AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

OP may have already answered but they do a bigger pot, 400g I think, but even still, not enough food for the amount of people coming over.

kittensinthekitchen · 24/05/2026 19:18

Considering most women on here claim to eat no more at a meal than a single grape and a sniff of lettuce this thread is fucking laughable!

OP, adding in the chicken like you've decided to sounds like a great idea. It doesn't sound like 'barely anything' as some people have acted.... and I am a fat cunt!

Yerroblemom1923 · 24/05/2026 19:00

I don't eat them either, not sure why it's sad. If you ate a whole sausage roll you'd be too full up to then have a slice of quiche, a spoonful of potato salad, salmon, potatoes etc so no one is going to eat a WHOLE sausage roll!

Surely it depends on the size of the sausage roll?

Fedupmumofadultsons · 24/05/2026 19:20

Jesus some folk on here sound right nasty .that would not be enough food for 9 relatives of mine but the op knows her own family .so I always get a bit more incase .op just get a bit more you can always have next day if no one eats .

It would be OP’s luck that she’s doubled the food and everyone going is an MN type competitive under eater.

Ha ha ha ha, relatable 😊

The cake! This is killing me that nobody knows how big this cake is. I am an avid (amateur) baker. Every year for my birthday I make the same cake: a 6-in three-tier Black Forest cake. Every year, I celebrate my birthday with 7 people. Every year, we all eat a little more than half the cake. I have it for breakfast for days afterward!

I do agree with everybody on strawberries. I regularly buy a 400g punnet for each of my kids to eat on their own—but they are strawberry crazy.

Six quiches for 9 people? A quiche for each adult? Really?

Yes, really. I like food to be generous and over catered for a group. You never know who likes what. And can always use the leftovers over the next day or so.
Giving food to friends is giving love to me. Just my point of view.

Dunderheided · 24/05/2026 19:22

I would add in a nice potato salad for fullness, and some more salady things: artichokes, peppers, lots of melon, greens, for colour, flavour and variety.

I very very rarely cater for 9 myself, so hats off to you!

Edit PS: I HRTWT, but have you checked for allergies and what not?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:32

Have checked the packaging and weight and have 950g of potatoes. Do I really need more than a kilo of spuds?

@geminicancerean potato bravas maybe?

Yes one sausage roll can keep me sated for a whole week. OP should just provide nine sausage rolls and nothing else. Everyone will be too full to eat for the rest of the day.

Terriblytwee · 24/05/2026 19:23

Double it.

sprigatito · 24/05/2026 19:24

I think people will be nervous and take less than they want (apart from a couple of men who blithely take half of what’s available). There isn’t enough for everyone to have a sausage roll, for example, so I wouldn’t take a sausage roll (and I dislike shop-bought quiche).

I would always buy plenty and make sure we didn’t waste the leftovers. People want a good tuck-in when they are being catered for, and they don’t want to have to confer on who takes what to make sure everyone gets something to eat.

BeckyBloom · 24/05/2026 19:24

Chicken drumsticks always go down well for more protein

Exactly. Yet apparently a sausage roll or third of a quiche, salmon, pasta salad, potato salad, green salad, Greek salad, crisps, cake and/or strawberries with meringues and cream, and some other stuff I can't remember is a miserable slither of food that will have people running to the chippy on their way home.

This made me laugh. A miserable slither of food gave me quite the chuckle 🤣

Justbreathagain · 24/05/2026 19:27

This thread is so funny, no matter how much food she has it seems to be not enough. It's only 9 people..OP I had 10 in total today and we did not buy the whole of ocado to feed them 😂. You don't need 6 quiches for 9 people!! How much do people eat! The cake is also fine ! I made a cake in a 8 inch tin and it would more than enough for everyone.

Wamid · 24/05/2026 19:28

It's only b... 9 people, not 90, 900 or 9,000! Keep it simple. If they want sausage rolls/pizza/flan/vegetarian they can bring it themselves and share.

I did a buffet for 120: 4 medium turkeys (could have cooked 3 large). Cold meat sliced, dark meat coronation sauce, plus beef joint. All cooked weeks before and frozen in slices). Salad, potato salad, bread sticks. Various puddings brought by guests. I did large trifles, catering tins of fruit salad, cheese and biscuits. No cream.

HangingOver · 24/05/2026 19:28

If they ate a full adult serving of pasta eg 75-100g they'd be too full to eat anything else!

Um...what??

TheDenimPoet · 24/05/2026 19:28

When I'm doing buffets I have pretty much the same you, but I also add things like mini sausages, mini scotch eggs, lots of crisps and other nibbles like breadstick, cheesy bites, etc. Anything that doesn't get eaten gets to be lunch until it's finished, so nothing gets wasted.

Hot quiche ?
Yabu

You know that quiche is cooked?

Do you eat yours with raw eggs/pastry?

Imaginingdragonsagain · 24/05/2026 19:29

Think people are right and you need more food you’ve taken that on board. Just wanted to say the cake sounds amazing, any chance you could share the recipe?!!

No wonder there's an obesity problem in this country. A portion of pasta is roughly 75g. The OP isn't just serving pasta there will be other food as well.

BINGO! That's "massive salad" "I'd be stuffed eating that" and "no wonder there's an obesity problem in this country" 🎉

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/05/2026 19:32

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:12

Ok, so maybe I need an extra quiche and maybe some continental meats? Hummus and veg?

M&S quiches aren’t very big - I’d get at least 2 more, plus some baguettes and butter/cheese - and some cooked sausages usually go down well.
