Anyone else a bit sick of every single weight loss discussion immediately turning into “Have you tried Mounjaro?”

toonoisie · 25/05/2026 09:51

Before anyone says it, no, I don’t qualify for it, and even if I did, I personally wouldn’t take it. I completely accept that these medications have been genuinely life changing and incredibly helpful for a lot of people, and I’m not denying that at all.

But sometimes it feels like the idea of losing weight the old fashioned way, changing habits, eating differently, exercising, being consistent, is almost treated as outdated now. As if nobody wants to even attempt it anymore without medication being suggested within five seconds.

Surely not every conversation about weight loss has to involve injections?

OP posts:

Yet. You don’t just lose weight. You are losing bone density and muscle mass as well. That’s a scary thought

Better to stay fat then?
Losing bone density happened when you age. Losing muscle mass happens when you lose weight, by any means. Lifting weights helps mitigate both those issues. And guess what? You’re allowed to lift weights on Mounjaro! It’s not forbidden! So there’s a way to mitigate those issues while taking WLI!

HobGobblynne · 25/05/2026 19:09

Completely get that and in that specific circumstance, if someone’s said no it shouldn’t be suggested over and over.

but what else they want to hear is the but I’m confused about. Nobody’s going to pop along and say “how about twirling round a maypole three times and holding a peppercorn in your right hand”. There literally is no magic secret to weight loss being gatekept.

What are you confused about? People have different weight loss journeys.

There’s always been discussions of the varied ways in which people lose weight, until WLI became a thing and now it seems some people want to stamp out all discussion that doesn’t include WLI.

The Op wanted to hear stories of how people who hadn’t used WLI had lost weight and overcome emotional eating ; many of us shared our stories and it was going fine until multiple people hijacked the thread to push WLIs.

This has happened on several threads. It needs to stop as it’s literally driving the OP off the thread in some instances and they’re not getting their questions answered.

source emergency tablets

Tablets? I thought this was about injections? Does it come in tablet form?

Apologies. Injections is what I meant to write. I blame the heat ;-)

BiteSizedLife · 25/05/2026 22:46

I can see a world where no one who is dieting the traditional way can havr a bit of a moan or whinge about how hard they are finding the slog of it all, or how they are frustrated with a plateau on the scale, because it will just be "well stop complaining and take injections then."

So the support / right to vent / let off steam will dry up a bit.

Although it can seem like it when you read some threads on here especially ones on AIBU, I’d say overall thankfully we aren’t quite there yet.

I’m currently on two threads in the weight loss boards where we all talk freely about our challenges and progress with losing weight.

I see many comments under fitness influencer social media posts of people giving each other a range of advice and encouragement too.

Well unless it becomes available to people with BMIs under 30 then I can’t see this happening, because there will always be people trying to lose weight who aren’t actually eligible for WLI. Plus the people who can’t afford it, or can’t take it due to medical conditions etc. There are always going to be people who want to lose weight the ‘traditional’ way (do you mean by eating less when you say traditional? Because that’s how you lose weight on WLI too).

Forgiven. It's an effing steamy nightmare in the SE. Some woman on a thread earlier was berating her boyfriend for faking a sore throat earlier so he didn't have to go to the beach or.. . . . .a boot sale! Or summat. I'd have faked a coronary to avoid that if I hadn't been worried about A&E giving me treatment that could kill me. I mean. You can't win in this heat.

I did literally explain what i was confused about. But I’ll try again.

I’m confused as to what would people expect the response to be if they ask for weight loss advice. The answer is only eat less and/or move more. There’s no secret “ways” to lose weight. Slimming world, slim fast, Atkins, cabbage soup diet, weight watchers, Jane plan or mounjaro…whatever it is are all just different ways of consuming less calories. WLIs are no less valid than anything else anyone suggests.

HobGobblynne · 25/05/2026 23:22

IceColdTruth · 25/05/2026 18:49

It’s definitely like a cult.

And the reactions of people when the prices went up, where people were trying to stockpile, source emergency tablets and discussing suppliers was strongly reminiscent of the behaviours of drug addicts.

Well the reaction was in line with anyone else who relied on a medication and was unable to get it. Would you say to a diabetic who lost access to insulin that they were behaving like a drug addict by trying to source it?

HobGobblynne · 25/05/2026 23:25

PluckedFromThinAir · 25/05/2026 18:55

Yes I am sick of this

As if there’s any chance the OP won’t have thought of it already themselves!

not everyone wants to or can take WLIs.

But surely they’ve already thought of non medicated weight loss too. What would be an acceptable response to the question “how can I lose weight”, if we can’t mention things overweight people have likely already thought of 🤷🏻‍♀️

wendywoopywoo222 · 25/05/2026 23:26

Changing habits, eating differently, exercising and being consistent is also necessary to lose weight if you do have the injections.

it is just another thing to help you regulate the above so no surprise it pops up in the same conversation.

NoisyHiker · 25/05/2026 23:31

It is an aid.

I know a woman at work who has always worked bloody hard (she is always in the same gym as me) and knows everything there is to know about nutrition. She lost six stone on mounjaro.

She is so much happier and less anxious now, she said it feels like the hard work can finally pay off!

You wouldn't expect someone with a broken leg to just drag themselves like a worm around on the floor. I mean, they could technically get about, though few would manage their usual day. Why wouldn't you suggest a cast and crutches?

No one said anything about “secret ways”

”..are all just different ways of consuming less calories. .”

You’ve just answered your own question though. The poster is asking about the different ways and methods people used to lose weight.

