AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

People are being a bit mad about the cake. I baked an 8 inch, 2 tier cake for my mum’s birthday recently. All 6 of us had a big slice, 3 of us then had a second (smaller) slice, then we all had a slice the next day. So 15 slices. And that was smaller than the OP’s cake. No one is going short of cake.

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:24

Do your children regularly eat 300g of strawberries each then? I bet they’re regular!

Yes - both mine could eat 300g strawberries easily and they are young/small. I think you’ll need more food if people are expecting a meal. Maybe some meats/cheeses and breads? Bbq bits? If the cake is big enough for everyone I wouldn’t worry too much re dessert but it’s probably a good idea for everyone to be able to have a few berries with the cream.

In my head it’s a square cake 🤣

Maybe @geminicancerean can clarify!

I add boiled eggs with soft yolks. I can stretch it I think. My potato salad is fucking delicious.

Ahem I think the most important thing we need to know is the recipe for this potato salad please.

Boiled eggs in a potato salad I can get on board with 🤤

Namenotimportant85 · 24/05/2026 20:23

I don’t think you’re too far off. At the end of the day you know what your family will and won’t eat and what sort of portions. Everyone’s different. If it was me I’d just add a cooked chicken or drumsticks and some dips and hummus with pitta breads and breadsticks. With a tea like this it’s better to have too much and can always have the leftovers the next day

NRTFT yet but my first response is - have you got store cupboard ingredients to make a big pan of pasta in tomato sauce with plenty of grated cheese on the side. Even better if you’ve got minced beef in the freezer to whip up a bolognese - or some chicken fillets to cut up up, fry and add to the tomato sauce.
I’ll now read the thread and see what other posters suggest 😊

And she has a large pasta salad.

Stillanothernamechange · 24/05/2026 20:25

@geminicancerean please post tomorrow with the piles of leftovers you now have to get through, especially the cake 😁

I made a 10-inch Sacher torte last week for husband's birthday. With 1 tier, once I'd done the filling and glaze it was no more than 2 inches tall. We invited neighbours round to eat it and between 3 adults and 4 children we got through less than 1/3 of the thing with several people having seconds. There's still half of it in the fridge and I've been having it for breakfast.

My children (and I if I'm honest) could also easily get through mountains of strawberries given the chance - that doesn't mean we expect a host to provide those quantities.

Mine is chopped boiled eggs and potatoes, thinly sliced radishes, chopped chives, chopped dill pickles , chopped fresh dill and Hellman's mayo (but not dripping of mayo). Season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle paprika over top. Make sure eggs and potatoes are cold before combining. When my mum used to make this she chopped the potatoes very small so it was almost a mashed potato salad once mixed. It all sounds bizarre, but it is so good.

janeandmarysmum · 24/05/2026 20:28

OP, your meal sounds lovely! Can I come please? The mango and coconut cake sounds delicious. This thread is peak mumsnet. It's 'a chicken feeds 10 people for a fortnight' in reverse.

catmothertes1 · 24/05/2026 20:29

It's not enough and the flaked salmon is a bit random as it does not go with the rest. I would not want a bit of quiche and the salmon in the same plate.

Ottersideofthebridge · 24/05/2026 20:31

It sounds plenty and lovely and I'm not the type of person who can make a chicken last a week.
Mumsnet is mad sometimes.

So don't have them on the same plate, I thought I was fussy, but some posters are really taking the biscuit.

Of course it goes with the rest but no-one has to have both, but plenty of people would.

Or the salmon could be for the people who think they will expire if they don't have a serving of lean protein in every meal.

YourWildAmberSloth · 24/05/2026 20:35

Its basically quiche or sausage rolls with salad. I'd be hungry. Even if you buy more quiches, if someone doesn't like eggs, they won't be eating. Can't DH do something? I would add a whole roast chicken - if DH can't manage this, a lot of shops (Tesco/Asda/Morrisons/some M&S) sell rotisserie ones or easy roast in the bag ones. Or maybe a couple of very large pizzas or a family sized lasagne (I know it will be hot but that doesn't mean that people won't want something more substantial, especially if served with salads.

Tabarnak · 24/05/2026 20:36

My imagination is consumed by this Mango and Coconut cake, it sounds glorious.

(Curry eating Boomer, begotten of even older curry eating silent generation or Children in WW2 when they definitely didn’t have mangoes)

Wow. You have asked for advice and then reacted terribly when people have told you the truth: obviously you are massively underhosting for your guests. Your suggested spread wouldn’t feed 4 people, let alone 9 who have travelled. I hope you have adjusted according to others advice

Snugglemonkey · 24/05/2026 20:40

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:43

Ok, I’ll bake another cake too

I think you have enough cake. And enough potatoes and quiche. I would definitely increase the food, but by adding other things. A tray of chicken thighs, 2 pizzas, another pack of sausage rolls, few trays of charcuterie, some nice cheeses, 2 baguettes, some olives, dips, hummus and another dessert option.

The OP has stated multiple times that she is going to get more food, what else can she do??

Good. Hopefully it works out well

Are you quite ok? This is just a thread about hosting dinner, not the ED olympics

Edited

If they can’t/won’t eat why should anyone else dare enjoy food. I have an awful relationship with food, but can sniff these types out.
