AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

Get another quiche and another six sausage rolls.

The host is feeding Not Fatten. No one is going to slaughter for the supermarket. No one is going to starve. All are going to be fed, not to be fattened, but to be welcomed and enjoy the company. If people are fat and overeat to excess that is not the host's problem: It is that person's and they can go for a curry later.

Are you quite ok? This is just a thread about hosting dinner, not the ED olympics

Josephinemylove · 24/05/2026 19:57

The sensible suggestions are good to listen to. That cake will be hefty. I bake too. Not as a job but I bake and I feel like I’d be serving similar to my fussy in laws so don’t be judged by the options you’ve chosen. Just pad it out like folks have suggested and your potato salad sounds lush

Notabarbie · 24/05/2026 19:58

I'm desperate to see the cake.

Anyahyacinth · 24/05/2026 19:58

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:50

How big should this new cake be?

I mean, I have a 9inch tin but apparently a three tier 9inch cake with frosting and fruit isn’t sufficient for 9 people. I’ll need to buy three more packets of butter because that’s how much went into this one.

If you bake you will know that a 9inch three tier sponge is big.

Bless you.

You are getting a pile on.

A 9 inch celebration cake is standard...the height you mentioned sounded average.. not a flat tray bake I grant you but a 9 inch cake tin isn't big OP - not for 9 people

Not when you are thinking but people dont like the food they can fill up on cake ☀️

Notabarbie · 24/05/2026 19:59

I have waded through 20 pages in the hope of seeing the cake. I feel you have an obligation, OP.

Do your children regularly eat 300g of strawberries each then? I bet they’re regular!

My children would get through that punnet by themselves and there’s only 2 of them. Adults will want strawberries too. Double the strawberries, double the sausage rolls, add crusty bread, crackers, cheese and meats.

Permenatlyworried · 24/05/2026 20:02

I’d probably buy a rotisserie chicken and a few pizzas and garlic breads to chuck in the oven. You should be fine then.

ThatGladTiger · 24/05/2026 20:02

Don’t overthink it, go grab a couple of large pizzas and garlic bread and it will top it up fine!

Because it's well known in catering circles that if you present a selection of food to a group of people, not everyone will take one of everything. I believe the rule of thumb is to provide 2/3s of each item for every person attending. So 6 sausage rolls is spot on for 9 people. If the quiche is cut into thirds, again you have 6 pieces, so 12 pastry items and more than one per person. There's potatoes and 4 different types of salads, so most people will take a spoon of 2 or 3 of these. Plus there's other food now that the OP has added.

Maybe in your circles, in mine it’s standard that there’s enough of everything should everyone want the same things, that’s why I singled out the sausage rolls considering their popularity, plus it’s easily eaten any other day if there’s leftover rolls.

Vartden · 24/05/2026 20:03

If you have people over for lunch they tend to stay I find, and then need feeding again later so finish up the rest of the 6 quiches. :)

JohnTheRevelator · 24/05/2026 20:05

Needs more carbs! e.g.some french bread. And definitely at least one sausage roll per person. I must say I am so surprised that practically everyone has said no it's not enough. Going by the usual Mumsnet mindset towards food I was totally expecting the majority to say that it was far too much! 😂

Lazydomestic · 24/05/2026 20:05

I would add a whole (pre-cooked) chicken, basic salad & bread - easy sandwich alternative

Retiredfromearlyyears · 24/05/2026 20:05

Not nearly enough especially for the kids. At least 2 more packs of sausage rolls. A couple of pizzas and another quiche. A selection of breads ,butter ,cheeses and some sweet pickle or gerkins.
Plenty ice cream for those strawberries and a box of ice lollies for the children.

Littlefish · 24/05/2026 20:06

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:15

Kids won’t eat the quiches and one adult family member doesn’t like quiche, but I do see your point

If the kids won’t eat the quiche, what is the plan for them? Hot smoked salmon? Just the sausage rolls?

It sort of depends how old they are too, if they’re 3 and 4 that’s one thing, if they’re 10-12 they could have pretty big appetites.

Mumandcarer80 · 24/05/2026 20:07

Needs a bit more protein and carbs. Better to have too much than stretching it.

Sorry, just seen your posts about the ages and your dc with ARFID.

Sorry but each person will get a slice of cake that is 1 inch by 9 inches by 6 inches. That’s a big slice.

whilst I agree OP has under catered the savoury the cake with fruit and meringues is more than enough dessery

(but still wouldn’t say the cake is enormous!)

Edited

Sorry but each person will get a slice of cake that is 1 inch by 9 inches by 6 inches.

Assuming it's a round cake (and IIRC the pictures OP posted were) then that's not how much cake you'll get.

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:12

Ok, so maybe I need an extra quiche and maybe some continental meats? Hummus and veg?

Yes I think that’s what is missing some dips.

husbandcallsmepickle · 24/05/2026 20:13

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:48

Ok, DH is going to Tesco tomorrow for:

rotisserie chicken
pork pies
garlic bread
mayo
more spuds
25 punnets of strawberries

I’m really glad I asked and am adjusting spread accordingly. Kindly also remember that I am feeding people that I know very well so I have a clear idea of who will want what.

A chicken is definitely a good idea. In MumsnetWorld that'll feed a family of 4 for a week

NameChangeMay2026 · 24/05/2026 18:43

OP, you keep describing the food as enormous when it's clearly not, at least not for nine. 650g of strawberries is not massive for nine. 950g of potatoes is not massive for nine. Cakes don't come big enough for one to be enormous for nine. You need two cakes for nine people.

If you think all this food is such huge amounts, it makes me wonder if you have some issues around food and are an under-eater. The amounts are so small for nine people but you keep describing it all as enormous, massive etc.

Of course you can have a cake big enough for 9 people (and plenty more). Cakes come in lots of sizes, some may only serve 4 but others can serve 20 plus and then everything in between

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/05/2026 20:14

I'd have burgers and/or hotdogs on a hot day. Easy to add.

WeatherOrNothing · 24/05/2026 19:36

Do you know how easy it is to actually cook a proper meal. These are all picnic type foods and quite embarrassing to host a dinner. We had similar type at our picnic yesterday and it was just 5 people. Super easy to cook a chicken curry, or a pasta or something filling and delicious. I think you could have even saved yourself money too.

Plenty of people prefer several little bits of different foods than one big meal (ie DP and all his family).

In my head it’s a square cake 🤣

Bleachedjeans · 24/05/2026 20:21

NRTFT yet but my first response is - have you got store cupboard ingredients to make a big pan of pasta in tomato sauce with plenty of grated cheese on the side. Even better if you’ve got minced beef in the freezer to whip up a bolognese - or some chicken fillets to cut up up, fry and add to the tomato sauce.
I’ll now read the thread and see what other posters suggest 😊
