's interesting. I love my food and usually have a healthy appetite, but yesterday I had no appetite at all. Didn't even think about food, which is really not like me! It was oppressively hot here though - my bedroom was 30.5 degrees.
