AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

I have, they will definitely partake of the enormous cake.

Op. Stop calling stuff enormous, when it’s clearly not.

How big is this cake, given you think 650g of strawberries is enough to feed 9 people?

It feeds 16 people.

But as I have already said I am buying more strawberries.

Look at everything you have bought and see if you can make nine portions of each item - I don’t think you can sorry - I would double the quantities

KrazyKatty · 24/05/2026 17:39

I eat 3/4 punnet of strawberries daily at the moment as my evening snack. So one punnet won’t go very far.

Will the kids eat Pizza? A couple of nice cheese and tomato pizza’s would do for the kids.

Can you post your potato salad recipe please as it sounds yummy?

PullTheBricksDown · 24/05/2026 17:40

Should have added, the key thing though is not to make more work for yourself while you're not well. Make it your husband's job. Pre cooked chicken, bread, pizzas can all be done with little or no prep. You sound like a good cook but this occasion's not the time to feel you have to prove it.

Deadleaves77 · 24/05/2026 17:39

Yes 100g of new potatoes is like 2 new potatoes, it's about 70kcal. Combined with 1/5 of a quiche and a flake of salmon is basically what your guests have each. It's very little food!

Get a couple of pizzas and a French stick. Double the potatoes (at least), 2 more punnets of strawberries and buy another 6 pack of sausage rolls.

And a table spoon of pasta. And a half a sausage roll with some what’s it’s.

and what will clesrlh be a sliver of cake after. Although I’m guessing the op is hoping many won’t eat thay either.

oddest thread of the day.

TotalBaloney · 24/05/2026 17:40

100g of potato each is not a lot of potato!

Op. Stop calling stuff enormous, when it’s clearly not.

I made it. It’s in a nine inch tin and has three layers. It’s about 6 inches high. But I’m sure somebody will come here and tell me that their family of 3 would finish it off.

Pizzas sound a good idea.

the joy of over catering is not having to cook the next day!

🤣🤣 enormous cake reminds me of ‘massive salad’ and your idea of what constitutes enormous or big enough seems to be askew this thread is anything to go by. How big is the cake?

TotalBaloney · 24/05/2026 17:41

Surely your husband can sort all this out though, as you’ve not been well?

Ok, then that’s about the only thing you’ve enough of.

You must be taking the piss now.

A 9 inch cake for 16 people? 😂

How on Earth can anyone answer this question without knowing how big the quiches abd pits etc are?

Standard supermarket quiches are 400g.

Mezzalola · 24/05/2026 17:42

Jesus, us boomers were eating in the lovely curry restaurants in the seventies and eighties, piss off @geminicancerean they probably just don't like your cooking.

Given the fact that everything is bought from M&S you know the maximum size. Have you ever seen M&S sell a supersized quiche or a punnet of strawberries big enough for 9? You dont walk into m&s and see vats of pasta pesto big enough for 9 people, they sell the coleslaw sized pots. It's maybe a large tablespoon each of that max

FoodieFoodFood · 24/05/2026 17:42

I’d grab a few other things, not loads! Maybe chipolata sausages (could make them honey/mustard too), chicken goujons, some nice form of potatoes - or a crushed potato salad!

Actually thays not massive. I just looked at the sizes, it’s wedding portions.

sophiasnail · 24/05/2026 17:42

If a cake says it feeds 16 people, it absolutely does NOT feed 9 people.

This made me laugh and yes I agree.