So it’s very simple what they expect to hear. I still find it odd that you’re confused.
It’s something people have always shared - just check out the weight loss boards on here. Or in normal conversation at work, a girls brunch etc

So person A says “I didn’t calorie count but swam for an hour every day which was easy on my joints and boosted my
mood as well as accelerated my weight loss. Plus I only ate between 12 and 6. Outside of those hours I only had fruit or veg. This took me one year to lose two stone”

Person B might say “I hate running , but I found walking 10K steps great. I cut out sugar, and bread, wrote in my journal every night and tracked my food . I also stretched or did weights anytime I struggled with a craving” .

Person C might say “I find the accountability and recipe sharing in slimming world really helpful for keeping me on track and inspiring me to keep going. I found as long as I weighed weekly and cooked whole foods I managed to lose weight ”

And so on. Some of these methods might appeal to the asker, some won’t be helpful . It’s just a normal exchange of ideas.

WLIs are no less valid than anything else anyone suggests

They are less valid in this context when the person has stated they do not want to take them!

If I ask for weight loss advice and say “hey listen I want to lose a stone but can’t run/jog or “I can’t do slim fast” it would be absurd for people to keep pushing running or slim fast on me. It’s the same thing here.

I suppose I hadn’t considered that people might not be aware that there were different forms of exercise, yes. I am working on the basis that an adult will be able to work out that eating less could be any combination of foods that add up to the correct number of calories for them to lose weight and that any form of exercise could count towards burning those calories. Whether you “count” the calories or not is irrelevant, as long as you’re consuming less of them. When I was 20 stone, swimming for an hour a day wouldn’t have counteracted what I was eating.

I’ve already said that in the context of someone specifically saying they don’t want them, they aren’t a valid suggestion. But that’s not what the OP said, the OP said why do people always suggest them on weight loss threads - and the answer to that is because they are a valid way of losing weight.

My experience is that overweight people have, throughout the course of their lives tried (and failed) to lose weight many times. People know the principles. If I hadn’t had WLI suggested to me, I wouldn’t have tried them and wouldn’t now be 8.5 stone lighter. So yes, I completely understand why people would suggest it. As you say if someone’s said no it’s unreasonable to continually suggest it (if it’s the same person obviously, rather than people who just haven’t read the full thread). But if the post is just about weight loss and how to acheive it, then it’s perfectly fine.

Wickedlittledancer · 26/05/2026 08:53

Weight loss injections have revolutionised the diet industry, for the first time ever we have a very safe medication that enables people to successfully lose weight, when they previously failed. And keep it off.

and that’s why it’s suggested. It would be very odd if it was not. Why would it not be suggested, I’ve no idea why it pisses the op off, but she’s not alone. These drugs cause a lot of resentment, and it appears mainly from women who are not on them. Take from that what you will/

Gosh that's quite the leap you've made there. Is that what you thought when people stockpiled loo roll or pasta in 2020 - wow look at those pasta addicts. Or when world wide events mean fuel price increases and people top up - wow, embarassing to be addicted to petrol. Or do you more rationally think, it's slightly ridiculous of humans that we stockpile but I can see a simple cause and effect at play here - these are people who are worried they might not be able to afford, or even get hold of, something important to them.
I didn't hoard but I did order earlier than usual because why would anyone want to pay £50 more for the same product a few weeks later?!

Why would I resent you for having something I don’t want?

Locutus2000 · 26/05/2026 13:33

My sibling will be eternally grateful to me after complaining about difficulty losing weight, I pointed out they were rich, and had no reason to be overweight in early 2025!

For some reason it hadn't even occurred to them. They started Mounjaro, lost everything they wanted to and feel great. So great they want to share and have offered to pay for me to have it too once I get round to ordering.

Ignoring the single most effective weight loss treatment in conversations about weight loss seems a little asinine.

You said they cause resentment, I’m asking you why you think that is.

I was asking you, why people would be resentful of you for being on WLI.

Or why those commenting that they don’t want them due to the side effects, personal preference or cost vs outcome would specifically be “resentful.”

Of course folk are aware of different forms of exercise. This is getting a wee bit silly now. I spelled it out in detail how the conversation might go and what people may get from it and you still seemingly don’t get it.

It’s not as easy as knowing the principles of more exercise less calories and then executing it because both these things can be difficult to achieve in practice. People have different appetites, different levels of cooking skills, different mobility and strength levels.

So people are clearly interesting in gathering info on a range of things so they can pick what suits them.

It can also be nuanced, some people are better of doing less exercise or no exercise either due to mobility issues or because of if they do HIT for example they may end up ravenous and over eating. Reading about a lot of people who lost weight without exercising was a help to me who had relied a lot on the gym in my 20s but wasn’t able to work out the second time I regained weight over a decade later.

Also different bodies may react to different changes in diet and different intensities of exercises. Fasting works for some, others it’s too hard and it just ends in a binge.

People are just trying to figure it out and do trial and error etc. hence the various discussions!

I had lost weight myself before in my early 20s but found it harder in my mid 30s and through online and irl discussion did glean various tips and tricks that I put together to work for me and I’m now 3 stone down with no help from WLI which is exactly how I wanted it to go.

But the bottom line is very simple and this is my MAIN argument : if someone say they are looking to lose weight and states they do NOT want WLI you should drop it and stop pushing it on them. Either suggest something else or remain silent. This shouldn’t even be up for debate. It’s massively rude and weird for people to keep bringing it up if the Op had said they ain’t interested.

But I have nothing much more to say if you really can’t figure out why a human might want to and ask the input of others humans about what worked for them, and to get various ideas on diet plans and/or exercise plans.

Oh I do have one thing to say - Great we both agree on something then.

My responses have always stated I am talking about threads where someone has explicitly said they don’t want to know about WLI.

That was the kind of thread that @ChunkyMonkey36 the poster you were replying to was referencing as well.

this is bonkers and I’m not going to respond to you further, it’s too odd, even for me.
